  1. That would've simplified things for sure.... Fortunately, the books' focus on this seems mostly minimal anyway. Although I have to wonder why there was so much Shalladin stuff if nothing would come of it. Sure it makes sense in a real life scenario, but it sort of feels out of place in OB.
  2. What do you mean, not chosen at all? Not chosen anyone specifically?
  3. I used to be a Shalladin shipper, but than I took an arrow to the- *inaudible smacking sound* Anyway, I'm glad that's no longer a concern. I was a bit disappointed that Shallan chose Adolin, but it was fairly inevitable. I couldn't see Brandon going back on that. But I realized Syladin is both way better and more likely (even though Kalazure is probably the most viable, sadly), so all is well. Not sure how that would work, but whatever.
  4. I took an embarrassingly long time to pick up on this. But yeah, Investiture is vaguely electromagnetic. Any possible implications of this? And where did Hoid get that much Aluminium? It's extremely rare in the Cosmere (or on all the planets where it's been mentioned), and that fits with how rare and valuable aluminium was in IRL medieval times.
  5. Particularly considering the fact that SA, in traditional "gigantic fantasy series" fashion, takes place 4000 YEARS after important historical events. It seems the timelines are proportional to the book length.... sort of.
  6. Although it seems to align with Shallan/the protagonists WAY more than usual in this book. It seems he's getting invested in the situation. Pun intended.
  7. Yeah, issue with that is Shallan chooses Adolin at the end of OB. Because she's dumb and boring. I can't see her going back on that decision, really. I think it'd undermine her character.
  8. I recently said I liked Kalazure (seriously, the best thing about ships is giving them dumb names), but.... Syladin is better, I think. The two already have a relationship, and Syl seems like the sort of character who's intended to mature as the series goes on. She's like.... uh... Nynaeve. Sort of. In a different way. Anyway, I expect Syl to continuously annoy Kaladin about his love life until he does something about it. The thing is, I can't really see Kaladin choosing to spend time with really anyone. He liked Shallan, but he barely even noticed he did until Syl pointed it out. I can imagine Syl gradually realizing she has feelings for him and coming to conclusions from that. However.... how would that work, exactly? I mean, not to state the obvious here, but Syl is only physically manifested in the Cognitive realm. Could she transfer to the Physical permanently to be with Kaladin? On the one hand, that sounds like something that would happen, but on the other that seems way too cliche for a Brandon Sanderson book. On the third hand, which I have because I'm a Wanderer, I think this series is going to end with at least some character Worldhopping, and Kaladin is a likely candidate. This narrows his relationship down to Azure, because Vivenna can obviously worldhop (frankly, this is the likely one).... or Syl, because if Kal becomes a WH then he's definitely finding a way to take Syl.
  9. All this stuff. I agree with everything you said here, even Adolin being meh-ish, but I have to say I like Syl better than Pattern. Pattern is amusing, but I don't really feel like he's a character. Syl has personality, and I can get interested in what she's up to. Although I feel the "Captured" arc in Shadesmar was a bit rushed. Oh, and I like that Hoid is actually getting involved in this story. He seems to care about what's going on, which is odd. But reassuring. You might say he's getting Invested in the storyline.
  10. Lessee. This part was fantastic! And sad. And happy! Well, not really. First off, storm you Moash! I know many have mentioned this, but Moash needs to die. Preferably soon. IF YOU HAD STUCK AROUND INSTEAD OF ABANDONING EVERYONE YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN ELHOKAR WAS A GOOD GUY YOU IDIOT ...Anyway, Dalinar's chapters were some of the best. The Rift was suitably horrifying, which is quite the accomplishment in writing. Particularly now that things like Game of Thrones exist. But this is good. Or bad. Wit's speech(es) to Shallan were the best part of this, though. He successfully prevented Shallan from going Book 12 Rand after a Heroic BSOD. Although this would've had less direct consequences. Oh, and I like Kalazure. I'll subscribe to that, now that Shallan chose Adolin.... grrrr EDIT: Nope, apparently Syladin exists. Swift ship shift!
  11. In what possible scenario would that have been a thing? I'm genuinely curious.
  12. Uhhhhhhh..... well, stormlight storage is based on size of gems as well as quality of cut, and ettmetal investiture storage is too. But I'm guessing here, I'm probably wrong. But the question still remains how nightblood is more invested than a shardblade, because I really don't think the OP is accurate. Entirely, at least.
  13. I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet. Someone a while ago mentioned that Brandon says things have a "cap" on the amount of investiture they can hold. He also says (Brandon) that things like Nightblood and Shardblades are near that cap, probably similarly near. We know that Nightblood is one of the most heavily invested things in the Cosmere, more so than shardblades. Finally, that limit is probably at least somewhat based on physical size, and Nightblood is a lot smaller than a Shardblade (though larger than a normal sword). Thusly... why can Nightblood hold so much Investiture? That doesn't make sense....
