This took me a while to think of... Rumpelstiltskin, maybe? I do enjoy the part of the story with the atomic conversion of organic matter into gold, and the rules he agrees to are as ridiculous as his name.

Mmmmm it is from a short story I have bouncing around in my head. I tease it in fellowship of the thing, and I hope to actually write it one day.
