  1. Found one. "the officer would be relived." Should be relieved in the context given. Location is after the third break/separation/chapter bar? about 5 paragraphs in.

    Another. After the 5th break.

A line of bullets blasted through he window just beside Jason.

  2. That makes sense, however, I thought Harmony only read Wax's mind when he had the earring in.

I believe that is because of: 1 - Wax's faith in Harmony and 2 - Ruins ability to control and communicate with spiked people.

  3. Well, I just read these books last week. I agree with the assessments here. Here are a few of the things I took from the book.

Kvothe is of the Lackless line.

Naming is involved in the frame where Kvothe seems fundamentally different.

The door in the archives is connected with the Lackless thread.

There is something connecting the moon, the chandrian, and the Lackless.

Rough theories on my part, showing a reread is foretold in the near future.

  4. A little bit of added fuel for the discussion. This is based completely on the theology of Warbreaker. Vivenna is, at first, very reluctant to even think of taking/giving breaths away. Her people's teachings are that your breath is a part of your soul. It fits very well with your theory, Windrunner, that the spiritual realm contains the feelings. And a bit more opinion based here, but emotions tie in to a spiritual aspect very well. You could say that Experiences(Physical) and how they affected you (feelings/spiritual) create the way you see the world(cognitive). Somewhat vague there, but that is how I see things in the three realms.

  5. I am not trying to say that Shadesmar and the cognitive realm are two different places. The way I tried to word my theory was to use Shadesmar as the "physical location" and cognitive as the "feeling". Let me clarify. You have the physical realm, the cognitive/shadesmar and the spiritual realm. To me, I think of Shadesmar as the "land of thought" and every living thing has some type of thought process. Thus creating an echo of thoughts from the physical realm into Shadesmar. The more thoughts in an area, the easier to find in Shadesmar. And this is why I used "cognitive presence". The "cognitive presence" is the concentrated thoughts echoing from the physical realm into Shadesmar/Cognitive Realm. The reactions from the types of life in the physical realm bouncing into the Cognitive realm are essentially what makes each planet special. A shard's presence amplifies this and defines what we see. I hope this clarifies my original thoughts.

  6. I see several theories touching on my opinion. Mentions of the Cognitive Realm are abundant, but I think that Shadesmar is the key. If a planet has life, it should have a cognitive presence. The greater cognitive presence, the easier to find in Shadesmar. The particular aspect of Shadesmar interacting with the planet magics and life are what creates the access. The flavor of magic (i.e. metal based vs. color based) is from the interaction of shadesmar, Adonalsium and the planet's peculiarities. And the name comes from the mix of all three. As to definitions of planet names, keep going, because I have no clue there.

The above link will take you to Tor's vote for the best novel, short story, and cover of 2011. Some may have already been there, but I figured that others may want to know. There are a lot of good choices on the list, so please don't take this as an arm twisting. All books published by anyone are acceptable votes as long as they came out in 2011. Show your support for your favorite book!

  8. If Hoid is evil, I think would be unintentional. If you look at what we know of Hoid, he seems to give our heroes the information they need at the right moments. Look at how he treats Renarin. He encourages him to use his strengths rather than trying to be a warrior like his dad and big brother. Also, look at his scene with Kaladin, I think that the guidance given is on a well-to-do level, and anything evil is in consequence of trying to help.
