If that's not the explanation, then it could always be because he wasn't holding enough Voidlight to heal from Shardbow arrow strikes. Seemed like it slowed the transition down as his new limbs and crystal protrusions had to break through the Plate. He couldn't surgebind the ground until his feet were bare. Perhaps without Plate, the transformation is faster and we see the true awesome power of Yelig-Nar.
