  1. "And what do you think his plan is here, hmm?"
  2. "Oh, pshaw. Loyalty, sentiment. Same thing, one just sounds manlier. You have enough manliness if you ask me. Perhaps Ivian wasn't completely crazy to give you a woman. Just crazy for giving you this one in particular." She smirked.
  3. "Ooh, sentiment. I wasn't sure you had any of that in you, General."
  4. "Hmm..." Riva sat back and thought. "Why are you so loyal to Ivian? They call you the King's Dog for a reason."
  5. Riva pushed his arm playfully, laughing. "Well, your flirting could use some work, but I'll take it for now. I appreciate that my greatness is only fact."
  6. Riva put a hand to her breast. "Why, Caden, was that an actual compliment?"
  7. Riva chuckled loudly. "Tell me about it. That's my entire job."
  8. "Mmm hmm." Riva yawned, doing her best to stretch in the cramped space. "You don't talk to people much, do you?"
  9. "I'm a particularly skilled botanist. I know more than a thing or two about anatomy. And I'm not against knitting once in a while."
  10. "It's conversation," Riva hissed. "And anyway, it's your turn to ask a question."
  11. "Mmm. I grew up alone. I assume you did too?"
  12. "Good. I would be very displeased if you did." Riva tapped her fingers on her knee. "Do you have any family, Caden?"
  13. "No," said Riva flatly. "And that won't change if you intend to 'hop on it'' so to speak. I'm too old for that, in case you couldn't tell."
  14. "Thank ya, thank ya." He swung his feet front and back, the picture of joviality. "So, what's-a everyone up to today?"
  15. "Um..." Riva picked at her nails. "I believe it's your turn to ask a question."
  16. "That seems rather lonely," Riva muttered. "My quarters are about four times the size of this carriage. I share it with no one."
  17. She nodded. "I see. Ah... Is it large? Where you live?"
  18. Oh. Riva bit her lip and scooted back over to her original seating place. For a moment there, she'd really... Well. She'd thought he was flirting with her. I really am an oddity. More obsessed with death than the leader of the king's armies. "Uh... I believe it's my turn for a question. Uh, what's your estate like anyway? Do you live alone?"
  19. Riva nodded. "I figured you would. But it's the art of it." She scooted even closer. "Perhaps... perhaps you'd like to watch me at a later date? It really is quite a performance."
  20. Riva chuckled. "Oh, no. That's the executioner's job. I am the terror and darkness before the sweet release. They beg me for death and I deny it to them." She scooted closer. "Imagine that. Being so utterly powerless all you can possibly want is an ending, your only god the woman above you causing you exquisite pain. And at the end when you break, you realize that you love her, because she took the awful pain away."
  21. "That's an interesting question," Riva said with a mischievous smirk. "To be honest, I've lost count. It's rather hard to keep people alive when you're trying to push the limits of human capacity. But I've gotten much, much better as the years have gone on. I can suspend life in a state of sustained agony better than anyone else on earth."
  22. She rolled her eyes since he was obviously lying. Her probably had a hobby he was embarrassed about, like gardening. "Slaughtering is something I can work with," she said with a shrug. "I like that too." Riva offered a smile, her blue eyes practically glowing in the dim carriage light and against her dark hair. "Your turn to ask me a question."
  23. "Not far from Mendahar's borders. I've never bothered to go back to where I was raised. Not even sure I could find my way there anymore." She nodded, staring him down. "Good, good. My turn, I suppose. What is something you enjoy doing? Besides the obvious."
  24. "How about you try asking me a question this time?" Riva was rather tense, fists clenched, knuckles white. "People are more than their titles. You are more than the general and so am I more than the Raveness."
