Shallan was that part of the book where I said to myself; this is going to be special. Let me point out ahead of time that I've read books where there were artists and other creative types illustrated in various demeanor (usually some breath-taken dandy and ripe with frills), but this was different. She was actually capable. Capable and believable.

I drew her with the axehound Scrak as a concept that it was given to Shallan as a gift from her brother Balat. Maybe Scrak came from a new batch of hounds he'd bred earlier in the year. She'd eventually have to go off to leave her behind, but I like to image what happened in the before, aside from the foreshadowed dark stuff that is.
