First time posting a topic, so please don't Riot my fear of social interactions.

What if, per se, we have been looking at Hoid the wrong way. If you dont want to read the entire thing, skip to the bolded paragraph.

Everyone here(I spend TOO much time reading these forums) assumes the same thing about Hoid. that he is good.

Personally, I don't really think he is good, just someone hell-bent on getting his goal accomplished, but trying to keep it quiet. The scene in WoK where he goes all "I would destroy your world to accomplish my goal, though I would weep" seems to suggest a more personal nature to his plans. I know Dragonsteel will tell us more, but I think that Hoid lost someone to the Shards. Maybe a love interest, or a brother. He is trying to go from Shardworld to Shardworld in attempts at locating who, and what, is responsible.

Perhaps Hoid needs something that he wants, and maybe he is willing to do what he must to get it. That doesn't mean that he can't help everyone he meets, but those are his "side quests" so to speak.

Evidence is simply this; Hoid is a deep, mysterious character, who sounds sad behind those blue eyes. Also, Hoid never jokes about Renarin, maybe because he can understand weakness, and knows that Renarin is a good person. Hoid also seems to be deeply invested in the worlds he visits, going as far as to "leave" a Lerasium bead at the WoA. Plus, Hoid has refused to reveal his goals, perhaps because he knows that some Shards are watching and aware of who he was. We know Dragonsteel will include all 16 original Shard-Holders, and that they at least knew each other. Rayse and Tanavast were brothers, and the other SH despised Rayse. Maybe Hoid is trying to re-unite his friends, which could explain why in the infamous letter there is no acknowledgement of Sazed by him. Because he doesn't care. Also could explain why he is on the run from the 17th Shard; because(maybe) the reformation of Adonalsium could destroy the SH. Hoid only wants his friends back, and does not think Adonalsium needs to be remade.

As for his powers, it is probably because Adonalsium was more than the Shards. Perhaps Hoid absorbed the leftovers of Adonalsium, giving him the powers he would need to make it through the Cosmere.

In short, Hoid is trying to accomplish a goal more personal than we would think. He wants to rescue his friends from Dragonsteel(or something similar), and will help those in the times between. Adonalsium was more than Shards, and Hoid got the leftovers, giving him his powers. Adonalsium's recreation would kill his friends, and himself, but the 17th Shard will do it.

Interesting idea. Welcome.

I have always thought Hoid did things for what he deems good not what anyone else might deem to be  good. But he does have a history of doing good things.

I agree with Arook, since we don't know all that much (cough cough hardly anything). I think that Hoid does see what he is doing as good, which might not seem good to other people. A popular topic I like to converse is the idea that Hoid may actually be the main antagonist in Sanderson's ending series.

I don't have much evidence to back up this theory, but I don't think that it's such a crazy idea that it wouldn't be true. Taking in what we know Hoid really is a neutral character. We've seen him do good things sure but we don't know if he's done any bad things in the name of what he considers 'good'.

So what I'm really trying to say here is I have absolutely no idea what Hoid is doing and I'm super excited to find out. And I would not be disappointed if he were a major antagonist.

I'm also new so could someone let me know how I'm doing?

I think it would be wrong to say that Hoid isn't good. After all, you even quoted him saying that he would weep if he had to destroy Roshar to accomplish his goals and you say that he will help other people as well. Also, In order to be prepared to destroy an entire world to "save" his friends (who are practically gods and whose only threats are other shardholders) he would have to be extremely mentally unhinged. A lot can be said about Hoid from what we know, but mentally unhinged isn't one of them.
