Is reading The Stormlight Archive worth it?
gbazz4 replied to Red Ferring's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think Szeth is an interesting character, not my favorite mind you but i really appreciate him. His inner turmoil is interesting to follow. I actually think he showed that he was strong of will. He hated what he was doing but believed it was what was required of him by his religion and held strongly to that belief. I think that it takes a lot of will to do that when you hate everything you are doing. I tend to agree with Slater. I really enjoy Adolin's scenes and i feel confident he will continue to get them. I know Maxal that you are worried about Adolin's role going forward given he will not be getting his own book. Would it have been nice to know he was getting a book, yes. Since he is not getting a book I tend to trust that Brandon has a plan and the series will work out great. From what people have said on the forum Brandon didn't originally have Adolin as a major character. I think that it is a positive for him remaining relevant and growing throughout the series that he was actually given a POV and a strong role when that wasn't the original plan. Why elevate a character only to cast him aside later? I don't recall him doing anything like that in his other works i have read, but it has been a while since i have read works like mistborn, warbreaker, and elantris (though it is possible i didn't catch or remember it happening). I think through 2 books we have seen his character grow without being the central piece of the book. Even without a flashback book he will still be part of the story in a strong way and i think we will continue to see that even if he isn't the central piece of a book. I would hate to see him get pushed to the wayside, but i don't feel that will happen. I love his dueling and fighting scenes and i feel those will continue even if he doesn't have his own book. So i am going to continue to believe that Brandon will take care of the Adolin fans by making him important throughout the books, even if it is without his own book, since i have not seen a reason to doubt that will be the case given how the first two books have gone. -
Really in this day and age anyone can be either darkeyes or lighteyes...thank you color contact lenses!

This information is helpful because i too wondered why Shallan took 10 heartbeats to summon her shardblade. I wasn't really thinking of how her perception matters, so everyone's points make sense especially in the context of the WOB mentioned in the interview.

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.

As it relates to uniforms i got it stuck in my head that Sadeas' army wore red. Maybe it has to do with him having a red nose, or i think he his shardplate is red. I read this passage in WOK on Kaladin's first bridge run that i think is referring to Sadeas and his shardplate being red. "As he finished, the last of the foot soldiers passed over the bridge. They were followed by several mounted lighteyes in gleaming armor. At their center rode a man in majestic, burnished red Shardplate. It was distinct from the one other Kaladin had seen—each suit was said to be an individual work of art—but it had the same feel. Ornate, interlocking, topped by a beautiful helm with an open visor." As i just started rereading the Way of Kings i just noticed that the description for his colors and symbol were a yellow glyphpair in the shape of a tower and a hammer on a field of deep green. but not matter what i think i keep picturing his army wearing red. -
Is reading The Stormlight Archive worth it?
gbazz4 replied to Red Ferring's topic in Stormlight Archive
I absolutely recommend reading the stormlight archives if you are fan of the Cosmere and Brandon's other works. Yes it is long. But for me i cannot put the books down. I am actually starting a 3rd reread of WOK and then will do a 3rd reread of WOR after that. After being on the forum for a few weeks i realized there is so much detail and so many connections that i haven't seen before when i just read the books for enjoyment. I am actually combing through the text with a much more focused eye trying to see little details that i previously thought were just fluff that actually are interesting and connected to larger themes in the books. The fascinating thing to me was reading about the world of Roshar, As Navybrandt says it takes a while to get used to because it is completely different conceptually then most fantasy works i have read. But that was refreshing to me because it was so different from everything else i have read and i just wanted to immerse myself more in the world. The magic system is something i love for the way he built it. and the powers people can have It takes a while to really get the adrenaline pumping but when it does it is can't put down reading. There is a enough interesting stuff happening i feel that makes up for it taking a while to get really rolling. You have to consider that Brandon is setting up a mammoth 10 book series so there is a lot of world building and backstory that is being laid out early on to set the stage for later books. The WOK was a little slow early, but the last 150 pages or so were exhilarating...anyone else want to add in on what they thought of the Tower scene in WOK? I thought it was awesome and couldn't stop reading. There are so many unanswered questions in WOK that you will want to go right into WOR. I think because of that WOR will have a lot more going on earlier on in the book. Then it too has an epic climax where the last portion of the book is intense and full of action. Then it too leaves you with more questions and more theories of what will happen, which will provide you with good ideas for posts on the forum. So i wholeheartedly endorse the series. To me it is my favorite series right now. I am someone who loves Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, Harry Potter, and many other series, but this one is my favorite and i think it will continue to be as more books get released. -
Facepalm-worthy Moments during Readings

