  1. That was directly told by someone at dragonsteel, wasn't it? I don't really like that answer, because just by asuming that a floor has to be around 3m heigh, it means that the tower is 366'6666 times larger than that according to navanis measurements of the miniature urithiru (which she states is made "on scale"). So even with less floors it has to be around 3m*366'666 I think we just should wait for any clarification that comes directly stated in next books or by a WoB, because this was also something said before RoW. Maybe Brandon changed his mind on it, or maybe he just didn't calculate for the on-scale urithiru in the book. However, even if it is slightly less than 1Km, it still is a-ma-zing to think about. Just imagine being on one of the heigher floors and looking outside of your window. It is also good to remember Urithiru is itself placed up on a mountain. So I presume it to be on an insanely heigh altitude, which would make ot very hard to even breathe if it weren't for the sibling. I'd love to see a real life on scale miniature Urithiru tho, THAT would be amazing.
  2. So, i looked up if someone had already started a thread on this topic and I didn't find anything. Maybe it's something that was already known, but it just blew my mind when I read it: When Navani encounters the "miniature" Urithiru (I think you call it mockup in english) she says the following: "It was 5 meters and a half in size (...) on that scale, floors weren't higher than 1 centimeter and a half". With a simple calculation, you get to the conclusion that Urithiru has around 360 floors. Since we infer that those floors look more or less normal (not too small) we could say they will be more or less 3 meters high (as per usual in our buildings) maybe higher due to alethi being very tall and not complaining about the height. This would imply that the tower is, at a bare minimum, 1.1 Km heigh! (For people from the US, i looked it up and that would be 0.68 miles). However, usually buildings have some floors that are notoriously heigher, so, making a comparison with our real world buildings, for example, the shanghai tower (580m 130 floors), being that Urithiru has more or less 3 times as many floors, we could come to the conclusion of it being over 1.6 Km! (this is 0.99 miles) I don't know, Just thinking about it makes my brain hurt, it is actually like living inside of a moderately heigh mountain.
  3. I think this is kind of vague. You could advocate for both sides with this premise. On one hand, we see that T did directly go against the will of Odium and his plans (which I would argue that is breaking the "contract", as in T is part of the diagram, and by going directly against Odium's plans he is doing the opposite of serving him). On the other hand, you may argue that the contract was already fulfilled, since Odium told Taravangian that he only needed that last betrayal and would just let him rot in prison (clearly stating that no help was needed anymore). So, did the "contract" end on Tarvangian's part? Did Taravangian break the "contract"? Anyway, If we speak about the possibility of Taravangian still being able to represent both parts in this "contract", I would say he can't. When you become a Shard, you are no longer the same being, in this way I think of the way Harmony put this in words: "You say that the power itself must be treated as separate in our minds from the Vessel who controls it." "I find this difficult to do on an intrinsic level, as although I am neither Ruin nor Preservation, they make up me." So, when ascending, you no longer are Sazed, or Sazed + ruin + preservation. You are also not Sazed + Harmony. You, entirely, are Harmony. Or that is what i understand from this letter. A different vessel could lead to a being that is not Harmony. Argent When Sazed picked up the Shards of Preservation and Ruin, did he actively choose to be known as Harmony (instead of, for example, Balance, or Equilibrium, or Stability), or is there some Cosmeric law that says Preservation + Ruin = Harmony? Brandon Sanderson He chose the name, but in part because it FELT right to him. Argent Is this similar to how a Shard's "personality" overwrites the Shardholder's over time? Brandon Sanderson Similar, yes. /r/books AMA 2015 (June 17, 2015) Following this WoB we see exactly that last bit, so, someone with a different perspective would have been able to pick up the shards giving them a different Intent. So, what I'm trying to say is, when Taravangian picks up Odium, he is no longer Taravangian, nor is he Odium+Taravangian. He becomes Odium.
