starweaver
I just finished Elantris a couple of days ago and I was really bothered by how the story treats Eshen. Throughout the first half of the book, I was so sure that she was going to turn out to be more than she appeared -- after all, Sarene had arrogantly dismissed her despite her own "play dumb" act. I even thought she might turn out to be the main villain. When Iadon dies, she totally disappears -- despite her kindness and hospitality, Sarene shows absolutely no concern as to what will happen to the queen now, and we don't even see her reaction to her husband's death. Then, in the end, she dies fighting for Arelon, but her name isn't even mentioned as being buried alongside Karata, Saolin and the others who gave their lives! She may only be Raoden's stepmother, but it seems uncharacteristic for him to not show even the slightest bit of gratitude. Was anyone else bothered by this?
The Forgetful Archivist he/him
Spoiler Eshen disappears because she dies a heroic death at the hands of the Fjordell soldiers.