Realizing after a second read through of WOK and WOR that when Shallan stumbles upon Tvlakv after she washes up on the beach that he is the same slaver who sold Kaladin in WOK. -
Who is your favourite character in SA?
gbazz4 replied to missionaryofgod's topic in Stormlight Archive
My favorite is Kaladin. Like many have mentioned he drove me nuts for most of WOR. I got frustrated a lot with how he acted but he redeemed himself on many occasions. When Adolin is in trouble during the duel and he says "Honor is Dead" then jumps over the wall to help him, that was a great moment in my opinion. Granted when he called out Amaram, which wasn't with the plan everyone thought up for the duel, i was like "what are you doing you idiot!" Then his being upset the after that and his plotting to kill Elhokar annoyed me. But then when he finally comes around and protects him and says the words i was pumped up. It only got better for me after that when he fights Szeth. My other Favorites include: Dalinar i am a sucker for someone who acts honorably. He acts different than most light eyes, cares about his men, and is in general a beast on the battlefield. I have an affinity for Syl. She amuses me with her comments, is essentially Kaladin's conscience, and without her Kaladin can't become a KR. Adolin has grown on me. At times he is spoiled, but then again what can you expect from someone who grew up as privileged as he did. But in WOR i felt he grew a lot. I love his dueling scenes and his motivation to protect his family. I am one of the people who appreciates Szeth. I think when i reread the WOR i grew to appreciate him more. I get he kills a lot of people which is terrible. But his inner turmoil about how he hates killing versus holding to his religious beliefs and following the orders of whoever possesses his oathstone is what makes him interesting. I look forward to seeing how he develops in the coming books. @Sun Tzaro, great breakdown of the complexity of his character. It was an interesting read. I like many of the other characters but those are probably my favorite among them. A shout out to Rock and Lopen for helping keep things light and entertaining. -
HornEater stew? Staple of Bridge 4's diet and it brings everyone together in camaraderie.

Funniest Scenes in Stormlight Archive (so far)
gbazz4 replied to Tetriona's topic in Stormlight Archive
I find Lopen generally humrous, and rock. I also like a lot of what pattern says. This is one of my favorite exchanges: Shallan cocked an eyebrow at him. “I have guessed that what you said is humorous,” Pattern said. “Though I do not know why. It was not a joke. I know of jokes. A soldier came running into camp after going to see the prostitutes. He was white in the face. His friends asked if he had found a good time. He said that he had not. They asked why. He said that when he’d asked how much the woman charged, she’d said one mark plus the tip. He told his friends that he hadn’t realized they were charging body parts now.” Shallan grimaced. “you heard that from Vathah’s men, didn’t you?” “Yes. It is funny because the word ‘tip’ means several different things. A payment made in addition to the sum initially charged, usually given voluntarily, and the top piece of something. In addition, I believe that ‘the tip’ means something in the slang of the soldiers, and so the man in the joke though the was going to cut off his-“ “Yes, thank you,” Shallan said. Can you point me to where you learned that? I must have missed it in the books but it sounds fascinating. Thanks.

Thanks for all the comments. They have given me some stuff to think about. I get the idea that the interludes are showing other areas of the world as part of world building. It just seemed to me like there was also a point to all of them beyond just showing other parts of the world that the main characters weren't visiting. Lift and Ym show other KR are starting to show up around the world and they show that Nalan is hunting down KR that break the law to uphold justice. Eshonia shows the process by which the Parshendi become the Voidbringers. I just couldn't see what the point of Rysn was. The point brought up about the Larkin being important makes sense. until it was pointed out i didn't realize the creature was the same one that sucked stormlight out of Lift. I could also see the idea of Rysn being a proto-radiant. She is broken by her fall off the island (broken physically, as opposed to emotionally as Kaladin and Shallan are broken. I am not sure being broken to become a KR is limited to emotional breaking, physical breaking could i suppose also allow one to become a KR), so i guess it could make sense that she might find her way into a KR order in subsequent books. Thanks for giving me a lot to think about and for your responses.

Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum, so if this was covered please point me in the direction of the post covering it. I get what is going on in most of the interludes and feel like I see the point of Ym, Lift, or Eshonia. When i read the Rysn interludes about the trade mission in the Reshi Sea i struggle with figuring out how this is playing into the overall story of the book. I know i am missing something. Can someone enlighten me and explain how this is important and how it connects with the rest of the book? Thanks and Much appreciated in advance.
