  1. Spren are just an awesome idea, and Axies the Collector is easily one of my favorite single-chapter-characters ever. And I can't help thinking that creating different 'species' of spren has got to be an incredibly enjoyable task for Brandon. So, since Brandon has so thoughtfully laid the groundwork for these creatures (they almost always correlate to the presence of emotions and phenomena), I thought it'd be a shame if we sharders didn't take advantage of that fact and try to attract some creationspren of our own. Now for a short list of rules and guidance: Rules: 1) Only include three spren per post, maximum. However, feel free to describe these spren as deeply and intimately as you wish. 2) Physical descriptions and the conditions for appearance are required. Be short/blunt if you wish, but at least share that much detail in addition to the name. Reasoning for these two rules? Well, they keep creativity up and 'spamming' down. In other words, they enforce Sanderson's Third Law: "Expand what you already have before you add something new." And I'm sure that's a law all of you can respect Guidance: While it'd be nice if your creations followed the general trend of sincerity in worldbuilding set by Branderson, you are free to create more 'wacky' spren if you follow the rules. For example: Cookiespren. Little brown lumps of varying size and lumpitude that roll lethargically around gatherings of quality-made cookies. Can be fooled into rolling around hemalurgic spikes disguised as cookies. While creating the cookispren, I realized another somewhat important guideline. A cookie is a very specific object, and spren don't form around such specified objects. A cookie is not an emotion, phenomenon, or concept (Please don't argue this point. While this argument would be hilarious, it is absolutely derailment material.), and so a spren for it does not fit Branderson's pattern. However, create as you see fit. The following should be a very useful tool in both reminding yourself of typical spren patterns and in making sure you're not creating a spren that already exists. Because that's redundant and creationspren will shun you forever. http://coppermind.net/wiki/Spren Note that there are potential spoilers for Words of Radiance (and, I suppose, Way of Kings, but... yeah). And without further ado, I'll kick off the sprenception with three of my own creations: Techspren - Copper-colored, wiry, overlapping squares. Occasionally appear around electronic devices, but swarm when an electronic is malfunctioning, making the issue somewhat more difficult to view and assess. Stinkspren - Waving, sickly green patches of transparent air. It's not known whether stinkspren cause bad smells or are attracted by them. Either way, their presence indicates a need for pure air. Quickly. Lovespren - Subtly pulsating, deep red cardioids. Only found in the presence of couples who have honestly proclaimed love for each other. Refuse to appear to falsely proclaimed or unrequited love. Considered to be a sign of good fortune, but in reality are just confirming the result of hard work already accomplished. Unfortunately, they are not prophetic of future happiness.
  2. Photographic Memory (instantly thought of Shallan, was not disappointed)>The Stormlight Archive>Brandon Regenerating Health>Healing Factor>Mistborn>Brandon The Something Force>Awesome McCool Name-Literature>Brandon Finger Twitching Revival>No One Could Survive That (which has an awesome page quote from Warbreaker)>Warbreaker>Brandon Sexy Santa Dress (lol)>Pimped-Out Dress-Literature>Mistborn: The Original Trilogy>Brandon We Do the Imossible (sore lack of Kelsier's crew)>One-Man Army-Literature>Mistborn>Brandon ...and I'll stop there. Doing this has made me realize that Branderson is depressingly underrepresented on TVTropes. Maybe I'll have to try and fix that...
  3. You create magic systems based on things you see during your day. And then either alter them or discard them because they don't follow Sanderson's First Law well enough to be implemented heavily in a story someday. You think of how useful those stained glass windows would be to Vin every time you go to church... >_> You see a shuriken/throwing star and think it's a good freaking thing allomancers use coins instead. You're in physics class talking about elastic collisions and can't think of anything but that allomantic physics theory the whole class period. You blame spren for certain things. Or everything. An app crashes? Storming techspren! Feet and shoes smell awful? It's the stinkspren, I swear by the Stormfather!
  4. What constitutes an object that can be invested with breath? OR What is the smallest physical structure that can be invested? (Atoms, molecules, visible structures?) Also, is there an Ultimate List of RAFO'd Questions I could peruse anywhere?
