I totally understand the feeling - but get this: you will have freedom to reinvent yourself over and over again if you like. "Peers," as you know them, are a unique result of the environment you're in. You can go and find new friends everywhere. Fair warning, your vetting process will have to adjust... like, a lot. One thing both Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat have had problems with is: consequence. They hint at it, but arcs wrap themselves up with no aftereffects almost as soon as what they mean is clarified (unintentional, but fitting pun). New Who deserves credit for attempting seasonal arcs in the first place, but they tend to be: name drop something once every episode or two, warn of it, and it turns out to just be the season ender. Bad Wolf? The Face of Boe's message to the Doctor? The Impossible Girl? Hooks more than running storylines.

Back in the day, we had BBSes. You had to dial into them with your modem (which was exty-ex hundred baud) and you got basically a forum with a bunch of files you could download. All the shareware was there. Awesome games which you could be sure nobody you met at school would have even heard of, so... not really impressive to anybody.

Around here, school measures usually fail whenever tax is mentioned, but if it's a bond, people are fine with that. Then, 10-ish years later, they're surprised at the budget crunch because... bonds are paid back with interest!