  14. Aaaaand up goes the comment section XD Anyway, that looks fantastic and I'd certainly like a copy. I mean, I have a copy of Oathbringer already... but so does everyone else, come on. "RAFO- Robet Jordan" - Ha! As for Hoid puzzling the hell out of everyone, that's debatable. The various statements by him are indicative of the underlying overarching storyline and bring to light various [read rest of post] [2376 words]
  15. Ah! Thanks, I was wondering about a lot of that. Hemalurgy doesn't actually use investiture at all, apparently.
  16. True. A lot more than normal, then.
  17. These are just the ones off the top of my head... "Perhaps it is the absolute value of the emotion that matters, rather than the positive or negative nature of the emotion" (Lightsong on experiencing stuff as an immortal) "What do you know?”“Almost everything. That almost part can be a real kick in the teeth sometimes.”“What do you want, then?”“What I can’t have.” Wit turned to him, eyes solemn. “Same as everyone else, Kaladin Stormblessed.” (Hoid in WoR) "I like visiting people in prison. I can say whatever I like about them, and they can't do anything about it" (Hoid again. Duh.) "Lightsong, what in the name of You are you talking about?" (Blushweaver after Lightsong points out that they are gods and so the standard phrase is irrelevant) "Nonsense. Balderdash. Figgldygrak. Isn't it odd that gibberish words are often the sounds of other words, cut up and dismembered, then stitched into something like them—yet wholly unlike them at the same time? I wonder if you could do that to a man. Pull him apart, emotion by emotion, bit by bit, bloody chunk by bloody chunk. Then combine them back together into something else, like a Dysian Aimian. If you do put a man together like that, Dalinar, be sure to name him Gibberish, after me. Or perhaps Gibletish." (okay, I looked that one up)(Hoid again) *Hoid's entire speech on the values of mankind in the end of WoR* *Literally every footnote in Allomancer Jak*
  18. To clarify, it was WoR in which Hoid mentions he has perfect pitch. But anyway... Hoid has to have a decent amount of investiture even before Oathbringer because of that. Perfect pitch is second heightening, which means >200 Breaths, which are investiture in themselves. Otherwise, we're not really sure how most magic forms function off world. Well, actually, that's not strictly true. Most investiture-using-methods aren't based off location. The exception of this is of course Sel, where the magic is entirely dependent on location owing to the Shattered bits of Dominion and Devotion (I think that's what they were) being trapped in the cognitive realm rather than the spiritual realm, where there are physical locations like in the physical realm. That's all very confusing, so what about Allomancy? The only person we've seen off their original world with allomancy is Hoid himself, and I think he used it in WoR in one of Shallan's flashbacks. So that works, presumably because allomancy relies on metals to channel Investiture, and thusly... overcomes the location barrier? I dunno. Awakening obviously works off-world, we saw that. The only reason Surgebinding works at all is because of spren bonds from Honor/Cultivation, so as long as your spren traveled with you that would work. Sand Mastery wouldn't work because of other worlds' lack of investiturily charged sand. And finally, hemalurgy... is weird and I forget how it works. There're actually some interesting ways to combine powers if you, although this currently only applies to one person. For example, lashing oneself to/towards someone and tapping furuchemical weight would be very effective, especially considering how Kaladin managed to crack shardplate WITHOUT using feruchemy (that looks like the right spelling...). Compounding is already overpowered. You could... ooh, what if you could awaken metal stuff with feruchemical attributes stored in it? Would it give the awakened object those traits? Or burn awakened metal, which presumably would give you the allomantic equivalent of the breaths stored in the metal, of the type that the type usually gives? For that matter, what is Nightblood technically made of? More research is required.
  19. So, I was thinking. The Cosmere is eventually going to have a conclusion, be that a long way off. And as we know, books take place a long way apart (I forget the technical timeline, but I know Mistborn series 1 takes places either ~300 or ~somethingthousand years before Way of Kings (and the characters die anyway, making my point moot)). Thusly, most of the protagonists willn't be around by the time this universe reaches its climax with Odium as the likely primary antagonist. So, what will that look like? Hoid will probably be important in some way, and we're eventually getting more information about Yolen. So, will other Shards ally to fight Odium? Will Hoid eventually hold all the shards and fight Odium by himself (almost certainly no, but one of my favorite theories anyway)? Will Sazed play a role (probably yes)? I'd love to here other theories on this, being as this universe isn't exactly formatted in a traditional manner. EDIT: Oh, and how do I bold this topic title? I'm new here.
  20. How have I never thought of this? I would say it's extremely likely. Hoid is... well, it's hard to say what his motivations are. Okay, impossible. But he seems like a good guy, or at least not directly evil, and he seems to like Kaladin, so he's okay in my book. Anyway, after rereading MSH, it looks like greed and/or power were the motivations of the original shatterers (new technical term), and thusly it was not a widely desired outcome. However, this is countered by the fact that, for the most part, the original shard holders seem like good people. It's all very odd. The reason I'm bringing this up is because, if Hoid is motivated by good, this could lead him to restore Adonalsium because that's how he believes it should be. However again, this is speculative. He could, as suggested above, be trying to "become" adonalsium by holding all the shards. If this is the case, though, he's not doing a great job of it. One would think he would've played a larger part in the combining of Preservation and Ruin if this was the case, perhaps taking the Shards for himself somehow. Before answering this, we need to A) know Hoid's motivations, and B ) find out what the context was for the shattering. Was it a minority group, or a society-supported movement? Did the public at large even know about it? RAFO I suppose....
  21. That is... a really good question. He'd have to be an allomancer, but I should think yes. Unless his weird intelligence lottery thing has to do with investiture, in which case there might be some interference rule applications.
  22. These are all amazing, but I feel this: needs to be present here. It's meant to portray the feelings of the time during the highstorm where Shallan and Kaladin are realizing "Hey, your life was miserable too!" (to paraphrase). It's an amazing piece that perfectly captures the feeling of that scene, and it should have way more views.
  23. HYPE Really looking forward to this one. I'll be at a swim meet when the book comes out, but the minute I get back I intend to sit down and read the entire thing.
  24. Maybe it's the Rithmatist sequel at last! Of course, the fact that no one else has mentioned this likely means that this has been specified somewhere else and I'm missing something.
  25. When youŕe constantly making references on every website with a comment section, and nobody has recognized one yet in two years.... Also, I finally get to use this name on a website where people will know who it is! Hoorah.
