Hi, so quick question I wanted to ask. Is there any way for there to be a Sliver of Adonalsium?

I saw a thread a while back about a tweet Brandon posted about Hoid (Link: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/21916-hoid-tidbit/ ) and it got me thinking. Since Brandon has said that Hoid isn't a Shard or a Herald, and he was present when Adonalsium shattered, maybe Adonalsium "shattering" was his power being released, what was left is Hoid who now no longer has complete power.

I also kinda base this on the a phrase Hoid says in the one of the Stormlight Archive books (I can't remember which):

"I was named after a rock, one that became worthless for my wearing it" (paraphrased)

So that's about it, what do you think? I tried searching for something that completely disproved this theory and I couldn't find it, sorry if it was something really obvious.

Hey...welcome to the 17th shard. I don't know if that is right. Could be...but I think that the story of hoid is going to be a complicated one by the time we get to read it. The same can be said for adonalsium. So it's not a bad idea...maybe just one that's a little too simple. Maybe expand it a bit...

But...Hey, Welcome to the 17th shard! Have an up vote!

I thinking he's saying Hoid is more like a speck of Adonalsium dust that got left on the floor will the 16 larger pieces got picked up and run off with, then Hoid kind of developed sentience.

Whoops! Nope, I read wrong. Matt, I think you may have meant to say Adonalsium 'Sliver' (like the Lord Ruler after he held shard power; a sentient being that once had power), and not Splinter (power that can take on sentience).

Actually, this theory has been floating around for awhile. The bigger names (and admittedly much more Brandon-ly well-versed persons) on the site disagree with it though, so it hasn't gathered much steam. Doesn't mean you're wrong though. I actually wrote a post probably a couple years back theorizing that Hoid was Adonalsium, and is now gathering pieces of himself and trying to right what happened.

Anyway, you aren't alone :)

When Hoid says these words, he also says that he began his existence as an idea: do you think that it is a metaliterary idea (he is referring to his being a character in a book) or that in the first moments of his life he was not human?

QUESTION

Is Hoid human?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Hoid was human a long time ago. Now... It's complicated. We would call him human, and so will pretty much everyone else, but he is not exactly that.

According to this, Hoid is human.

Right, I meant o say Sliver not Splinter XD, thanks. Good to know that I'm not completely off base at least, since other people thought of his already.

Well kinda the second one, most of the shards that exist now (Ruin for example) wouldn't be called Human anymore (at least from what I've seen), but after releasing their power whoever held it went back to being human or whatever race they belonged to (this is also kinda my theory as to why Brandon says Hoid is human). As for the "idea" part I don't really have a good answer for you, my best guess would be that maybe Adonalsium also represented an idea, kinda like the shards do, but of a complete/perfect being (though there probably some lore out there I haven't read that disproves this).

Anyway, thanks for the replies everyone.

He could have also stamped himself. "Began life as a concept. Words on a page." = him planning out what he wanted to incorporate into him stamp? Might be a good way to change his appearance. He does seem to know himself well enough to create a stamp haha

Hm, a Hoid-stamp: that would be the only way to induce me collecting stamps... if they could speak like Wit!

Random thought association from looking at your post...(I'm not sure if this is possible inside of the realm of the cosmere) but it would be awsome to be able to soul stamp your cat so that he/she talked like wit.  I would love to have a pet kitty that insulted people for me!
