@Mistbornwithakitty *hugs.* It's hard to advise on this sort of thing. However, I will say this. Is he really your friend if he so easily and constantly shuts you down when you have a disagreement? It may be that you put a higher value to your friendship than he does which is something serious to consider. If there can be no dialogue the question truly becomes is this friendship worth it? Remember your well being matters and if your feelings are being ignored it might be time to cut this "friend" out of your life because they don't really seem to care much for your feelings.

Thank you so much for the solid advice.  I was just really sad last night, but today has brought some clarity.  I'm not going to make any rash decisions, but this definitely is a pattern of behavior that I've accepted for fear of being alone (as I live a weird transient life and don't really have many people I can call my friends).  Thank you all for the hugs and encouragement.  It means a lot!^_^

  2. I have this online friend.  We've been friends for years now, as we met through a video game.  When we're together, we get along like a house on fire...until we don't.  He shuts down whenever things get weird or one of us gets mad and blocks me out (sometimes literally).  I've told him over and over over this hurts my feelings and makes me just feel like dirt, as he'll work through hard things with others.  He says it's just different with me.  I'm not sure why, as I'm familiar with his history with others and they do him far dirtier and he still finds a way to make up.

I just don't understand and when I ask, he won't explain. It's a struggle to understand each other when he's like this, as he blocks me out.  I don't want to end the friendship, but it's been years of this off-on again bond that goes from us being inseparable to being ghosted if we argue/hurt each other's feelings.  I'm just tired of it and it really stings.

P.S. He knows about everything I've said.  This is all stuff I've said to him personally quite a few times.  Just looking for an outward perspective and hugs. :)

That's been there for a while.

I love hyping myself up for a cool Mistborn TV series, only to let myself down 7 minutes later.   It's still a pretty sweet logo!

    He's sworn the fifth ideal.

That should be the announcement tbh.

  4. The pandemic has leveled up Mr. Sanderson.  He's buffed his writing and multi-tasking stats like a madman.

Not to put all of us (aka just myself) into panic mode, but does the final little credit outro kinda look like a film company logo?  I mean, maybe it's appeared multiple times in his videos, but I just haven't caught it before...but it looks new?

  5. Oh gosh, I love recommending books.  I'd like to know what you're into first though, as I don't want to recommend an enimies-to-lovers romance when you're preferred story type is an intergalactic quest with lots of descriptions of bloody battles.  Both are great, but you may not think so!

  6. Oooh this is a great thought!  Now that you mention it, I really hope we get to see these in the next book.  My instinct would tell me that we won't (maybe we'll get flashbacks in later books or a future worldhopping-Hoid easter egg), because it may reveal too much about him.  But still!!!

Maybe one would be that he's sometimes not sure who he is.  A being that long-lived...I mean, I can't imagine.  Must be hard to keep who you are straight sometimes.

  7. First off, amazing thread.   I love talking about deep topics that are normally frowned upon in modern society!

I don't know who I would be without my belief in God, I really don't.  I know it affects everything I do, from the way I speak to others, to my priorities in life, even how I think.  Yet, it's not oppressive or a burden in any sort of way.  I want to do it, I'm so grateful to be a child of God that it's all something I'm willing to do happily.  There are of course moments when it would be easier to be like popular culture says you should be, sometimes it's really tempting to dress a certain way so guys will look at you or skip your daily Bible reading session to scroll Instagram.  Yet, it never ends up being worth it, which I think is why I'll always stand by my faith.  It's never been wrong.  If I go against what the Bible says, I usually naturally regret it in the end.

God has always been there for me.  I've literally seen miracles happen in ways that could literally only be a higher power.  It's led me to have an unshakable trust, one that I'm still building.  Everything and I mean everything, will always work out.

It's also taught me to be nice to everyone, no matter who they are.  Society often paints Christians as intolerant and judgey.  While that is sometimes true, God's Word teaches us to be the opposite. I'm supposed to love my neighbor, period.  It doesn't say I have to agree with what they do, but I'm supposed to love them as I love myself.  This is something that I try to take to heart.

