Tabs interfering with backtracking

The news/forums/shardcast/gallery/chat/wiki/links tabs all have this spot just below the icon where, without having the mouse over the tabs themselves, they can be clicked. This is irritating, say, when you want to go to a broader forum area from a topic, as these spots override the link back to that forum. Is there any way to fix this? I keep accidentally going to Shardcast or the Gallery when trying to get to a forum.

It's an issue I'm aware of but don't quite know how to fix. Try and avoid the icons. 

Sorry  I thought I had a potential fix a while back but it did not really work.
