Emberdark wasn’t bad perse. I enjoyed Starling’s plot arc very much. But anything involving Dusk kind of sort of bored me, except when he kept calling the dirty colonists idiot in his head. That was cool. But Patji was kinda boring.

I will never understand the minds of the Shard

for one thing, Luthadel isn’t the best setting, but it’s the setting of one of Brandon’s greatest books. I would have picked the Shattered Plains, or Kilahito, because of the amazing narratives there. Dragons exist in IotE, but they are Yolish, not First Of The Sunian or whatever.
