Turtleboi Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 Hi all! I'm just recently discovered the cosmere, and I don't know which book yo read next. I have read the three stormilight novels. The first mistborne trilogy and warbreaker. I was thinkiing of going with Aracanum Unbound, but I haven't read Elantris yet. Any suggestion? 5
MacThorstenson he/him Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 Welcome to the 17th shard! To Answer your question, I would read Elantris first, then Arcanum unbound (AU), then the second mistborn trilogy. The reason is that Arcanum unbound is a collection of short stories, some of which have spoilers for some of Brandon's published novels. To avoid having to skip that short story and return to it later, I would suggest reading Elantris first. Between the AU and the second mistborn trilogy, I would say reading AU first is better. The AU has a lot of information about the cosmere and realmatics. Both of which I find really cool. However, you will not be missing anything by reading the second mistborn trilogy before the AU. Again welcome to the shard, have a cookie and a upvote as a welcoming gift!
Turtleboi Posted January 26, 2018 Author Posted January 26, 2018 Thank you! I was thinking that Elantris would be the way to go. I listen to them on audible at work, otherwise I would have no time, and I just needed a push in that direction. It's so hard to keep up with a lot of the cosmere references in the books. I actualy finished Way of Kings and Words of Radiance before i realized that they were connected to the others through the Cosmere. Thank the Stormfather for the coppermind! 2

Except that Mistborn: Secret History is in AU and I'm pretty sure Brandon said that Secret History is meant to be read after Alloy of Law, although he would prefer if you waited until after Bands of Mourning. (As well as Allomancer Jak which is also set in Era Two) As for the short story set on Sel, it does not contain any Elantris spoilers to my knowledge, so spoilerwise you should be fine there either way. Yeah so my recommendation would be to read both Elantris and Era Two first before reading Arcanum Unbounded, so that you can have a better understand and don't have to be worried at all about spoilers. But that's just my opinion. Also, welcome! 1

I didn't know that Brandon thought that that Secret History was meant to be read after Alloy of Law. I don't recall any spoilers in Allomancer Jak or Mistborn: Secret History for Mistborn era two, though I may be wrong about Mistborn: Secret History

Probably not spoilers, but I feel you would enjoy both a lot more if you understood the context of Allomancer Jak and read Era Two before Secret History. 1
Turtleboi Posted January 27, 2018 Author Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) Ok don't hang me for this, but who is allomancer jak? Edited January 27, 2018 by Turtleboi 2
MacThorstenson he/him Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 here is a quote from the coppermind about the short story that we are talking about: "Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania is a short story about an adventuring Allomancer as told by him and edited by his Terrisman steward, Handerwym. Handerwym's annotations imply that the narrator is unreliable (prone to exaggeration and ignorance)," He doesn't appear in mist born era's one or two in any of the main books. here is a link to the coppermind page about the story. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Allomancer_Jak_and_the_Pits_of_Eltania

I know of no source for that claim. I do know that Brandon said you can read Secret History after Hero of Ages if you don't care about Second Era, but if you do, you should read it after Bands of Mourning. @Turtleboi Arcanum Unbound is a collection of short stories, and there is one that is meant to be read after Elantris, one that is accompanying Second Era (Allomancer Jak) and one that is meant to be read after Bands of Mourning (Secret History). The rest of them you're good to read. If I were you, I'd go read Elantris now, then Second Mistborn Era and then AU.

I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere though
Turtleboi Posted January 27, 2018 Author Posted January 27, 2018 Already on it. I downloaded Elantris to my audible last night. Once im done with it i will probably hit second era Mistborne. Is second era as good as the original trilogy? I noticed the first book is pretty short. 1

However, some people - including me - believe that Second Era is better than the First.
Turtleboi Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 Finished Elantris and I'm about half way through alloy of law. I am in love with Wax and Wayne. Thank you guys for suggesting I read this series. I'm already thinking of cosplay ideas for halloween 2
