Irkutsk he/him Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Has anyone heard of this book? Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Shadowborn-Joseph-DeVeau-ebook/dp/B00XS7CSV6 It's called "Shadowborn" and it was published last year. I haven't read it and don't plan to, but my sister noticed it because it appears to bear some strong similarities to a certain book we all know and love... Here's the description, from Amazon: "Shadowborn is the tale of Aeryn, a street girl poised on the knife's edge of death, whose innate ability to Drift and meld with the shadows draws the attention of a powerful Lord who seeks to use her to bring down a thousand year old god. Relying time and again on her wolfish pet Jynx and her ability to Drift and become a Shadow, Aeryn has been able to eke out a living as a street urchin where countless others have perished. A fateful run-in with a powerful and enigmatic Lord sends her life spiraling out of control. In over her head and leagues from the familiar, meager life she once knew, all Aeryn can do is struggle to ride the currents of a city overflowing with cutthroats, soldiers, scheming nobles, and Nameless, a thousand year old god and his legions of power-hungry Shades and Voices. Trusting in her mantra to "move forward," Aeryn soon finds herself challenging a god and changing the fate of the nation." Street urchin with magic powers? Check. Thousand-year old God with a legion of mysterious followers? Check. Wolfish pet? Double check. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad book or that it's entirely unoriginal, in fact there are already some marked differences in the magic system and plot just from the description. It actually has (a half-dozen or so) good reviews. However, I think it's clear that this writer at least drew some inspiration from Brandon, and I thought I would share this little find with all of you. Thoughts? 2
Yata he/him Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 I am stuck for months with a Story I was build because I used some elements from Mistborn and I feel guilty. Probably I am too hard with myself 1

I am merely inspired by the fact that one man can create such diverse and amazing places, cultures, magics etc etc
Zathoth Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 So who else has a feeling that "Street girl going up against immortal emperor with her newfound magical powers" is the new "Farmboy finds out he is the chosen one and goes on an adventure" or "Orphan goes to a school of magic"? 4
king of nowhere Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 It's difficult to find works that are not inspired by what came before. Brandon was inspired by robert jordan. As for jordan, I'm now reading Dune and I'm surprised by how many similarities there are between the aes sedai and the bene gesserit. the human imagination, after all, melds in different ways what it already knows. 44 minutes ago, Morzathoth said: So who else has a feeling that "Street girl going up against immortal emperor with her newfound magical powers" is the new "Farmboy finds out he is the chosen one and goes on an adventure" or "Orphan goes to a school of magic"? Me! Me!
Alfa he/him Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Bought it and will read it to test it. Will post my thoughts about it here. My first imperessions based on the map: it's set in a maritime city called Maerlinn, set up around a big building called the "Nameless Palace", surrounded by three districts, which seem to be administrative buildings, noble estates and normal people's homes, with slums building the outermost parts of this last part. There are some odd, irregular, semi-hexagonal structures in the sea and land around Maerilin. The nameless palace resembles Kredik Shaw, but I guess most semi-secluded gigantous palace-like structures do that. 3