  4. Well, for the record, I don't necessarily agree on book 5 being 10 days. Who knows, Brandon could give this a twist, being the 10 days resolved in part 1 and having the other 4 parts to cope with whatever the outcome of that is. In that sense, Taravangian could win that champion duel and still be defeated at the end of book 5 (maybe Ishar Connection stuff so Dalinar doesn't belong to Odium anymore). I definetly think Taravangian is going to live after book 5, however, his death would be climatic (in the way that he could be the first part BBEG and if he first defeats Dalinar and is defeated after that, it could still give him some more protagonism in the book).
  5. Or just unnaned mothers that are still alive... yeah. I do totally agree tho, Brandon's writing is evolving on a very rapid pace (for example if you compare his Reckoners series with Skyward you notice how much better he got in that specific genre in no time!). So maybe we are thinking in the wrong direction here, but I still think Adolin is a very good character to kill in SA5. Even if it hurts my heart
  6. Well, brandon sure does like killing of wives/mothers to give people tragic backstories (if only he hadn't named hessina!). This gave me an idea for a new character arc for our good old Kal: His mother dies, his father gets crippling depression and he has to both make advances in mental health research and educate his brother by himself. ¿Wouldn't that be awesome?
  7. I think all three of those have been really set up to be end game bbeg. But from those 3 I would be more on the side of Kelsier being that main adversary. Just purely from the fact that he has been studying the very laws of the cosmere and investiture for the last 300+ years, plus that we saw that he knows there is a way to force enugh connection to a Shard to be able to become it's vessel. Also, from the reading of the continuation of Sixth of the Dusk, we see Scadrians being very pushy trying to get a hold of other forms of investiture. However, I think Brandon will not set up one main bbeg, but multiple adversaries for the final part of the Cosmere. So, the way I see it, we could be potentially having multiple enemies (as in, for example, Odium's forces on one side, Autonomy's forces on the other, and Kelsier's forces also confronting the "heroes"). Another option is Kelsier taking a shard to do so (for example, Autonomy, which I think would suit him very well...).
  8. Okay, I went to Chaos's post on the spoiler policy, and have also reported it. I'll hide it now, so I hope it doesn't spoil anyone. Thanks!
  9. Okay, I just noticed there is still a spoiler and spoiler-free section. How do I delete this? oh god I'm so stupid
  10. Okay, so, with RoW published and asuming most of us have already read it well and are discussing about it, I think it's time to create a little game that can go on to the day book 5 is published, as in, a character dead pool. The rules are as follows: 1.- Submit up to 5 characters you think are going to die in book 5 (mainly to don't make this too long, while mantaining a clean vorin number) 2.- Make an argument on why you think they are going to die (because it will be a good plot point, or because of the way you picture the character arc...) 3.- Make a guess on how the death will be. So, the final result should look like this (this is just an example) 1.- Kaladin: Why: His arc is going to be completed in book 5, achieving the 5ft ideal and not having a real progress from that point, making him a perfect character to kill of in the 5ft book How: Fighting Dalinar, who has become a puppet-fused controled by Odium 2.- Lirin: Why: In a similar way as Kaladin, him accepting the vision of his son is a way of closing most of his character arc. His death is just the last step Kaladin needs to be able to swear the fifth ideal. How: Actually fighting against enemies who, trying a new strategy (very plausible with the change of vessel for Odium), directly attack the weakened soldiers in Lirin's clinic. He is finally killed by Moash, who, after killing Lirin, does the bridge 4 salute to Kaladin. 3.- Gavinor Why: To finally break Dalinar, making him able to join Odium's forces, something really bad has to happen. Gavinor's death is THE turning point for this. How: Following the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he dies in front of people who try to protect him Your character pools can be completely serious and actually trying to predict things that you think are likely to happen, or more of a joke. It's up to you! I hope you like the idea and I'm excited to see your responses.
