  1. Acalia had not been Caden’s wife: “My little brother Caden,” proved that much. Riva was presently rather embarrassed to have thought anything otherwise. She had moved to the irresistibly soft bed again, knees up, reading the journal intently. Her read was a certified page turner. Truly quite fascinating. So far, she was only about halfway through the thick tome; though she'd stayed up late last night, her old eyes in the poor nighttime lighting and general fatigue had slowed her reading speed significantly. She expected to finish the journal tonight or early tomorrow. Apparently, Papa Praetorium had been quite the psychopath; Acalia frequently skated around mentions of her receiving severe beatings for stepping out of line. The most common offense? Giving love and help to her good little brother whom she loved so very much. Little Caden meanwhile was punished by being worked near to death with intensive military drills. Well, punished was perhaps the wrong word; Papa P felt he was pushing his son to greatness. His wife had passed away giving birth to Caden, so Acalia had stepped in as the matriarch of the home, baking pies for her beloved younger brother, reading fairytales to him, and playing with him when she could. But always over her shoulder was the threat of their father. In short, the two siblings had an awful home life. If she was being honest with herself, the journal did make Riva feel bad for Caden; she knew from experience what kind of PTSD an abusive home could offer. Yet at the same time, she knew what her husband was; the type of man who scooted away from her in the carriage, would throw her out the door, and refuse to buy her a dress or accommodate her in any way. Acalia had done her best, yes. But it had not been nearly enough.
  2. The room was perfect. Riva flagged down a member of castle staff. "You there! Does this room have a lock on it?" "Uh... no m'am." "Well, I suggest you install one, unless you want a place on my table. I intend to use this room as my office space and I don't want any interruptions, understand?" The woman curtsied. "Yes, Lady Praetorium." She scoffed at being associated with Caden's surname. She'd much rather be called Lady Raven, but, figuring she might as well get used to it, she held her tongue. Office chosen, Riva felt free to go back to her room again. By the time she got there, Daku was long gone. The bed was made, he'd left her a love letter (his affection for her was so obvious it was slightly sickening) and her clothes all neatly put away beside Caden's things in the closet. She tsked; those clothes would have to go. After literally throwing them out of the room, she grabbed the journal and sat down in a chair to try and finish it.
  3. Riva had Daku dress her; she was both too tired to put clothes on and too excited about putting her potions away to go back to bed. Once she had a dress on - a nice matte black with poofy sleeves - she ordered her servant to put her dresses away in the closet while she found a decent office space in which to conjure.
  4. "Good." Nico blushed and offered his arm for her to take.
  5. "Now we goes on as friends, I guessin'." Nico sighed, squaring his shoulders. "Hopefully the girls is alright."
  6. "But o' course." He bowed and his cape flopped over his head. When he drew it aside, he was grinning.
  7. Nico smiled shyly. "You shouldn't have to save for days. It was the gentlemanly thing to do... But I promise I won't pay for no more."
  8. "Yes, what is it?" ------------ Daku waltzed into the room pulling a wheeled trunk behind him. "Good morning, Lady Raven!" "It was a good morning, until you woke me! Why am I not asleep, Daku?" "Well, I brought your things, mi'lady. Clothes, potions. Your essentials, like you instructed." "Oh, yes, that's right. I don't suppose you have furniture with which to decorate the room as well?" "Uh.... no, miss. Although I'm more than happy to go out and buy-" "I want flowers, Daku. Flowers and some art pieces, along with a bedspread and curtains. Can you do that for me?" Daku bowed low. "But of course, my Raveness."
  9. "I believe you 'bout that much, Wendy. An' it's okay; everyone thinks of me like you did."
  10. "You know what I'd a-bet happened? I think the Raven wanted someone small to experiment on an' the king told her no."
  11. "Yeah... I just hope she stays far away from her. I've never been to the Raveness, but I seen her quite often, since I'm with the king. Somethin' ain't right with that creature."
  12. Nico nodded. "That poor little girl. The Raven's a witch, she is, I hate to think of Bella in that monster's clutches. She seemed to come out okay though. You... don't happen to know why the little miss was sent down there, do ya?"
  13. Nico sniffed and pondered a moment. "Now... if you doesn't mind me askin', miss.... Why the Mal would you be accusin' me of bein' a pedophile one second, then huggin' me tryin' to help the next?"
  14. "Now, how would you do that, miss? I... I doesn't deserve any help anyway."
  15. "Well, I... I doesn't like placing no blame, miss. Yeah, they'll force themselves on me, b-but I should be brave enough tuh say no, so if it's anyone's fault it's mine. I-I should be better."
  16. "Oh, I never start it. I just cannae say no. An' by now I've become known for it. But I hates it. I just can't... can't say no."
  17. "Not when they found out what I am. What I have to do... to try an' make people like me."
  18. "I should just die," Nico muttered. "Then I'dn't be a bother to no one never."
  19. Nico held tight to the back of her shirt. "Thank you... Thank you, miss."
  20. Nicolae hugged her. He didn't care that she'd been accusing him of being a pedophile just moments ago. He just needed someone to cling to. "You're only the second person who's ever thought that, miss."
  21. Nicolae glared at her. "It. Doesn't. MATTER! Nothing matters! No matter how good I am. I. Am. Nothin'! No good, worth-nothin', Nicolae!"
  22. "They'll grow up one day and then they'll see. Everyone always does. Everyone...." Even Eleanor, eventually.
