+Wax he/him Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 (edited) Going through partial re reads + in one scene when Lift felt a lot of hate suddenly for Nale. I am guessing that thing which brings the hate level up was travelling through the city. + BS spent a lot of text in the climax on the emotionless/bringing Nale out of a stupor scene (from emotionless to crying). It makes me think there is a separate sub plot involving heralds' corruption. + BS also noted in the postscript that he converted Lift's joke about thinking she is not growing for three years as a foreshadowing of the bit she explains about visiting the nightwatcher. Perhaps we can review on the so called jokes snd figure out the foreshadowing bits? Edited January 13, 2017 by axcellence
Andy92 Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 That postscript confused me a little bit. Is Lift actually not aging because that's what she asked the Nightwatcher for? Or does she simply think she's not aging because kids think growing up takes forever?

It's pretty clear from the story that she actually is aging, but thinks that she shouldn't be. We don't really know why.
Andy92 Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 (edited) I was under the impression she thought she wasn't aging because she asked the Nightwatcher for everything to stay the same. So she thinks her age isn't changing. I think it's all in her head though, but I'm curious to see how her character progresses in future books. Edited January 17, 2017 by Andy92
+Wax he/him Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Still going through random re reads On fighting with the town guards, the guard tower captain finds that once Lift's gone, the only evidence he has got left is black sand that withers away. Just the word black sand is interesting, as I keep thinking of the black spheres. Or is it iust Wyndle's crystals coming to dust Also, there are names of some new towns in there... including a place that has been at war for " a billion years" in Lift's words. I wonder if it is a different name for the shattered plains or a different place entirely?

I thought it was foreshadowing that the guard was a surgebinder using division accidentally. I assumed that she was a proto-Skybreaker from the scene where she immediately calls out the smuggler and later when Nalan is suspicious about the spheres in her room. They're still mainly in the Cognitive Realm but are slightly visible from the physical, depending on how connected someone is to Shadesmar and how strongly they are manifesting. Considering the nearly total memory loss of Syl and Pattern and the partial memory loss of Wyndle despite preparations, I think spren who are going to bond are pushed from the Cognitive Realm to the Physical Realm and suffer some kind of trauma. A slight manifestation in the PR while staying mostly in the CR sounds more like Shallan watching into Shadesmar (just the other way around) which is the careful approach of transitioning. A quote from WoR (p.704) Quote "I... I'm not sure. Mistress, the transition to your side was difficult and left holes in my memory, even with the precautions my people took. I..." On the other hand it could be that the Nahel bond makes transitioning between realms easier for spren, so they don't get traumatized each time when they coalesce as shardblade, -spear or -fork in the PR. So partial transitition without Nahel bond = trauma and total transition (temporarily) with Nahel bond = no trauma. The Parshendi affinity to Shadesmar might make the transition from the CR to the PR and the bonding of voidspren really easy. Put into the bowl the assumption that a highstorm is a moving perpendicularity (not necessary but making the mechanism even easier), or something similar, the upcoming of a desolation consists of the jump of voidspren from Braize to Roshar (in the CR) followed by the bonding with Parshendi in a highstorm to transition (partially) to the PR. And to bring the argument back to where it started: For this mechanism to work, the appearance of KR on Roshar has absolutely no significance, so Ishar's and Nalan's argumentations are lies / denials of unwelcome truths.
