Yeah, maybe I would read further if the books were borrowed, but I'm not spending money continuing a series I didn't like the start of.

I hated Gardens of the Moon by the way. But I loved Tolkien and it seems that WoT is similar. I will definitely give it a go. The only thing that put me off is that my library only has the first three books.

btw, I have already read the top five. Those are my favourite books. WoT is the only good fantasy series I haven't read in my local library and I am thinking of reading The First Law as well.

I prefer high, epic, military fantasy books with developed, honourable characters and exhilarating action. I prefer good vs evil (where there are several shades of grey on the good side) to the dark cynical nature of grimdark fantasy. What is great about WoT and should I read it?

The Legendarium refers to all of Tolkien's works set in Middle Earth (Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion...)

I would make a two handed greats word made out of a mithril/valyrian steel alloy. Awaken it with the command "destroy my enemies" and set the bands of mourning in its hilt to provide an abundant source of investiture.

Gold compounders can heal on both the physical and spiritual realms (maybe cognitive as well?). Aside from ripping out their metal minds, could anything kill them?

I personally think that if you beheaded them with Nightblood, it would destroy both their spirit and conscience as well as their body, meaning that the metalminds cannot be metabolised by the person in order to grow back a new head.

The Faithful and the Fallen, it is in a similar style to ASOIAF and the fight scenes are incredible.

The Kingkiller Chronicle, the plot isn't particularly epic but the character development and prose are its strong points.

My favourite fantasy series in order are:

I found the Farseer Trilogy ok, wasn't impressed by Gardens of the Moon and hated Prince of Thorns

Personally, my favourite is the Silmarillion. Everybody dies, the characters are several shades of grey and it features some of the most epic deaths ever in fantasy fiction.

Fingolfin from the Silmarillion is my favourite and Feanor was pretty cool too. Boromir's was heartbreaking (although it was better in the movie). Kelsier's was epic purely due to the fact that he showed no fear at all when facing off against the Lord Ruler.

I'm not sure how to rank each of these series as I like them for different reasons. I think Martin's world is both epic and rich, however, I find the writing mediocre and after Ned's death, I didn't really care about any of the characters. Kingkiller on the other hand has beautiful prose but has a rather mundane plot and world in comparison. 

What are your thoughts? I'm open to arguments that may tip the scales in favour of either series.

Personally, I regard the Cosmere Cycle as one big series. A bit like Tolkien's Legendarium made up of seperate works that can be regarded as stand alone novels but come together in an overarching series.

Some food for thought for Legendarium fanboys out there! How would you compare the power level of a shard to an average Vala? Maia? Adonalsium vs Melkor?

Which of the three realms does a shardblade affect when it strikes living flesh?

Would a Shardblade be able to kill a ringwraith?

Would you describe the Cosmere Cycle as one large series or a collection of different series?
