I've seen it.
Turns out, it's not Steampunk after all.

The critics are trashing it, but I actually enjoyed it. It's by no means a good movie, but it's very entertaining. Then again, I only watched this because of Logan Lerman and Matthew Macfadyen, so it's easy to be entertained.

But seriously, I had fun. And Paul W.S. Anderson made a campy and cheesy take on a classic and he ran away with it; I can respect that.

Lance Reddick (Broyles on "Fringe") might make for an interesting Sazed.

Ooh! Fun lines are the stuff of my Goodreads reading status updates.

"No, no assassins yet. I guess I've already got too much chull sass of my own." -Wit, WoK p.326 UK ed.
"You're so conservative that even your socks are more traditional than the rest of us." -This one's from Elantris, but I forgot to note who said it, and what page number.
"I hope you Free Kingdomers aren't too put out to discover that dragons didn't come and bow to me at my birth. I wasn't tutored by the spirits of my dead Smedry ancestors, nor did I kill my first Librarian by slitting his throat with his own Library Card." -from Alcatraz Versus The Evil Librarians
"Now I've already spoken about foreshadowing (a meddling literary convention of which Heisenberg would uncertainly be proud.)" -Also from Alcatraz #1
"You see, that is the sad, terrible, sorry thing about sarcasm. It's really funny." -Again, from Alcatraz #1
“War is far worse. At least where politics is going on, there are
usually nice hors d’oeuvres.” -Warbreaker

Re: The Hunger Games (Silus/Ryan)
Yeah, Catching Fire was a waste. She didn't really have to put them back into the Arena for another rehash. I think she could've thought of something else to make the War "catch fire".
As for the end of Mockingjay, I thought it was appropriately poignant. It wasn't entirely happy; I don't think Katniss will ever be as (reasonably) happy as she was before she became a Tribute. But I concede that this will really come down to personal preference.
I never was a Gale fan, even from the start.

And if people haven't read the books, they will predict that Marsh will die because he's played by Sean Bean.

But hey, David Wenham! Unconventional choice for Kelsier, but it can actually work. Hrmmm...
There's also Kevin McKidd. He appears in Grey's Anatomy. I don't watch that, but I've seen him in some movies. He might also work as Kelsier.

@Silus: Like I said, the first book is the strongest book.

Hi, Ryan! Welcome to the Forums.
You're lucky to be attending the Alloy of Law signing. I'm still wishing Brandon will fly to somewhere near my country. At least somewhere in Asia that's easy to travel to.

Take it easy on the Brandon books! Next thing you know, you'll be plowing through Wheel of Time. (Not that that's a bad thing.

I was expecting that Warbreaker would have the best cover in the UK style, but... ummm...

I kinda see Hermione now, Chaos.

And here I was wishing it'll be good so I can get one so all my books will match. Oh well. *shrug* I think I'll stick to looking for the UK Elantris.

Hah I felt the exact same way! After being stuck with the never ending WoT series starting one that large and with so many books planned is daunting! It's totally worth the read though!
I've gotten over the awe and intimidation that The Way of Kings inspired, and I'm now about 275 pages in. Loving it so far, though I'm taking it slow because I want to make sure I understand all the details there.
It'll be a while before I can get over being intimidated by Wheel of Time, though. Maybe after WoK?

I'm still reading fanfiction. Currently on Bishonen Senshi Sailor Moon, in which guys in the Ranma cast become Sailor Senshi (Usagi etc. don't exist). It's pretty funny. And last week I got to the current chapter of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (longer than Way of Kings), which I highly recommend.
I've heard that there are indeed some pretty good Sailor Moon fanfics out there, but I only personally read Harry Potter ones, and I'm actually looking for a good long one right now. I haven't heard of Methods of Rationality yet, but I'll look it up. Thanks for mentioning it.

I finished Catching Fire last week, definitely weaker than The Hunger Games, the plot felt kind of lost. I've read the first couple of chapters of Mockingjay, and am very unsure as to whether I'll enjoy it. Katniss's attitude is bugging the crap out of me.
I still think the first book is the strongest in the series.
Katniss is not very agreeable for most of Mockingjay, actually. It's just fun seeing Collins up the ante in the last book. I'm curious to find out if you'll like Peeta's characterization in Mockingjay, Silus.

Ben Barnes actually ages down easily enough if need be. Good choice!
Also, Jamie Bell for Spook... I like that idea! Eddie Redmayne may do well, too, especially as the character gains a bit more gravity come The Hero of Ages.

I'm catching up on Episode 2 of the latest season of FRINGE right now.

I have the Mistborn Trilogy and The Way of Kings in this UK edition. However, my Elantris is the US cover. I think I may go looking for this edition because I can be a little O.C. with my book collection.

I admit I do like the art for the US editions, but these have a minimalist appeal.

Ooh, it stars John Cusack! Sounds interesting. There's a movie still of Cusack as Poe HERE (USA Today).
So we have Sherlock, then a Perry Mason also with Robert Downey, and now a sleuthing Poe.
Maybe Hollywood has finally gotten tired of fairy tales?

