Needless to say, I'm a fan of Sanderson's writing. I've read almost all the books except emperor's soul and a couple of the lesser known ones. I don't expect to post around here too often, but I will check in every now and then.  I'm completely new to the Shards, slivers, splinters, etc. When I was reading the books I only noticed the connection that hoid was mentioned in a lot of the books. So I've gleaned over the coppermind.net about how all the books are connected, and I feel like I understand a lot more. However, the more I read about it, the more confused I get. Has someone made a easier way to understand these things through another website (besides coppermind) or like a video? I'd totally love to understand all this cosmere awesomeness.

Hmmm. One of our old podcasts gives some basics here.

I can summarize the big stuff for you, and you can ask more specific questions if you want.

In the cosmere, way long ago, this "thing" known as Adonalsium was Shattered into sixteen god-like entities known as the Shards of Adonalsium, or Shards for short. These sixteen Shards were taken up by sixteen men and women. A man named Hoid was also present at the Shattering, but his role is unknown. These sixteen Shards went to various worlds throughout the cosmere, and in at least some cases created life there and fueled magic through the interaction between the Shards, the world, and the people.

Hoid has been alive this whole time, jumping between worlds and working behind the scenes at some unknown goal. An organization of Worldhoppers, known as the Seventeenth Shard, is trying to stop whatever he is doing. Rayse, holder of the Shard Odium, wants to be the only Shard in the whole cosmere. He's killed and Splintered the Shards Devotion and Dominion on Sel (Elantris). He has also killed and Splintered Honor on Roshar. Hoid dislikes Rayse intensely.

That's the main background, any more specific questions?

Yes, that answered some questions. I had some other ones about what you mentioned but I did some research on my own. Now that you gave me some context I can understand things a bit better. Thanks!

So the letter mentions how Rayse destroyed (splintered?) devotion and dominion. Did this happen during my reading of Elantris and I missed it? Or has it yet to be explained?
