Arook he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 So the first epigraph of way of kings "The love of men is a frigid thing, a mountain stream only three steps from the ice. We are his. Oh Stormfather…we are his. It is but a thousand days, and the Everstorm comes.” Collected on the first day of the week Palah of the month Shash of the year 1171, thirty-one seconds before death. Subject was a darkeyed pregnant woman of middle years. The child did not survive. Does any one know how many days are in a standard Roshar year and anyone know what all the months are as well as there order? The reason I bring this up the journal entry in Navani's journal is dated 1174. 3x365 is 1095 so I'm guessing I'm thinking that her journal is from after the Everstorm arrived. my understanding is that a Roshar year is less then an earth year. Let me know what you think.
bartbug he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I don't know how long Roshar year is compared to an earth year. All that I do know is that they must be pretty close, just so that it doesn't break the average reader's brains. Like, if it was half an earth year, then Kaladin would essentially be a really buff ten year old. (This could be true, since Rosharan humans are genetically different then us humans. It would be really weird, though ). Contrarily, if it was significantly longer, than Dalinar would be an incredibly feeble character without his shardplate, and his personal identity would be incredibly different. I am inclined to believe that they are the same.

Second, I'm having trouble seeing how those are related? Like why does the difference in those dates mean she is writing from after the Everstorm? She may be, but I'm pretty sure those Deathchant quotes are independent of the story's actual timeline related to that chapter.
WeiryWriter he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Rosharan years are roughly 1.1 Earth years, and consist of 500 days. I don't think the months have "names" they are just numbered, i.e. Shash is the sixth month. There is a little about how the calender works on the Roshar article of the coppermind. And the numbers can be found in the Ars Arcanum or here.
cem he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An26dy4dXmx6dENqU2ZpUUZUTk5vUm1fMFBUZ3Z5ZUE&usp=sharing I did this a while back, if anyone's interested. It's probably accurate for the most part, but there may be errors too. I didn't check it for mistakes much. 2
Arook he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Do we have verification that each month has 10 weeks? If they do each have 10 weeks then we are looking at 19.27 hour days If they are 24 hour days we are looking at 407 day years Edited January 22, 2014 by Arook
