Oudeis said that Lopen must have been something before because he was never near Kaladin after Kaladin spoke the third ideal. Unless I've missed something completely, I think they were together. One of the first things Kaladin is asked after he reaches Urithiru is Navani's question about her son. Kaladin says, "I put him someplace safe before coming to help Dalinar." We know that 'someplace' was with Lopen and the Herdazians. I know it doesn't say it in the book, but I think it safe to assume that Kaladin took Elhokar there and, therefore, most likely spoke to Lopen before leaving for the battlefield.
