What was the upcoming book featuring disabilities?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub-forum. Didn't know where else to ask and I can delete afterwards. Anyway...

A while back, I read about an upcoming story he was going to write that was Cosmere-related (iirc [Do we call them Cosmere books or Shardworld books?]) about having disabilities which made you stronger. I was wondering if that has any information anywhere I can read about. Sorry that I don't remember much else. And thanks.

Nah this is a fine spot. The book you seem to describing is called "The Silence Divine" and it's a standalone cosmere novel. We are probably a decade or more away from seeing this published, with all the other books Brandon has said he wants to do first. If he does end up doing another stand-alone, the Silence Divine is first on his list. The Shardworld that the Silence Divine is set on is located in the same solar system as Roshar.

He's planning another stand-alone story about a world where virus and germs have evolved and possess magic powers. So if you catch a cold you can fly, when you get over it, you can't any more.Source

I'm also like 90% sure that disabilities will give you powers too in this world. I may have seen that in the TWG archive. If I find it, I'll post a quote. I think the main character is supposed to be deaf, thus the title of the book. I hope this helped!

Ah interesting. I saw that name on the upcoming books list but there was nothing about it. Certainly helps, thanks! Interesting to know that it's in the same system as Roshar. Gotta be a crazy system with all that stuff going on on those planets.

Okay found the quote from the old TWG. Turns out the character has a disease that makes him deaf, so I'm probably wrong about the disabilities.

he also mention the future book The Silence Divine and gave us a short explanation. Apparently in this story the magic system is based on diseases. what that means is that when you get sick the virus also imparts a special power, having evolved to do this in order to stay alive. the example brandon gave was that u catch a cold and then have the ability to fly for that time. the books working title comes from the highest class in this society in which a disease has made its people go deaf, but grants them some great power. i think this a very interesting concept as you could randomly gain and lose powers at anytime and in order to gain a power your body is weekend and your life essentially put at risk.

Very interesting concept indeed and totally Brandonesque! I'd actually like to see more about alternative abilities in fiction (largely considered disabilities in our present day reality) and in the Cosmere, whether caused by infliction or inherited genetic trait. I think it's a valid concept to explore and embrace because I imagine (though I've no data to support this notion) that there might well be many alternatively-abled people out there who are fantasy/science fiction fans who are readers of Brandon Sanderson. Just as Spook could "see" without sight, what if a character could "feel" without touch, for example (i.e.: a paraplegic who wasn't able to reach out, or some such other example). I don't know. I just think it's a great concept and one that just might embrace a group of people all too often marginalized by society.