Also, it gives me permission to have very different dreams of the future than others.  My previous co-workers were truly thrown for a loop that I didn't want a "normal" career, especially since I'm such a hard worker.  I told them I wanted to run a business from my home one day and be a housewife while homeschooling my future kids.  This was basically how I'd grown up and the idea made no sense to them.  I didn't go out and get drunk on the weekend or party, I would usually just stay at home with my family and read a book, which also baffled them.  I was told, "You're young, there's plenty of time to be boring when you're old."  Although to me, that's considered a very pleasant weekend.^_^

It can make some things harder.  Dating is nigh impossible.  I live in Europe and am very intent on finding someone who shares the same morals/beliefs I do.  I haven't found one yet!

All in all, I really love being a Christian.  I don't know where I would be without God, as being a slightly nervous personality, I lean on Him so much for my strength.  I've never ever been disappointed.  If anyone wants to discuss any of it further, please DM me!  I'd love to make some friends, whatever your personal beliefs.

  8. That chaper....hurt my feelings.

Adolin is literal BEST BOY.  Do I see a bromance on the horizon?  I love the interactions between him, Shallan, and Kaladin.  Such banter, never a dull moment.  Kaladin has such good friends to back him up.  Hopefully they'll keep being there when he needs it most.

My suspicions about Shallan are being proved correct.  She *isn't* as stable as she seems to pretend.  In fact, she may be the opposite of stable.  Intriguing that Radiant said Kaladin makes things better for her...which brings me to my next suspicion.

I think Adolin's going to die in this book.  Just the way Kaladin is admiring him, the way he's saying he's the perfect general, cares about everyone.  It almost sounds like he's eulogizing him already.  Maybe it's a false lead and I'm being duped, but it appears that he's the next to go.  It would make sense and would move forward the plot.  Especially if he sacrificed himself in some way.  That being said, I'm not totally convinced.  What do you guys think?

Lastly, Rock nooo! You really don't know how much you'll miss a character until they say they're leaving.  Ouch.  Hopefully he's treated kindly by his homeland.

  9. This chapter was....heartbreaking.  I mean, I loved every second and I honestly did NOT see Kaladin being relieved of duty, but maaannnn this is going to force his emotional hand hard.  He's being forced to move and confront.  I'm loving it.  I hope he eventually decides to go back and become some sort of medic.  That would really bring things full-circle!

  10. So bad news, oof.  I ordered my copy of WOR only to find that it won't be delivered till the 2nd of September because they're suddenly out of stock at my local bookstore chain?  In the desperate attempt not to loose money, I'm going to be beeehiinnnndddd.

But not to worry!  I'm still going to be commenting on y'alls posts!

On top of that, I misplaced my WOK book for most of the week, so I'm on the last chapters now.  Update to come in a day or two!

Ch. 55 Rock, revealing he was trained as a soldier as a 4th son, insists he's 3rd son and a cook. Apart from Rock lying here, it's a weird caste system they have. Birth order assigning jobs so specifically. But, Horneaters are descended, in part, from Singers who can switch forms to suite a task.  Singers of old may have been like "you take workform, you take warform,  you take scholar form" etc. to their offspring. If one died, one of the others would take a different form to step in to perform whatever task was needed.

That's so interesting!  I didn't know Horneaters were descended from Singers...maybe that's why Rock can see Syl?

              Kaladin: Congratulations!  I hate you.

Congratulations!  I love your commentary!  There's too much to comment on everything, but this quote made me laugh out loud.  And you can change from bullet points and just go to whatever is easiest!  Do what is most fun.

I think I was kind of fascinated and terrified by cryptics on my first read. Those scenes with Shallan read like horror for a bit and I love it. Horror and fantasy should mix way more often.

YES!!  I agree with you.  The first time I read about the cryptics it took me completely by surprise.  I remember actually being physically shook.  It comes out of nowhere, but in the best way.

I still love Kaladin. My heart just breaks for him in every single chapter. And I hate knowing what happens with Moash because I know that Kaladin cares about him just like he cares about the rest of Bridge 4.

And, I want to be Navani when I grow up. She's awesome. Jasnah is, too, but she lacks the empathy that Navani has.

Kaladin is best boi, always.  Moash is worst boi, always.

We should all want to be Navani when we grow up!  To me, she holds the essence of a strong woman.  Strong, while still having normal human emotions.

I honestly got the same vibe here.

It becomes ridiculous but in just 6 chapters Brandon in one way or another connected Kaladin to more female characters than in all three previous books combined. Glances, dating info, interactions, positive reactions. This is getting weird.

