Ok, I know it is an ongoing joke that Reckoners isn't cosmere and that lots of people new to the fandom are making the mistake (I did so myself). I walked into all of this thinking most of Brandon's books were Cosmere and was told: "nope you're wrong".

This kind of threw me off because I seriously thought that this was all connected. So I decided to do some research on the Coppermind, update myself on Investiture, Adonalism, shards, etc.

AND I FOUND SOMETHING VERY INTERESTING. I BELIEVE RECKONERS COULD ACTUALLY BE COSMERE GUYS!!!

There are sixteen shards (some think 17) and there are ten known shards. Upon actually pondering them I realized that many have opposites (i.e. Ruin vs Preservation, Honor vs Odium, Ambition vs Devotion) even just the definition of the words are opposing. So, upon this realization, I thought back to Calamity.

In Calamity, when David is taken up to meet Calamity (who is someone else, yadda yadda yadda (Larcener)) Calamity tells him: "You refuse to see what your people are, once they get a little power," (Calamity,  Sanderson 399). This shows that he sees them (at least to me) as somewhat easily controlled. He also calls this, "A terrible place," (Calamity, Sanderson 398) <= one example.

Then, later, Calamity says: "I contain every power of the universe. Do you understand? They are all mine. I am what you call a High Epic a thousand times over," (Calamity, Sanderson 402).

Calamity (or Larcener) sees himself very highly, sees nothing wrong with what he does (similar to Ruin and Odium). He sees himself as a god, and according to the Coppermind: "Adonalsium is generally regarded as a God, responsible for the creation of the Cosmere,[2][5] and it is sometimes referred to as the "power of creation."

So if the shards do have opposites, Larcener could be the vessel of a shard. Something that has to do with Heteronomy or Subjection--which are the opposites of Autonomy. Autonomy wanting freedom, Subjection wanting control.

IN THIS WAY RECKONERS COULD BE COSMERE.

There are things that Brandon likes and powers of creation/destruction are among them. He builds them into his works frequently, which only means that it's Brandon and not necessarily that it's Cosmere. Reckoners will never be Cosmere and it's good that way.

Well, that is why it is a theory.

But a theory isn't wrong until it is proven wrong, neither is it right.

It is just a theory: ;)

A lot of theories reside in this fandom.

Also, a fork as tines, not teeth.

There are a lot of theories in this fandom that haven't been proven wrong, but Reckoners being Cosmere is not one of them. Whether that's a good thing or not is, of course, a matter of opinion, but Brandon has repeatedly stated that there is a distinct line between Cosmere and Reckoners. There's a lot of WOB quotes about it when you search the Arcanum.

Although it's worth mentioning that the Reckoners multiverse is shaping up to become a little Cosmere-like thing on its own (but with way less restrictions since the rules are way more loose). His novella Snapshot takes place in one of the Core Possibilities:

Does Snapshot take place on the Reckoners' Earth, or one of the other Core Possibilities? (Based on the reading you did I would assume the latter, but it doesn't hurt to get confirmation on that).

Brandon Sanderson

It's one of the Other Core Possibilities.

The idea of going meta-series with Reckoners is to offer me the chance to play with quantum possibilities and alternate dimensions, which is something to cosmere's not set up to do. We'll see how big this one gets, but I'm fond of silver age comics, and the idea of alternate realities they explored. (Often in goofy ways because...well, silver age.) This also gives me a realm to do some magic, like the Epic powers, that I can hand-wave a little more, rather than confining everything to the structure of the cosmere.

... and The Apocalypse Guard series he's been working on (and delaying) will also be set in the same multiverse.

It actually doesn’t anymore.

Brandon made the decision to remove it after the film rights for both universes were bought by different companies.

Oversleep

Also, you mentioned Snapshotto be set in one of the Core Realities in State of Sanderson 2016 but now that I look at it there is no mention of it? Was it taken out for some reason?

Brandon Sanderson

Snapshotcan't be in the Reckonersuniverse right now, as the film rights are with different companies.

Ah, I missed that! Interesting. You'd think it wouldn't be much of a deal to have two stories set in the same multiverse no matter where the film rights are. Then again, he wrote "right now" like there's still a possiblity of it being put back sometime. Thanks for the information anyway!

Questioner

Is Calamity a Shard?

Brandon Sanderson

Calamity is not, good question. I decided I would not put that in the cosmere, because there's certain rules in the cosmere it's breaking.

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

Does Calamity have any relations to Shards, at all?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

No. People see relationships, that's 'cause, it's just my writing style does tend to follow similar themes. I did not imagine Calamity as a Shard.

Idaho Falls signing (Dec. 29, 2018)

But, if he were to be a Shard, here's what his intent might have been:

Questioner

If Calamity were a Shard in the Cosmere, what intent would he be?

Brandon Sanderson

Oh boy... Oh boy. Have you read this book?

Questioner

I have not read Calamity yet?

Brandon Sanderson

I don't want to spoil it. Um... *pause* Yeah, I don't really want to spoil it. But it's kind of-- it's like "Vindictiveness" would probably be a good match. This-- Or "Judgement". Maybe Judgement. Calamity's got this impression that people will destroy themselves if he lets them. Does that make sense?

Questioner

Yeah.

Brandon Sanderson

So it's not either one of those, but it's something close to that.

Calamity release party (Feb. 16, 2016)

Also, @That_One_Fangirl you should probably mark the Calamity spoilers.

Also, not all Shards have opposites:

Shardbound [PENDING REVIEW]

Do all Shards have a direct paired opposite intent...

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

No, I would say no, they do not all have a directly paired opposite intent.
