Personally, when he said "vaporized", I took that pretty much literally. The metal becomes vapor and is expelled from the body. Makes "burning" a little more literal as well. So that mass is conserved; the metal is now airborne particulates that will settle, accumulate, and be recycled by future Allomancers and industrialists.