  11. Oh, I forgot to mention, we also do translate Keteks, but in RoW it wasn't entirely symmetric
  12. Hi there! i've read every single Cosmere book in spanish (with the exception of the dawnshard novella since i didnt know when it would be published in spanish and I really wanted to read it before RoW, and white sand) Windspren is actually translated as vientospren, so that one you guessed correctly! For most of the other things they leave them in as in the English edition, with some little tweaks here and there, as in: Parshmen is Parshmenio in Spanish. However, for the radiant orders we have translations, which are slightly different, while mantaining the meaning of it (in spanish we can't form new words from the conjunction of two other words) Those would be: Truthwatcher -> Vigilante de la verdad Windrunner -> Corredor/a del viento Skybreaker -> Rompedor/a del cielo Bondsmith -> Forjador/a de vínculos Elsecaller -> Nominador/a de lo otro Stoneward -> Custodio/a de piedra Lightweaver -> Tejedor/a de luz Dustbringer -> Portador/a del polvo Edgedancer -> Danzante del filo Willshaper -> Escultor/a de la voluntad When I tipe the /a it is because you need to ad or substract that letter depending on the gender of the person (great language difference tbh) Also voidbringer would be Portador/a del Vacío This happens the same way with the shard's Intentions, and while Honor remains the same way, (so does Odium, which is actually originally latin, so we spanish speakers can read it normally) other intentions don't. As is: Mercy -> Piedad, Preservation -> Conservación, Endowment -> Dotación and so on. Also, in spanish this can make things slightly more complicated to translate. I always remember that one scene with Kaladin, when he jumps in the arena to save Adolin from his unfair duel, when he says "Honor is dead". In english this means both things at the same time: The concept of honor is no longer supported by the people, and the actual Shard Honor is dead. In spanish you can't say that, you need to put a "the" before honor to make the sentence have sense. But in doing that, you no longer have the second interlretation! So, in spanish you could say: "El honor ha muerto" or "Honor ha muerto". I hope i've helped you with this, and if you want to know more funny translation things I'm happy to help
  13. So, about the Intent-Command-visualization discussion: I always try to see those things in a philosophical way, in this sense going with a Hegelian/Marxian point of viow. So I see this as a dialectic correlation between both concepts. What I mean is, Intent is passive, Command is active (I think we can all agree on this, just by conceptualizing that one can be "Commanding" but one can not be actively "Intending" as cosmere concepts, something on the lines of what Ian said about "Intent is something you have, Command is something you give"), so they are dialectically opposed. This means they are both opposed and the same thing. In this sense, you cannot just have something be "entirely Intent", or "entirely Command". Visualization is part of both. You visualize actively for the Command to take form, but at the same time that visualization comes from your Intent, filtering through it. Think about my way to describe Intent it as in how Kant describes our human preconceptions (as in time and space), trhough which we understand the reality. Without this filters we cannot understand, but with them we understand in a certain way which is (from Kant's perspective) always biased. In the same way, the visualization would be active, and thus, part of the Command, but it would "appear" through the Intent. Someone's Intent is the filter that let's this visualization exists, but it only exists in relation with the Command.
  14. Okay, so I see a few problems with the things you are stating 1.- The fact that immortality is easyer to obtain in Nalthis and Sel is for what I think not true. Sure, in Scadrial the knowledge of how to obtain it (as in, hemalurgy) is lost, and due to the loss of power through the different generations it's more difficult to acces from birth (as in being a full feruchemist + full mistborn), but that doesn't make it inherently more difficult per how the magic system works. 2.- The differences between how you create devices usable by other people. When we meet people from the south in scadrial we see that it is kind of easy to make such devices given to have the knowledge to do so. The same can apply to the magic system on Sel, wherein, if you don't know the Aons, you can't make any device capable of such things. On Roshar it also seems to be constantly improving in making it easyer to manufacture such devices (though i see the clear difference with Nalthis's system) 3.- The distinction in how skill and experience is different between both sets of wolrds. Here I just don't see the difference. For as we see Susebron accomplishing great things with just access to an inmens source of Investiture but no real experience in it (since of how much breath he has, his commands just don't matter). And in the other 2 worlds I also see how much knowledge, experience and skill matter in your power. Vin was an inmensely powerfull mistborn, I'd say that she would be more powerfull than Elend even if he had more "raw" or "base" power to start. That is because of her experience and knowledge on how to use her powers (as in the way she found out to "fly" on terrain that had no metal nearby). Same goes for Roshar's system in my opinion. A well experienced Lightweaver will accomplish much more than a newbie. 4.- Power obtained from contact with pure Investiture from a single Shard. I think this is the same on any given planet with one or more shards Invested in it (or, as Sel, where Shards were Invested and now only their raw Investiture remains). For example, the Returned become that way because access to raw Investiture from Endowment. (by her Endowing this on them). In Sel we just cannot see such things because those Shards are shattered and we still don't know if there are any residual pure or raw sources of Investiture that they could have possibly left on the planet. Still could be a possibility tho. However I think the concept of a "Unity" dawnshard that encompasses Honor, Devotion and Dominion is very interesting! Since we "*know*" the existance of the dawnshard of Change, in this respect I consider that probably Cultivation and Ruin would take part of that one.
