Passion he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) I'm tired of repeating things other people have said about my favorite characters only to realize I completely disagree. Thought I would out some of my own pet analysis out there. Hope you like it. ADOLIN: he is not one of my favorite characters but I greatly appr. What he adds. Think about it...the other male characters are in a way one dimensional dalinor and kaladin are way to stubborn/broken/lost in their own point of view adolin offsets this bu being just normal. He is good at what he does fighting yet in a way at a disadvantage do to his lack of 'abnormal' abilities. I am most impressed with the way Sanderson wrote him so that on one hand he appears mostly simple and not politically savvy(watch the way he always reacts on instinct and not thought.) Spoiler See also how he barely hanldles sadeas murder when there is a 2nd murder at beginning of oathbringer yet actually looks very smart because he is alwAys helping dalinor out of his wacky viewpoint. He only manages this cuz he is very normal. Hope he does not become radient; want him normal and unbroken just the way he is. SYL: I think Brandon did this perfect their was great potential to make spren to godlike and allknowing. Yet the balance is perfect. Brandon did give them power and mystery yet he gave them just the right amount of mystery. SYL is my favorite example of this. Look at how influenced she is by kaladins viewpoint and opinion of light eyes and adolin and everything. It's brilliantly done Spoiler In new oathbringer chapter worse than her inconsiderate view of adolin is her obnoxious idea for kaladin to use shallan as a mere source of distraction KALADIN: he is my favorite character. I am super impressed how Brandon wrote such a stubborn man and one dimensional outlook and yet made him so multifaceted. I love it when he is so driven by his light eyes hatred, so singleminded in focus and then does something that has depth and character without even acknowledging it for its sophistication. Brandon makes it feel in character and just right i actually have a lot more to say but as this post is long enough I'll end with this thought. Reading the oathbringer chapters as they r released three at Atime has changed my reading experience just making me savor each little bit. It has made me realize how so much really happens in so little bit of plot development it's awesome and unreal go Brandon Edited September 20, 2017 by Passion Spoilers
Khyrindor he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I think this is a great post, but please remove any Oathbringer spoilers, as this isn't in the Oathbringer spoiler board. I've already read the chapters, but I know others haven't and would be quite upset if they do. 1
Toaster Retribution he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 If you want to keep the spoilers, you could also write "Oathbringer spoilers" above the spoiler tags. That way, people will know what they are entering into. I agree with you on all three being good characters. Personally, I want to see Adolin being a Radiant, even if I'm not so strongly for or against as others are. I also don't like Syl. I realize that she is a well-written character, but she is just unlikeable to me. She loves to pick on Kaladin for his faults, but rarely acknowledges her own. And she mostly gets away with it too! She feels like a spoilt child sometimes, and is unecessary biased against people.
Passion he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) Love to hear other people's takes but...everything you criticize about SYL is what actually makes her great. Just saying Edited September 20, 2017 by Passion Spelling
Toaster Retribution he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Just now, Passion said: Love to hear other people's tales but...everything you criticize about SYL is what actually makes her great. Just saying Haha. We look for different things in characters, apparently :-)
Passion he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) Just to continue with some other characters Least favorite character: (I gave enough praise this doesn't count as bashing. Also every book has one Jasna definitely. she is slightly one dimensional but to be fair it's probably cuz she just hasn't got enough screen time but still she wasn't very likeable and I I feel all we know know about her is she is an atheist till he personifies her a little bit it won't get better. I think it's very telling my two favorite jasna scenes are the orolougue and end scene with wit. They both have the something in common 1 shallon isn't there to idolize her 2 she looks vulnerable. All this being said there is plenty of room for my opinion to change in. Coming books. I've got faith Brandon! Character I wish for bigger role: I gotta pick Navani. She seems cool composed and a player yet she hasn't played a major role in anything yet and we don't know her motivation for anything (we don't know why she picked gavilar then and come to think of it we don't know exactly what appeals to her about dalinor now. We don't really know what she thinks of elhokar her own bungling son- sadly all we get that's concrete is she does clearly mourn Jasna.) my main hope is we finally get some thing from dalinors flashbacks Main don't: don't make elhoker a radient. Don't make him a hero. Though to be fair he doesn't need to end up a complete bungler. Let him just end up normal, not talented enough to really accomplish but enough sometimes success to be almost like us typical folk An almost 0athbringer spoiler Spoiler Or all those who thought elhokar would become a protagonist...Nash being weak means being to weak to oppose as well... he needed to be given strength to move forward and this way works just as well and in addition allows him to falter and relapse back to being weak - please Brandon don't make the mistake of changing elhokar to quickly Edited September 20, 2017 by Passion
