Eerongal he/him Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 So, um, the reviews are pretty well terrible for this movie. Is anyone still interested in it? Me. I don't care what critics say, and i liked what ive seen so far.
Chaos he/him Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 Well, tell me what you think of it. I might not be able to stand it if the story is really that terrible (no matter how many hot girls are in it).
mycoltbug Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Well, tell me what you think of it. I might not be able to stand it if the story is really that terrible (no matter how many hot girls are in it). I went and saw it last night at midnight. I went in with a total expectation of it sucking. Amazingly it didn't suck. I enjoyed it, well worth the money but I'm still not sure on the overall arc of the story. Reminded me a lot of Fight Club where it's cool, but makes much more sense on a 2 or 3rd viewing. Amazing action though for sure.
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 (edited) I've heard it described as hard to follow. That alone has upped my chances of seeing it. When people say this it either means "plot is complicated" or "plot is subtle", which I like. That's why Inception sits in my top 5 favorite movies. EDIT: Or there's the "plot is convoluted and stupid" path, but that's not something I worry about. I prefer a movie to be too plot heavy rather than too little. ZeldaDad he/him Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I plan to see it but I've heard it isn't what most people have expected. I have taken that to mean that they thought it was more "pure action" and instead there was a deeper story that you had to infer based on your own interpretation. This makes me want to see it. I always go to movies with low expectations, just in case. This one will be no different.

Yeah, but Inception never had a dismal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, like Sucker Punch does. However Howard (of Schlock Mercenary) did like it, so maybe there's hope.
Eerongal he/him Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 So i went and saw it. The plot was pretty subtle, but i really liked it. If you're gonna go looking for a super-deep story, don't see this movie, but the action was very awesome, and it had a really neat style to it, and i enjoyed the twists around the actual events vs the fantastical. And what plot it does have, i thought was pulled off pretty well. There wasn't any huge, glaring plot holes or anything. In regards to inception, i honestly didnt think the plot was terribly mind-bending, or really that deep. As soon as I knew it was about dreams, i guessed it was going to try to make people be all like "whoa...was that all a dream or not?". I also didn't have a whole lot of trouble keeping the dream sequences in line, because it seemed like they moved through them linearly. Though, that's not the say i didn't enjoy it, i just didn't it was all "WHOOA! MIND F!" like people seem to consider it on the internet. I could recommend way better mind-bending movies, such as The Machinist.

Mind-blowing because of the story, but I was never confused at any point with the blocking. The one exception was in the opening scene, though the blocking came pretty quickly there, too.
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 I don't think Inception's strength is the story. Everyone says it's the story because they don't have the right term for what they really mean. It's the worldbuilding, the structure of the dream, that was intriguing and cool.

Actually, I meant what I said. Both main character arcs paid off precisely as they needed to to hit an emotional chord. I liked the dreams, but that's not why I loved that movie. I loved it because the writing was solid. The characters were solid, and I cared about what happened. It's an expertly crafted movie, where every element does their job. Worldbuilding is nice, but it is only one element of a great story. Inception had all of them.
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I agree, but the worldbuilding really is it's strength to me. The characters were good, but nothing spectacular on that front. Pacing was great, plotting was great, characters were great. Just a great movie overall.
