Glaring at the Survivor he/him
The theory I have here isn't too backed up, but I have a feeling I'm at least close. And the next feeling I get is that it's horrible. Anyway, I think that the reason Shardblades and Shardplate glow has something to do with spren. So far, the only people we've seen with glowing shardblade are/were the Knights Radiant, and as soon as they left their Plates and Blades, they lost their glow. And they also were no longer "owned" by the Knights, whom we know had Spren due to their Surgebinding capabilities. My guess is, if a Surgebinder holds a Blade and/or is wearing a set of Plate, it will glow again. So if Kaladin does end up with a Shardblade, it'll glow. I hope.
Benjibooboo
I think shard plates glow when someone inside them has the ability to suck in stormlight. The plate itself acts as a container and catalyst. Where the human body is poress and leaks the light, the plate fully contains it and converts the stormlight in to energy more effectively.
Glaring at the Survivor he/him
Thats certainly a possibility. +1! More likely than my idea, heh...
.S.A.M.K.M
Surgebinders are dependant on stormlight, so I wonder if plate is able to store excess stormlight, that is the reason why they dont disappear, they need a surgebinder to dismiss them. It stands to reason, if their abilities are dependant on it, they would have a means to store it.

Syl is happy when Dalinar gives up his blade, and it appears that her happiness isn't because Dalinar used the blade to free Sadeas's bridgemen. Duskshard he/him
I think shard plates glow when someone inside them has the ability to suck in stormlight. I'm of the same opinion about how Shardplate works. I posted about it in another thread, can't remember which one. I think that it acts like an impervious skin that stormlight can't escape from giving the KR perfect containment like voidbringers are said to have. I also think once Surgebinders say all the ideals that they give of stormlight in a colour unique to their order and that's what makes KR's plate glow different colours for different orders. Or it could be that some orders are paired or grouped in some way and those orders give off the same coloured glow.
IllNsickly he/him
I have trouble with the idea of spren being contained in the shards. Its like my 'b' string being slightly out of tune. It just doesnt feel or sound quite right.. I am in the camp of "Spren help create shards once the Ideals have been spoken". The other way 'round seems too parasitic to me. I like the more symbiotic answer, myself. Edit: Spelling..
