JPark317 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 On the back cover of Oathbringer, it says: Quote And finally The King, broken by war, he seeks the past. That which was abandoned. That which he must not learn. For those secrets will crush him as they did the Knights who came before. As far as I am aware, it is believed that the King is referring to Dalinar. This brings up "that which he must not learn," which "crush[ed]... the Knights who came before." To me, this is clearly referring to whatever information or occurrence caused the Recereance. I was just curious how people think Dalinar will obtain this information. My thoughts: Based on the preview chapters this week, if the library discovered by Shallan and co. can be restored, there may be something there; He may get it out of the Stormfather as the book progresses; Maybe when Jasnah reappears, she will have some information regarding it; or, my personal favorite: Taravangian tells him to attempt to sabotage his unification efforts/the fledgeling Radiants. I'm most partial to the idea of Taravangian telling him because, to me, it seems that Taravangian has been testing Dalinar since he arrived at Urithiru, asking about the path he will take for unification and having discussions concerning morality and the like. In Words of Radiance, one of the epigraphs containing information found in the Diagram stated that Taravangian must hold the secret that broke the Knights before, to use if the re-founded Radiants pose a threat to his plans/schemes (paraphrasing because I don't have my book handy). This is obviously dependent upon Taravangian actually knowing the secret, IIRC the epigraph did not explicitly state that Taravangian already knew the secret. It could be something that Taravangian, or one of his cohorts, is searching for in Urithiru/elsewhere. Regardless, I think Taravangian telling him would be the most exciting way for Dalinar to obtain the information. Other thoughts? 1
Wreith he/him Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 My problem is that, so far in the chapters, we haven't seen Dalinar doing much seeking of the past. Sure, that's pretty much all he did in WoR, but he's pretty single mindedly attempting to unify nations in the present. Boring answer I know, but I think he will have learned something tangentially in a discussion with/about Evi that didn't mean anything to him at the time but will now. It will come back to him with his returning memories of her and lead to the Secret's discovery. I like the idea of Mr T sharing the secret, but I don't think it will be properly effective unless you can be convinced that all the current proto radiants will at some point in the near future be gathered to hear it. Obviously Lift has yet to arrive and with the Prime's decision to seal/destroy the oathgate, she might not for some time. As we all know, she can save the world on her own if she has to.