I know at some libraries parents can block their children's accounts from checking out certain books. Obviously if the child is determined to read the book this is won't stop them from getting a hold of it some other way, but IMO it is a much better solution then making these books inaccessible to the rest of the general public.
I don't live in the U.S., by the way, so I'm not very familiar with library guidelines, but that sounds like a good safeguard, at least, especially for very young children.

Alliare and Sigyn: Parents should definitely take a more active role to at least try to know what kind of books their kids are reading. And that's why they keep challenging the libraries, I think, because kids have free access to books there without the parents knowing what they're reading during library time.
But I agree, Sigyn, the better choice is to prepare the children. I interviewed YA author Lauren Kate recently, and she told me she's glad that she's seeing an encouraging trend among her readership of parents reading her books together with their teens. Her books are paranormal fantasy, and they likely wouldn't make the ALA list or anything, but those readers make a good example. Challenging or banning a book will just make kids go to great lengths to seek out those forbidden books; parents can make the best of it by reading the books and using them to talk to their kids and make them understand the issues discussed in those books.

It looks huge (and is technically), but like I said, the pacing is such that it goes SO quickly.

I got through the Prologue, and you're right! I had to read this a little slower to make sure I absorb the details of the magic system at work, but the prose is not clunky at all.

They have a list of Frequently Banned/Challenged Books per decade on the site, which would give us an idea of which books became controversial at certain periods of time. In the last decade, Harry Potter topped the list.
The challenge/banning is usually because of reasons like depictions of sex, self-harm, drug use and abuse, racism, and other similar issues. Usually it's parents or advocacy/religious groups who issue the challenge, though not all challenges result in a ban.
There's still an inherent problem about the appropriateness of a book for a certain age level, I think. Some people would say Harry Potter shouldn't be classified as a children's book, and some people would say children can handle it. The classification by publishers and libraries aren't necessarily what parents think is appropriate for their children. So it's at that point that the challenges come in.

Intimidating IS the right word!

The page count is 1007 for the edition that I have. I just stared at it yesterday and wondered if I'm ever going to get through it, and decided to postpone starting it. I'll start tonight. I just realized I got through the 3 Mistborn books, and those are 800+ pages each, so I can do this!
Boy, this book is gonna make for a great weapon if someone wanted to mess with me while I'm reading. I must remember NOT to drop it on my own foot.

I finished The Hunger Games today. I like it a lot, the ending felt weak, though. There's a chunk just before the climax where they let all the tension out, and it shows. The ending would have been awesome if they had kept that tension up. Good thing I have 2 and 3 on hand!
Cool! You're right about the ending. I'm not sure if it can be attributed to Suzanne Collins' scriptwriting background. But I'm glad you have the next 2 on hand.

I've finally found a copy of The Way of Kings, and I'm about to start. I was about to start yesterday, but I just stared at it and got a little bit scared.

With a name like Cowboys and Aliens, I'd be sort of surprised if anyone thought it could be taken seriously.
Well, it was originally a comic book series, so...

As for the character banners, I love the costumes, but holy whoa. Is it just me or do those look almost freakishly photoshopped?
Orlando Bloom's hair scares me. His hair will scare off even Elvis' hair.

Personally, I was thinking Kelsier's Crew, not a bridge crew. >_>
Yeah, actually, I was thinking Kelsier's Crew when I chose the title.
But, guess what! I FINALLY found a copy of WoK (UK edition to match my Mistborn copies). So I'm going to watch out for that Crew thingy, Kaladin.

All this talk of Ellen Page and Summer Glau for Vin makes me sad
They get suggested for every film like this. (And firefly was fantastic but that doesn't mean that Summer Glau is perfect for every role)I get why people think Summer Glau would be good as Vin. She'll really look good in all the stunt work. However, I'd like for the producers to make more of an effort to look for another actress.
And Zachary Quinto as Marsh. He would look awesome as an Inquisitor, and would be great at portraying Marsh's mental struggles in the third book (assuming they make movies of those too).
Sylar with spikes! Awesome.
But actually McAvoy is the best choice for Elend I've seen yet in this thread.
And for Zane perhaps Ian Somerhalder. Get rid of his trash stash and he looks like the insane son of a corrupted nobleman. I think he could play the part really well, even though I'm not really a fan of Vampire Diaries he's a pretty good actor given the material he's working with.
Guys, no more Ellen Page. You're killing me, here. Her voice is annoying. Her acting is annoying. She looks like cherub. Just no.
McAvoy is an interesting choice. He can certainly project Elend's earnestness and intelligence. But his suitability would depend on who is cast as Vin, I think.
Somerhalder is great in The Vampire Diaries. I think he can pull off Zane's controlled insanity well enough. Or you can try Joseph Morgan, who currently plays Klaus on the same show. (Although... okay, Morgan might be a little too bad-chull.)
Ellen Page. Arrrrgh. Good enough actress, but she's just not Vin to me.

Welcome, Brad! I'm kinda new here myself, and I definitely haven't heard of the Cosmere until KChan mentioned it and I went wandering around the Coppermind Wiki.
Hope you enjoy being here. Everyone's been fun and funny!

Might as well start the series. "The Eye of the World" has been sitting on my To Read pile for a while now. It'll be fun reading it along with everyone here. I just hope I can keep up.