  5. I just Hoid a Storming rough day, spent the whole thing Weeping and I Felt Lifeless. I had a plan to go on a Grand adVenture to Steel someTin known as a “Gemheart” and then Sel it to the bidder with the highest Endowment and Intent to buy. I asked my friend, “Kandra help me Wit this job? I don’t trust a Thug to have the Honor or Devotion I require.” “Of course Elend a hand,” he replied with a Radiant smile. “I Mist having you around, this job’ll be a Realmatic Snap with you on board.” So we Set off on our misShin from the local Dox, singing “Just Around the Riverspren” (my partner singing the Melody, me the Harmony) and eating roast Ham to Soothe our Spooked spirits. The Breeze would Wax and Wayne with the flow of the river, and my partner and I were Awakened multiple times by eerie Phantom sounds. The river passed under a Bridge and opened into a Marsh, and we eventually reached dry land. My partner found the clearing to the Shattered Plains first, and we instantly saw our prize. The gemheart was right there, on a Heightened pedestal in the midst of a sea of Pits and Wells. We could both feel a Pull towards this artifact, this Sphere of Colors, illuminating the plains with its metallurgic auras of Gold, Silver, and Bronze. My friend Pushed me down with violent force, a gleam of Rioting emotion in their Darkeyes. My friend sprints toward the gemheart, and Iron to catch up. But I’m too late. My friend touches the sphere, and it Splinters itself and my friend into 1,024 Shards that shoot straight up, and then fall like Ash from an Ashmount. I solemnly Returned to my home, alone. My life is in Ruin, that gemheart’s Cultivation effect on my friend’s sense of greed and Dominion led to me being the only Survivor of our quest. I Zinc... I zinc I will type this story on my comPewter as a warning. A warning to not lose sight of your goal of making a punny story and having it get out of hand remarkably quickly and become something so totally weird and unusual that you fell Obligatored to end the story with an apology in the form of a run-on sentence. The End. Edit: Fixed the Melody issue you guys pointed out. I know this story's got far more serious problems than that (it doesn't even have a consistent tense, lol), but I'll leave it be, I think.
  6. Harry Potter covers the whole spectrum, I think. First two movies were excellent, third was still pretty great, fourth took a huge hit in quality to become just tolerable, five was simply awful (terrible adaptation and terrible movie), six was still bad, and seven/eight were good (though impressive for how much they attempt to make up for the previous movies, that's a lot to make up for). I still get sad when I think of how legitimately awesome the movies were in their fledgling years, only to be rewarded with movies 4-6. Each of those movies had their moments, sure, but overall they were awful adaptations. I expected to be thoroughly disappointed in the Ender's Game movie, and ended up really liking it. Obviously the movie doesn't compare to the depth of the book, but I was impressed overall by how much they actually managed to capture. I still think my enjoyment of the movie was very much impacted by my insanely low expectations prior to watching, but I'm fine with that. However, I will always believe that making Anderson female was a storming pointless change.
  7. Vin walks into a bar and orders and Allomantic Cocktail. She tosses the bartender a bag of coins, saying “Thanks for the refuel.” The bartender nods and replies “Thanks for the ammo.”
  8. And now for the most important question in the Cosmere: What would actually happen if you ate an Awakened hemalurgic cookie? Especially if it had a weird command like 'survive' or 'spike' or 'be delicious'?
  9. I can definitely see how the question of 'at which point is an object considered destroyed' would be a topic for debate. Do you have a link to where I could read some thoughts/enter the discussion? I think another way of looking at the question might be "What constitutes an object that can be invested with breath?" What is the smallest physical structure that can be invested? If we knew that, I believe the answer to my original question would follow naturally. As for Nightblood, I was thinking specifically type 3 entities.
  10. I thought you were responding to my original post, and was thoroughly confused for a bit. Still relevant questions: If an awakened object gets destroyed, where does the breath go? Is it just lost? If, for argument's sake, a little straw man was Commanded to 'fetch keys,' and its creator died, would it lose purpose entirely or continue fetching keys whenever the opportunity arose? Doing this until either 'hijacked' by an 8th Heightener or destroyed, leading back to question 1.
