Armor out of bonded spren?

Question

Posted

This may have already been asked, I have no idea, but could you technically make armor out of your radiant shardblade? Sigzil made Aux into a bunch of weird shapes, and as long as everything was connected, and since the material that they turn into is incredibly light, wouldn't it make good armor for any radiant who has sworn the third ideal but not the fourth?

I think Syl says in Book 4 that she can turn into anything made of metal. So yes? Like @Returnedsaid though it's having to be rigid. believe it or not most amour is quite flexible and the sorts of thing that a Radiant could blocked are probably better tanked with Stormlight.

I don't have a specific source for this, but I think it's implied a bond/connection is needed for more complex objects and it wis made clear that a clear mental image is needed so it may just be a skill issue?

That source is from Sunlit Man. I remember Nomad talking about it and using Aux to make clocks(something about how it only worked once Nomad himself understood how clocks worked).

Which does bring up something interesting in that clocks are not one individual piece. So I think yes, you could, but it would cost you stormlight, I think. There’s another part in the Sunlit Man where Aux consumes investiture to become larger, so I assume making Shardplate would be big enough for that.

This does bring up an interesting point of how a sufficiently skilled 3rd ideal radiant could be equal to a 4th ideal radiant.(except for that a 4th ideal radiant could have both plate and blade)

I think that the issue is mostly with movement. Shardmetal is very rigid and as far as we've seen is very difficult to manifest as anything other than one piece. So even though you might be able to manifest the spren as something armor-shaped it would probably be just one single, inflexible piece, which would make moving very difficult. It could work well as a shield, like Kaladin used in WoR, or armor that works better as a single piece (like a breastplate).
