Well... technically...

And then later:

So yeah, the current definition is actually meaningless, IAU already decided what is a planet and what is not

I think the list of planets is based on the definition they put out. It's like explaining the rules of multiplication and then saying 7x8=56

I'm not going to comment on this discussion about Pluto, because it tires me out. Pluto is not a planet, and that's not going to change for the foreseeable future.

Well yeah, but I recently learnt that Mercury isn't actually in hydrostatic equilibrium anymore...

Morning Star, the third book in Red Rising, though it's Sci-Fan and apart from the fact that it's spread across the Solar System, it isn't too science-y

If you don't count the Red Rising series, then Death's End, the final book of the Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy

tbf it's sorta inevitable if you're that close to the sun. doesn't stop it from being a planet. It's still quite round. anyhoo.

Have you read and/or watched The Martian?

EPIC EXOPLANET NEWS

ooo. possible protection from Proxima's flares and the subsequent radiation.

I'm also noting all this for a sci-fi book I'm writing.

Also, the fact that flares happen every 5.12 Earth Days is really cool.

OH! YOU'D GET STORMING AMAZING AURORAE

Hey y'all. No idea if there was a space discussion. I decided to make one :3

I'll hand out a few questions to kickstart the discussion.

How did you first get into astronomy or space science, and what’s your favourite topic in space science right now, and why?

For me personally, I had a placemat which had the solar system on it. One thing led to another, and I'm a very big space nerd now. My fave topic rn is star formation and the formation of solar systems.

Ayy for a while I was super into space

I just like

Liked stars

So I started learning about them

Still stars are my favorite topic

Proxima d is likely a very dead world due to it being HOT. Proxima b is more likely to be habitable.

mmmm

87 degrees isn't that hot

Under 1 atm of pressure, water-based biochemistry is still possible; we're relatively close to the freezing point, so why can't they be close to the boiling point?

And then there's also the possibility of greater pressure keeping water liquid past 100 celsius, and solvents other than water

I don't think I'd like 87°C. SUre. It might have hyperthermophiles but it would be habitable for humanity. I'd much prefer (but still hate) Proxima d if it has an atmosphere. It would be something like 30°C. bleh.

30 degrees is like normal summer temperature here

40 is not uncommon

I can barely do 30 as it is.

Several times last summer, it was 40 degrees but also cloudy so there were power outages

No air conditioning for a few hours

That sounds pleasant (/s). I'm barely coping with 29°C at the moment. Why'd the clouds cause power outages?

Because everyone was using air conditioning, but the solar panels (in my suburb, most homes have solar panels on them) weren't generating much power

Even the traffic lights stopped working 💀
