I am currently reading "White Sand" and was wondering if it was allowed to discuss it here in the fora. I seem to remember reading that Brandon & Co. did not approve of talking about unpublished works, but I cannot recall where. Is this correct? And if not, where would it be allowed?

Yah, the discussion of unpublished books is indeed a no-go on the forums.  You can discuss it over PM though.

May I ask: where did you get it, when did you ask for it, and when did you receive it?

On his website, there's a sectioin called 'contact brandon'. Just send him an email from there asking for it (and Aether of NIght. That one's not as good, but still fine). Make sure to slather it with flattery, though.

And make sure that you don't do what I did and have an overzealous virus filter knock it out. If you can conclusively prove that you have already received it in a pm to me - maybe by showing a screenshot of the email you got it in - , I formatted an epub version of WS I can get to you for reading convenience. If anyone thinks that this is a morally dodgy idea, please pm me as well and I will cease and desist until I get specific permission from Peter or Brandon

In Brandon's emails that send out unpublished works, it explicitly says to not distribute them. Please respect his wishes.

For those who have read it.  Is it worth reading, or would you reccomend blocking it from your mind and waiting for the more polished version he MAY eventually write?

I'd recommend waiting.

1. The book is notably less polished than any of his published works.

2. Sanderson tends to cannibalize his unpublished work to add characters and settings to his published works. While I don't think anything was replicated outright, some of the characters do feel derivative of some amongst the published books.

3. While the story is self-contained, there are a number of hooks for the rest of the White Sands trilogy. Reading the first book now means that it could be 10-20 years before you get to read the rest of the trilogy.

That said, it is most definitely a 'Sanderson' book, and if none of the above dissuades you, go ahead and ask for it. :)

I believe that there was a State of the Sanderson that said he was definitely planning on rewriting it, just not immediately. Personally, I would say, go for it! It has a self contained plot, as Havoc said, but it kind of also feels like Elantris. Actually, it feels a lot like Elantris, just because it has some similar characters. Honestly, go for it! It is really good.

And I doubt that he would cannabalize anything from here, considering that some of these characters (at least one) have been in his other books. (Think Purelake).