  15. I don't think it would be within Odium's plans to do so. However, and seeing the WoBs quoted by @Fezzik it raises me a question: What would happen with Nightblood if he was exposed to a free unlimited source of investiture? Let's say, the cognitive realm of Sel. I guess, same as with "he could not plausibly destroy a shard", he would'nt be able to "suck up" all that investiture, but it might weaken it strongly, maybe causing another catastrophe on the planet. Or, since in this case the investiture is kind of floating around (more like an intense storme if anything), could it just extinguish it? What would happen if a shard would get vanished? Not like shattered, but if all it's investiture would disappear. What would that do to the cosmere?
  16. Geat! I sure will. Thanks
  17. I really enjoyed Rysn's development in this book. I know she doesn't get a really big arc, but still I think it was pretty cool. The thing I appreciated the most was Brandon writing ways in which characters are really important and accomplish great things whithout having to be super powerfull fighters. Usually in fantasy we see the spotlight taken by great warrior heroes, fighters, rogues... In this book we got to see Rysn saving the day by being really intelligent and demonstrating a great level of empathy and understanding. Neither a big fight for climax, nor great explosions of power which would make the problems go away... Narratively, a great way to keep the sleepless as big of a thread as they are (if you have them against you), and making a damn good resolution on the end! I would like to hear your opinions on this same topic, since it was what I most enjoyed from the novella (well, also getting to know more about dawnshards and the shattering, of course, but there will be enough discussions on these matters anyway)
  18. Oh. Then I would need some kind of explanation on this topic. Is there a thread or something that explains it? Could you tell me otherwise?
  19. I don't know if I agree on that. I mean, they said they didn't use soulcasters. I know it's not quite the same, but that was their excuse to give those away. They didn't hesitate in giving the shardplate away either. If they were to use it I doubt they would have let go on it so easily.
  20. It stands for Tabletop role-playing game. Such as D&D for example. Maybe we are talking about the same in another way? Idk
  21. Ooh, like TTRPG? I also love to play them, though my friends and I have hard times to schedule usually...
  22. Hi, there! I'm also new to the forum (since a few days ago). ¿Have you read, or are you reading, Dawnshard? I'm currently half-way through, probably I'm going to finish it tomorrow. Also, here goes a weird question: ¿Who would you hire as your cook? You can choose any character from the cosmere, BUT they can only cook stuff from their planet. (So, rock can only cook weird crabs and stuff)
  23. Oh, wow! Well, if you ever wanna practice, just tell me ^^ Hi! Sure, I'll ask for help if I need to, thank you very much Also, RPs? What's that about?
  24. Wow, thanks! I do not usually read through the WoBs, so the ones I've read I mostly forget about... I thoguht I had an original idea, and I don't know if it is something I once read and just asumed (forgetting i had read it in the first place) or if I just got to the same conclusion. Also, on the topic of that other thread: Yesterday I read the general rules of the forum, and there is one specific rule on not commenting on very old posts (I guess it is to have continuous new content and avoid flooding the forums with old topics) so I'm still kinda cautios on that matter.
  25. Oh no no, I mean, I understand it's a very hard language to learn! It's just with spanish natives that i tell them usually, but I try to be polite on it (although it might come over as very nitpicky and not wellmanered to do so...)
