I will try to answer without going into the Spoiler Side of the Force.

Of course the first and more honest answer is "we don't know". Much more, the ones you cited in the answer did not. Some Magic Users did it, but they were not the magic users we have currently in the story...It's speculation what magic they could use. By the way, the place you mention is still there mostly, and there are still people living there. Sure they are few and live in small abitable areas but the place isn't really gone
