02ranger he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 OK, so the title is pretty self-explanatory, and I know they aren't "always" opposite, but in each case we have a spren that sought out a person, they are opposite genders. Kaladin and Syl, Shallan and Pattern, Jasnah and Ivory, Lift and Wyndle, Ym and his spren (which was said to have a female voice). The only exception I can think of right now is Dalinar and the Stormfather, but in that case Dalinar bonded the Stormfather rather than the Stormfather searching out Dalinar. Is there a WoB about this or is it covered in the books somewhere and I missed it? Is it maybe just a quirk of Brandon's writing? Does it have any significance? Of course, there's also the question of whether gender means the same thing to a spren as a human, and I don't believe it does, but that still raises questions. If spren don't care about or have a gender and are just choosing forms for the physical realm, why are they choosing opposite gender forms? 2
Corax Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 (edited) Renarin refers to Glys as "he." Eta: "'I thought it was me,' Renarin whispered. 'My mind. But Glys, he says...' Renarin blinked. 'Truthwatcher.'" Edited September 13, 2015 by Corax

Just one think, if you use the exception for "Spren who don't choose the human", you must put in this set also Lift-Wyndle (He didn't to make the bond with her). PS: Seems that Dalinar was bonded with the Stormfather before of the final scene on the top of the tower, therefore maybe your exception could be false.
Guest Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 There was a thread about this a short while ago... You forgot Renarin who bonded male Glys. Basically, Feather asked if the gender of the spren was relevant to which Brandon answered that yes, it was, but not in the way she was thinking. Though there is no way to know what Brandon thought she was thinking so it is hard to extrapolate. Thus there is something about it, but it may not end up being a huge deal. Many people have theorized the gender of the spren reflected the gender preference the knight had for romantic partner. I personally do not think it is related as I trust canon more than spren gender to figure out which side of the fence a character dances. I also suspect Brandon assumed Feather thought of this theory as there has been conversations about it which would disprove it, but there is not a hard evidence. What it means then? I have no idea, but I somehow do not think it will end up being overly important.
ivoryblade Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) What about Dalinar and the Stormfather? EDIT: I misread your post; I see you’ve already taken this into account. My apologies. Edited September 14, 2015 by ivoryblade
