I really do think the deserters are good people, and it’s not just Shallan’s lightweaving that led to them doing the right thing (and tagging along with her like a pack of trained dogs) it did help tho.

I think it’s cool that the last time we see Gaz in Way of Kings he’s a slimy coward and the first time we see him in Words of Radiance he basically leads a heroic charge. He just needed a lil push in the right direction.
