    "I knows you can, sir, I-I just..." He looked down at his trembling hands and clasped them behind his back, his self-hatred burning through him. "I ain't a good servant to you, I'm not. Stars know you should get rid of me, promise to me father or no"

    Nicolae stood up to his full height and wiped his eyes, sniveling miserably. "I'm sorry," he mumbled. "You... you know 'bout the cups last night?"

    Nicolae woke with a massive headache and a nasty case of self-loathing. He groaned, rolling over in bed. This was why he didn’t drink all that often. Sure, it made the world fall away for a moment, but mistakes and responsibility were still there in the morning. And of course, his drunkenness last night would probably get him fired or sent to Lady Raven sooner or later. To be fair, he was deserving of either one, but that didn’t mean he was looking forward to it. Stars above, facing the king today was going to be painful. Facing Eleanor even more so, but… well, he intended to avoid her for as long as was feasible. He had the displeasure of remembering every moment of their interactions the night previous and the memories made his stomach turn. He’d hugged her. Stars above, he’d hugged the king’s bride-to-be. If Ivian found out… He was known to sleep around; Ivian would undoubtedly suspect the worst and that would be the end of it, head on the chopping block. With a gulp, Nicolae bit his lip and sat up in bed, his brown locks a tangled mess. He was trembling all over and soon enough he felt tears rise up. I die today, were his grim first thoughts. They played in his head while he got dressed and while he tidied up his room. As he walked down the halls to go do his morning chores, he wondered if this would be the last time he’d ever see the corridors he’d become so familiar with. Even while the cook berated him over breakfast - smacking him on the head with her rolling pin as he left the kitchens - he couldn’t help but think it, trying desperately not to cry into his oatmeal. I die today. It wasn’t long after he arrived at the king’s chambers - his head pounding from being hung over, holding back sobs, and stress in general - that it all came crashing down. The serving boy set down Ivian’s breakfast tray with shaking hands. “Mornin’, sir,” he muttered, voice breaking with terror. Only a few seconds later did it all burst. He gasped and fell to his knees, bawling. "Oh, Majesty, I's sorry. I's screwed up before, I has, but I... I don't wanna die, sir, I doesn't. I know I make mistakes, I do, but I'm loyal, I swears I am.”

    "Yup. They're gonna make you work even if you're sick or hurt, so... Be careful."

    "The higher-ups could usually care less what we do down here. If you have a grudge against someone, nasty pranks are pretty fair game. Just don't get too violent, I guess. That girl I mentioned, the one sent to the Raveness? She almost killed another girl. The castle staff is in rather short supply; working conditions aren't great, so very few voluntarily sign up. Severely injuring someone else here will get you, well, severely injured." Allivia chuckled darkly.

    "Ah, yes. We trade a lot of stuff here. We don't get paid much, so we pay each other in favors. The girls in the corner are newbies. I guarantee people offered to give up their blankets so they could cash in later. Winter is coming soon and when the weather gets colder, well... those blankets will be in high demand."

    "Eh, it's a throw away job," Allivia said. "We're really just glorified maids, to be perfectly honest. If someone important comes to visit, one of us gets assigned to them and at balls we're always rushing around getting stuff from the kitchens. Tonight was weird with that lockdown though." She shrugged. "You can definitely get away with slacking off, just be careful about getting caught too many times."

    "That's fair. And, well, probably good for the Raven to have her dungeons full. I've heard that if she doesn't have enough people down there, she'll pull civilians to experiment on. She's not allowed to torture castle staff though, unless the king lets her, so that's a relief."

    "Ah, brutal. That kinda thing could get your father sent to the Raveness." Allivia grimaced. "I hope he's okay. I knew a girl a while back that was sent to the dungeons. She wasn't executed, but she was messed up when she came back. Killed herself after a while."

    "So. What did you do before this?"

    "Ah, there are pleasures to be found." She yawned, stretching. "They're little, but better to find 'em than wither away all depressed, right?"

    "Ah, well. You know, I'm actually not sure which is worse; being here because of debt or because you had no other choice. I'm the latter. Been here for almost a decade now."

    "Wendy. Nice, nice. Well, I can't say you'll enjoy it, but make the best of it, I guess. How long are you gonna be with us?"

    Wendy was met by the too-charming smile of a golden-haired woman who looked to be in her early-mid twenties. "I'm Allivia," she said. "Nice to meet you. What got you landed in waitressing?"

    "Hey," someone said. "You're new here?"

    "I'm sorry, my dear. I know the cookies aren't much of a consolation... but it's something at least. And I hope I can do a lot more than just that. I do not intend to send you back to the dungeons - they're no place for a sweet little girl like you - and I promise that you won't see any more of General Praetorium. He's a nasty fellow. Of course, he would say the same about me..." She snickered, smiling amiably.

    Riva mused for a moment. "You must consider them your family, don't you, miss 'bella? I bet it hurt when Biana just left you here. With me."

    "Ah..." Riva considered. "And... how much of Robin's crew is made up of children like you?"

    "Well, that doesn't sound very nice of her. You're better off here, if you ask me." She folded her arms, leaning back in her chair. A warm fire flickered in the hearth, popping softly. "How does a nice little girl like you get mixed up in all this anyway? Highway bandits and traitors, I mean."

    Riva nodded. "And she's not the one who threw the pie at me, is she?"

    “Mm, no one does. I guarantee everyone born the same year I was is long dead.” She smiled. “Now, dear.... Who was your friend out there? The woman holding you?”

    She nodded mischievously. “Indeed. And the legend of the Raveness is even older. My mother was the Raveness before me.”
