  1. Fun discussion, guys! I enjoyed the book, I had fun reading it, and I really liked Spensa's character arc.

    Spoiler

"He got ate by Spensa" is the best observation on the book that anyone will ever have. Chet will be missed by me. Probably. Who knows what is going in book 4!

The back story on the Delvers and tying in with Defending Elysium was really interesting, AI learning emotion is one of the themes that I liked the most in the book.

  2. Super late to the game on this one! But...my dream arc for back five Kaladin:

    Spoiler

Kaladin is a therapist and training new radiant windrunners. He is becoming one of those wise mentor figures who imparts compassionate wisdom on the next generation.

I wouldn't mind him stepping fully into a supporting role, though it may be a nice time for a small romantic subplot for him, though that doesn't have to be the case.

I cannot wait to see what Kaladin and Syl think of Nightblood!

Also, Lirin drawing the shash on his forehead is like the equivalent of the dad making it to their kid's school play/baseball game at the end of a nineties movie.

I am loving catching up on all the character Deep dives! They must take an insane amount of prep, thanks guys!

  3. I haven't read it yet, but it's nice to hear your thoughts!

While I don't like spoilers, I like to have some idea of the type of story I'm reading so I can give it a fair shake. I liked Starsight more on subsequent reads as I understood what the goal of the story is, but I do still really want more of Skyward Flight, so hopefully the novellas scratch that itch for me! I'm also hoping to have more characters come together in book four.

  4. I suspect the anger issue is not intentional. I don't think Brandon is trying to claim that anger isn't justified for these characters, but I do think the writing doesn't completely follow through on their struggles. Maybe he feels he mentioned why they are angry and that it has a real cause and that covered it.

Maybe Brandon's faith is a part of that, forgiveness is kind of a big deal in Christianity in general. There is an element of "don't let your anger control your life" in lots of his books, I think that is a perfectly reasonable thing to say, but I agree the issue is that the source of their justified anger isn't addressed as fully as maybe it should be. I am still hoping for Stormlight to follow this through more fully.

Differentiating between healthy ways to use anger vs dangerous ones, resolving social issues, and different kinds of anger (interpersonal anger, social justice rage, and self loathing are all really different) would be awesome. I'm looking forward to these evolving in new in interesting ways in future books...I hope...

  5. I do want to point out that Dalinar did in fact ask the Nightwatcher if forgiveness was possible for what he'd done. He wanted the pain gone, but he did actually ask for forgiveness.

  6. I am so interested in what the couple dynamics for human/singer couples might be. Since Singer forms can affect their behavior and attitude a bit I want to see how the human half responds. I want to see how emotional communication works when one can hear rhythms and the other can't. I'd love to see some scenes of Rlainarin domestic life in the back half!

  7. Spoiler

So much of the new science in RoW is really interesting to me as it uses music and sound.

I'm not some super expert on the physics of sound, but based on my basic knowledge from studying music, I am thinking about all kinds of weird things.

Are the "pure tones of Roshar" literally a specific resonant frequency? I mean, objects and spaces can have a specific tone that makes the space resonate differently than other notes...how do overtones effect the "pure tone?" Does vibrato or other variations of tone make it more difficult to sing those tones?

Maybe the Singer's can feel the rhythms similarly to how we feel the vibrations of our own voices or a really powerful subwoofer. It's a "forced resonance" that humans don't really experience?

Maybe the tones associated with anti-lights cause pain because the tones literally cross the pain threshold, or they are so dissonantly at odds with the tones of the investiture they hold that the resulting vibration is uncomfortable...

    Spoilers + random musical musings...

  8. I am sure I'm not the only person who was clearly reading this book waaaay too late into the night to notice one of the big reveals mentioned

    Spoiler

I mean, after reading that Thaidakar was clearly an off world cognitive shadow who wanted to figure out how to world hop and THEN having him referred to as Lord of Scars, my very sleepy, slow brain said "must be someone we already know I wONdEr WhO iT cOuLD Be???" And I seriously just passed it by and thought nothing more of it, assuming it was not something I'd figure out any time soon.

Yeah, I really have to blame the late night brain fog because anything else would be inexcusable.

  9. A great, thoughtful discussion! You gave me a lot to think about on these tropes and some of my biases. Shallan's nameless mom is another interesting look at this trope. Unnamed mother who is killed, and her sons certainly think it was their father who done it and would remember her as better than she was. In contrast, Lin and Shallan know the truth about her and how she really died. It's a different version of the trope, but still another example of Cosmere dead mom.

  10. If you want to do some more game/debate podcasts as we wait for RoW to come out, I would love to hear a  Versus match up similar to Ship it or Rip it, but it's all about people facing off in a fight. It might be hard to debate with some really OP characters, but I bet you could come up with some interesting arguments to circumvent that (master manipulators need not be physically strong, etc).

  11. *Puts on aluminum foil hat*

I think the Reshi isles used to be a mountain range near the coast Kurth near the middle of the nation. It got smashed kind of like the Shattered Plains by some surge binding mumbo jumbo and the land sunk, leaving only the peaks of the mountains as islands.

  12. I don't often theorize, but here we go! Y'all got me thinking. What if Cultivation has been cultivating her daughter the Nightwatcher to have a magical signature similar to her own? That way Odium wouldn't notice the difference between a typical boon/curse vs. real Cultivation intervention. She allows the Nightwatcher to do her thing specifically so that she can step in and plant the seeds she needs to bring down Odium. I also theorize that Dalinar, Taravangian, and Lift (and others as well) are all part of her plan to bring down Odium, but in such a way that Odium will overlook them until the crucial moment. That's pretty much how OB played out, he didn't pay attention to or notice Dalinar's personal growth until it was too late.