  11. I'm sure I've seen some posts related to this before, but I can't find them for the life of me. So a new topic it is. If an awakened object gets destroyed, where does the breath go? Is it just lost? How 'loyal' are Awakened objects to their original creators? For example, Nightblood has sentience and will attempt to follow its Commands regardless of who holds it. If a little straw man was Commanded to 'fetch keys,' and its creator died, would it lose purpose entirely, continue fetching keys whenever the opportunity arose (which would be hilarious), or immediately take orders from a new master? Lifeless commands can be broken while the creator is still alive, does the same process apply to Awakened objects?
  12. Interesting! I will tentatively accept a cookie and may even partake of its alluring ominousness. I actually took one of those usually lame personality tests to determine my bending power. This test was actually pretty well thought out, so I'm confident in my choice not being solely based on which is the most powerful/coolest/etc.
  13. That's a very difficult question... pretty sure any choice I make will be completely arbitrary and subject to change on the slightest whim. But for the sake of answering, I'll go with, um, Way of Kings, I suppose. Current arbitrary reasoning: the book, while great in and of itself, totally feels like the setup for a seriously breathtaking epic (perhaps because that's exactly what it is). Which is ridiculously exciting. I almost took you up on your cookie offer, but then you had to go and offer two. (I'll be honest, I have no idea what shardcookies are/represent. But offering two cookies to a new member is just plain suspicious ) Favorite Zelda? Well, I hate to be cliché, but I have to go with Ocarina of Time (MM3D will be my first MM experience, however, so final judgment is definitely pending). It just epitomizes the franchise in almost every meaningful way. There hasn't been a single game I've disliked, though, which definitely makes the choice tougher. As for Smash fighters, my current main is Link (surprise surprise), but I also really want to 'git gud' (Stormfather I hate that phrase!) with Mega Man, Lucario, Shulk, and Robin. Eventually. I'm an Earthbender for sure. Which has been leveled up drastically recently with the addition of advanced metalbending and freaking lavabending. Can't say I'm displeased in the slightest with these new developments. Favorite characters... well I'm really liking Sazed so far (1/2 done with Well of Ascension). I love his intense curiosity and sense of duty/friendship conflicting with the seemingly reasonable expectations of his people. Also really liking Vin's and OreSeur's dynamic. Maybe these opinions are just because I'm reading Mistborn books atm, but who knows? (Also, Lightsong is an obvious copout that I will refrain from using.) How about you?
  14. So I was introduced to Brandon Sanderson a couple weeks ago somehow by tvtropes.org (something to do with lightning-paced endings and Branderson being a master at them... just looked it up, Gambit Pileup was the trope), which was already my favorite website and now has been firmly cemented in place forever. So I've been bingeing whenever possible. Started with Warbreaker because, well, it's free on his website. Somehow I was lucky enough to discover him while Way of Kings was free, so I grabbed that and read it shortly after. Now in possession of the original Mistborn trilogy, an addiction to Writing Excuses, and a firm idea for a Christmas wishlist. Decided I might as well make my obsession official and create an account over here, though the depth some of you theorize to is admittedly somewhat intimidating. Perhaps I'll be inspired by my username (created by an attempt to simulate an Intent) and come up with a unique idea every once in a while. Still have quite a few books to read, thankfully, and while I'm anxious to get 'caught up' with the rest of the fandom, I'm worried that I'll run out of stories far too quickly. The Final Empire took me two days, and I definitely thought it would last longer (especially with college to worry about). I guess Writing Excuses will soothe withdrawal for a while Non shard stuffs... I like Nintendo, as you may have inferred from the title. Mega-hyped for the recently announced MM3D, as I've wanted it for a while now. TV... I like Avatar:TLA and Chuck. And by like, I mean those are masterpieces and are my favorite shows ever. Nothing will dethrone them; I may add to that list in the future, but removal would be unthinkable. Music, my power trio is The Killers, Keane, and Snow Patrol. Sport to play is soccer. And I'll stop there. Anyways, nice to meet you all, and have an excellent, um, time, day, night, week, whatever.