It honestly sounds like he's being set up to face his fears of loosing those he loves.  He needs to accept that sometimes, *he* needs someone too (which was sort of faced in the last book, but not to the extent that I think he *needs* to face it).  I mean, even Syl has mentioned it guys.  Like, repeatedly.  He's not done with the issue.  Will the attachment be romantic?  Maybe.  But he has to develop some sort of support system.  I have a feeling his family will be involved in this next bit of evolution as much as a potential life partner.

This shipping of Kaladin and Leshwi is very strange to me. Honorable she may act on the field of battle, but is she not, in essence, an undead abomination who kills parshendi women to take over their bodies? If her next “incarnation” was one of the women Kal befriended in the beginning of the last book, I do not think he would find that cute.

I agree with you!  It's odd.  Interesting, but odd nonetheless. There's something there.  Maybe it's just finding honor among the enemy or maybe it's romantic.  I have a feeling its more of a respect between generals.  That he sees himself in her a bit and vice versa, more of a "uncomfortable but friendly" relationship....I don't know if that makes any sense.

  12. I'm sure someone has already said this, but this Leshwi-Kaladin dynamic is perplexing. He....grinned while chasing her?  Our Bridge-Boi?  Happy chasing the enemy?  Quite intriguing.

I also am READY for this assassination attempt to go down!  You know what they say: a couple that faces murder charges together, stays together.;)

  13. Warning!!  Big Long Post ahead!

I'm late again.  We're going for on time next week. I promise!  lol.

Eventful chapters this week!  Read most of it on my breaks at work.  Nothing like chilling with a huge Stormlight Archive novel on your lap as you eat in 90 degree weather.

--Navani and Dalinar start courting!  Just...ugh *chef's kiss*.  It's harder to write about middle-age romance and this was done so perfectly.  Not completely like a young adult/first love story, but with maturity and notes of playfulness.  Also that it's a "forbidden" thing kinda tickles me.  That particular trope is usually exclusively for young adults/teens.  A refreshing take, as always!

--Kaladin's beginning to notice that maybe it's not all just luck.  Maybe he's survived for a reason??  They're all about to save Dalinar.  Can't wait for next week!!  Seeing him as a bridgeman and knowing where he goes is a TRIP.  Especially reading the new RoW chapters.  Major character adjustment/growth.

--Shallan is now an outcast dun dun dunnnnnn.  Re-reading, I actually think it was just punishment.

---Sades is trash.  Need I say more?

    Chapter Two

    • Annnd tone change.
    • 'Honor died eight months ago' Kaladin is being a touch dramatic, but he deserves that.  He gets to be dramatic.
    • SYLLLLLLL
    • Gosh, I love Syl.

THIS!  Syl is a constant mood at first.  Kaladin does deserve to be as emo as he likes.

So I read ahead and finished all the books a few times, but something I noticed on a reread of WoR: In the Taln interlude, one guy mentions that Hoid hit himself in the head with a rock several times. Hoid can't hurt himself. How could he hit himself in the head with a rock (several times, no less)? Workarounds: He didn't actually hit himself in the head with a rock, merely pretended to. He doesn't consider hitting himself in the head with a rock to be hurting himself. He genuinely hurt himself by hitting himself in the head with a rock (since his inability to hurt people isn't a complete incapability, it just causes him pain to do so or even think of doing so).

Doesn't Hoid have a lot of magic powers we probably don't know about?  I have a feeling that could heal him from hitting himself on the head.  He also mentions that "I'm going away, probably will be back eventually.  I may die, will probably come back anyway." Something like that?  He's a mystery man.  Nobody knows!  But a rock probably isn't going to do much (lol watch stones be his ONE weakness).

    Chapter Twelve

    • And our first meeting with the upper echelon of the war camps.
    • Sadeas spoke, and I had an immediate reaction of distaste.
    • Ah, Adolin and his constant courtship failures.  It's strangely endearing.  He's trying - but he's not... not doing very well.
    • Elhokar has yellow eyes currently.
    • The Alethi system of government...  I'm not sure this is working in their favor.
    • I agree with Adolin's opinions on hunts.
    • Adolin, bro, you don't want the old Dalinar back.
    • WIT!
    • If I knew him, I'd probably want to smack him, but he is really funny on page.

