  1. Caden tried to speak, but his voice was caught in his throat. He tried to clear it before continuing, "what's all this? Why are you the one apologizing?"
  2. Caden held his arms up in confusion before hesitantly placing them around her shoulders, "what has gotten into you?"
  3. "What? Did I say something that caused this?"
  4. "What are you following me," Caden demanded as he stopped in his tracks.
  5. "That's not what I-" Caden growled in frustration as he got more flustered, "you're insufferable."
  6. "That's what you'd like me to think, isn't it." With a quick glance down the hallway, he tried to escape. "I'd never admit any of that!"
  7. "I-" The odd sensation of his face growing hot returned when the words she said felt true to Caden, he stomped his foot. "You- you took advantage of me!" He turned and dashed towards the door, knowing how fake that lie sounded.
  8. "I did no-" Caden cleared his throat, and stood up despite the countless sores and aches from sleeping on the floor that plagued his body. "I would never," he asserted.
  9. Caden forced himself to take several breaths, the Raveness's appearance being the least of his worries. "Were you sleeping with me?"
  10. Caden leaped back from her, hand grabbing his heart. "What the blazes! Were we- Did you- What?"
  11. Caden paused at the unexpected sound, his eyes shooting open to see what was there.
  12. With a shift of his shoulder, Caden groaned softly as consciousness slowly seeped into his mind. He wanted to bat away thoughts of getting up for just a moment, as his position was filled with warmth that he welcomed with open arms. It was only then that he stirred, the warmth causing his mind to feel as if something was off. He tried to lift himself up.
  13. Caden shifted slightly, but held his position while he drifted off into sleep.
  14. Caden's body stopped shivering, and his breathing started to even out. He could hardly whisper as the world turned dark around him, but the unexpected warmth caused him to sigh in relief just a little bit.
  15. "Forgive me," was the only thing Caden could force out of his mouth, his body leaning into Riva as exhaustion overtook him. He held her in his arms, but mostly laid on top of her, too weak and drained to move. "I don't know what to do," he said with his eyes clenching shut.
  16. "I . . . I don't know," Caden tightened his grip, "I want to, but I shouldn't . . . Right?"
  17. Caden watched tearfully for a moment, hardly noticing the syringe before leaning forward to try and embrace her. He took another breath that caused his very core to tremble, and tears now silent rolled down his cheek. "Don't leave," he softly begged, "I can't go on without you . . ."
  18. Caden accepted the pain, laying where Riva slapped him. He spoke between trembling gasps, "if I love her, then I'll only bring more pain." He grimaced as he gabbed his gut, "why can't I command my own heart! I know what's best, so why do I still feel for her? Help me," he looked towards Riva with pleading eyes, but he seemed to be seeing beyond her, "I have nowhere else to go."
  19. "Riva . . ." Caden admitted softly, taking in a deep, shaky breath. "I can't go through it again, I just can't."
  20. "I can't-" The curled up form that was the general shuddered, his voice lowering to a whisper. "I couldn't go on she was stolen from me, I can't go through that again. I can't let myself love her . . ."
  21. Caden broke down into tears again, "please. Oh Stars above, I loved her."
  22. The general shuddered upon contact, curling up tighter and clenching his eyes closed harder. "Forgive me, please forgive," he whispered over and over again while his body trembled, being cold to the touch.
  23. Caden knelt on the floor of the Raveness's potion brewing chamber, having already cursed that infernal woman for stealing his private chamber. He kept his eyes clenched shut in fear of what he would see if he opened them again. The sharp memory of all of the Raveness's things pointing and accusing him causing his chest to tremble with every breath. He had tried to smash them already, but that only created more fingers, more knowing of his sins in the darkness that surrounded him. The general wrapped his arms around himself, and he grit his teeth as he tried to focus on the here and now, trying to ignore the warmth and love that he felt as he recalled the small things, her smile, or her light and fair laughter as he made a small mistake. He tried to push on, but the more he dwelt on the smaller things, the harder the memories pushed him. Soon he could hear her voice, ringing through the small bedroom as she sang to a soft lullaby, or the taste of her warm and calming tea. His breathing grew quicker while he could feel his gut tying up into all sorts of knots as he knew where this would lead. In an instant, the memory of the alarm that was raised rang in his ears, the adrenaline that surged through his veins as he flew down the hallways that seemed to go on without end as he desperately searched for her room, only to find the door hanging ajar. Without bothering to check for danger, Caden had charged in, only to find her on the floor, surrounded in a pool of her own blood. Caden trembled as he remembered her eyes, once so beautiful and full of love and light, staring blankly at the ceiling. He could feel himself being too shocked to move, before grabbing her in a desperate attempt to feel her life, her warmth again, only to feel nothing. He wrapped his arms around her trying to pull her close to protect her, but he could only feel pressure building in his chest as he didn't feel anything coming from her. He squeezed her as he heard a scream echo through the room. He didn't know who was screaming until he felt his throat become raw as he tried to pull her close to him as possible. He clenched his fists with all of his might as he refused to let Acalia go, to let her die alone, even though she was already gone. He screamed and begged with all of his might and voice to any divine power that watched over them to bring her back somehow, even if the cost was his own life. Better that she live, than he. When his voice finally gave out, and his eyes seemed to be dry, he realized that no one would answer, he felt as if he could only lay down and join her. He wanted to sob as he felt the world around him grow darker, and colder, but Caden only shivered not knowing where to turn. He trembled, curled up on the cold, stone floor. The whole world around him was as dark and cold as it had been since it had stolen her away because of his failure to protect her. He sobbed into his own arms, unable to stop even if he could want to.
  24. Caden swiped at Riva, missing as she back away. He shouted wordlessly in anger while the carriage rolled away, pulling himself away from the window as a single tear blazed it's way down his cheek. He shouted at the coachman, "faster!"
  25. He stepped forward raising a hand to strike her, "silence!"
