  1. "Wha' exactly 'appened? I was ou' on duty."
  2. "Stab me if I knew," Fischer said with a shrug, "me an' the guys couldn' fink up an answer for wha' the general did ta deserve tha'."
  3. "Yeah," Fischer rubbed his arm, "I's even heard tha' whole marriage fing wassin' the king's idea."
  4. "Oh, he treats me fine, I guess." He nodded, "been 'earin' all sor's of fings about his wife. Although I did sugges' tha' he give her flowers." He shook his head slightly, shocked over how quickly he fell back into the accent.
  5. Fischer smiled too, "how could I forge'? Let's ge' movin', ven."
  6. "I don' care, where you wanna eat'll be fine wif me."
  7. Fischer followed close behind, taking one step at a time in a more rigid manner than he would have liked. "I can't 'ell ya how good it is ta see, it's been so long."
  8. Fischer chuckled nervously, "uh, yeah. How're ya doin', Nico?"
  9. After cleaning off from the rigorous training exercise he had just been put through, Fischer put on his cleanest uniform, one that had just been pressed a few days before. He still felt butterflies in his stomach whenever he thought about it too much, but he was filled with energy to the point that he practically blazed past Nowak on his way out, forgetting to wish him well. He didn't run or sprint as he might have done years ago, instead falling into a quick and steady march, relying on the consistent foot falls to ground his mind. He arrived at the meeting spot earlier than anticipated, as he had been erroneously worried he might have forgotten the way altogether. He glanced around, nearly bouncing on his toes trying to find Nico. It shouldn't have been all that difficult, given how tall the man was, but he still had a tendency to go about unseen for some unfathomable reason.
  10. Caden gripped her hand, unsure what to say, the uneasy feeling still existing in his gut.
  11. "But the most you've ever done to me was the drug in the tea." He sighed, "I can't ask you to forgive me."
  12. "I'm a monster, and that," he gestured towards her bruise, "is my fault."
  13. "I-" Caden looked away. His breathing becoming shallow.
  14. "I lost her," Caden admitted, "I don't like remembering that."
  15. Caden looked away, unable to stomach seeing the bruise on Riva's face. "I didn't want you to get close to me, I didn't want to love you."
  16. Caden's breath caught in his throat, and his gut twisted suddenly. "Yes?"
  17. Caden entered the dining room, his wife holding his arm as he gestured towards the table.
  18. "You men have been doing excellent," the captain said as he patrolled up and down the front of the formation of ten of the Praetorium Guard, in two rows of five. "But due to the inactivity of the palace guard, you won't be getting a break. This castle would be a hopeless mess without you men, and that's why I need you back out there." He nodded towards the five men in front, "you'll be taking the forth floor. There have been no explicit reports yet, but all manner of drunkards are wandering those halls." He stopped at the end of the line, addressing Fischer who stood there. "Take care of them." Fischer saluted the captain, "yes sir!" He then looked towards the men in the back row, "I know it's clerk work, but you're going to be digging through some reports for a few bribery cases. You'll get more details when you arrive at the offices." The ten men saluted and marched off to deal with their duties as the Captain went off to find the Stars' accursed captain of the palace guard. This infernal night seemed as if it would never end.
  19. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, taking her in for what felt like the first time. He placed his face on her shoulder, "I don't want to lose you. I keep thinking that it would be better if I did, but . . ." He shuddered slightly, but nowhere near as bad as the night before. "Don't go . . ."
  20. "Without my . . . warmth?" Caden held his arms open, "I- I needed your warmth last night," he admitted.
  21. Caden chuckled softly, "that's reason enough, apparently."
  22. He nodded, but his gut wasn't settled. "How can you still want me, even after all . . . all that I did."