Does Elhokar's eyes ever change?  And yes, Adolin/Wit are always best boiz.  Keep working through your notebook!  I love hearing your thoughts.

  14. So I've just taken a dive and read this entire thread.  Maybe this'll provide a little more understanding:

I have a bit of experience in this area, having dealt with stuff like this as a teenager.  I'm not going to go into it, I don't really feel the need, but what Galivar did to Navani in that prologue *did* make my senses goes "oh no oh no oh no oh nooooo".  For me, this is an obvious sign of gaslighting/verbal/emotional abuse going on.  Especially how Navani went on to express how he never did these things in front of anyone else.  He was good in front of everyone but her.  Ouch.

BUT in others defense, these cues are only obvious to those of us who've experience them or have been affected by them through others.  I don't think we should expect others to immediately jump to our conclusions just because they don't read into things the same way.  We can't blame others for not having the same thoughts/reactions.  If Galivar is truly being written this way, the truth will out and this debate will be over.

So I think we should all wait until this book is out, and then we can condemn/rationalize as we see fit.  That's just my two cents though!

Reminds me a little bit of Dalinar and Eshonai in book 1 and 2 when they were looking to face each other each time they went into battle. Though this already seems to be a far more personal thing than that.

*Whew* Wasn't the only one that noticed it, thank goodness!  And yeah, it does seem strangely personal... Not saying it's a new ship....but it's a beginning of weird relationship at some point.  Maybe Kaladin's going to have some second thoughts?

    7 minutes ago, GudThymes said:

OTP. What's their couple name? Lesdin? Kalahwi?

    Oh definitely Kalahwi!  Sounds cooler.

Lol, just said this wasn't a new ship...promptly votes on the OTP name.:P

  16. Amazing as always, I could babble on forever about the immense, almost embarrassing joy these weekly installments bring me, but I'll spare you!

I cannot tell for the life of me if Shallan is cruising for a bruisin with her multiple personalities or she has actually found a decent balance.  I think only time will tell, but I'm leaning towards bruising right now.  I wonder where this is going....

Protective Adolin!!!  Love to see it, even if it was bad timing.  Looks like we're getting that marital friction we all knew was coming.

It was such a whirlwind to see all these orders of Radiants in action.  I had trouble keeping up, but woweee have things changed in Roshar.  Also, the battle was unexpectedly cool.  I'm not usually a huge fan of physical conflict, but this struck a good balance, in my opinion.

I'm just going to say it, the battle between Leshwi and Kaladin was....abnormal.  If you look back on the language used to describe Leshwi's fighting, it's mostly positive (saying things like she was graceful, pointing out her good moves, how she's better opponent etc).  Kaladin really seems to respect her, while he holds an almost casual hatred towards the other Singers.  Yet, he looks for her in battle.  You can't tell me this isn't going to turn into some sort of weird friendship.  I'm not the only one, right? lol.

  17. Heya!  Welcome to the best forum on the internet.:P  I can't believe you started with Way of Kings!  It's like starting a video game on the boss battle.  Are their any other fantasy series you like?

  18. Hullo, I'm late with my reading, but I already stated that last post.  My book got caught out in the rain, so after mourning and doing appropriate funeral rights, I'm back on track!

Here are my thoughts for the week:

--Kabsal, Kabsal. Kabsal, if I needed anymore proof that I have bad taste in men, I loved his character first time round.  Yet, he turned out to be an assassin.  Basically the story of my life. lol.

--Can I just say Jasnah is such a perplexing character?  I'm actually quite enjoying what a trope-breaker she is.  She's strong, yet some could say that she might be *too* strong, in the way that it almost comes across as hard-hearted.  Her vaporizing those thieves is definitely a grey line.  If I had a favorite character of the week, this week would belong completely to Jasnah.

--Shallan about to be caught for stealing that soulcaster.  Yikes.

--Kaladin's always finding a new bottom in this book.  Just when he thinks he's hit, he finds a new one.  Makes me realize how much of a sucker I am for an underdog!  Also, his flashback chapters always have a hint of sadness, because I know where he ends up.

So yeah, I got a question.  If you had to pick a character of the week, who would you choose?  Curious!

Otherwise, not much to say this week.  I didn't take proper notes, due to the aforementioned busy/weird schedule.  Besides a waterlogged book, some friends are leaving town.  Will be back to normal this week!
