It was more a palace than a house, really, and the entire thing glittered. A long table was set up in the ballroom, covered in rich foods. Various meats dripped with grease, fresh fruits were arranged artfully in crystal bowls, and decadent charcuterie boards filled in the gaps. There were soups, salads, breads, pastries. The rest of the ballroom contained smaller circular tables, where places were set out. Three forks, two spoons, a knife, and a name card. A salad plate, a dessert plate, a soup bowl, a plate for the main course, a wineglass, a water glass. All the dishes were part of a set Aurylia had gotten made specifically for this year’s hunger games. Each table had a centerpiece and tablecloth themed after a specific spore; the spiky crimson table was her personal favorite. Aurylia surveyed the room one final time. Servants were already standing at the walls. A butler was waiting to collect luggage as the guests ate. And, of course, the screens. In place of windows—disgusting things, showing weather that never seemed to match the occasion—the ballroom had more than a dozen alcoves containing tall, arched screens. Later, they’d show footage of the games themselves, but right now, they took the form of pale silver windows that looked out onto a sea of colored spores. Each “window” showed a different color of spores. Finally, Aurylia took a last look in the mirror. Her hair, which shimmered a different color every time she moved, fell nearly to her feet, with two small buns out of which poked a pair of antlers. They had long been a topic of upper class gossip—were they surgically implanted, or merely clever hair ornaments? Aurylia had never spoken on the subject. Her dress was a simple, silky black (all the better to accentuate her hair). Satisfied, she clapped her hands. The invitations had been sent out. The guests would be arriving any minute, and she couldn’t wait to watch this year’s games. Between them walked a man in a dark, impeccably tailored suit, cut in a style that valued lineage over fashion. White gloves covered his hands; a silver-capped cane rested lightly in one of them. His pace was unhurried, his posture exact. Aurylia turned as he approached. He halted at a respectful distance and inclined his head. “My lady Aurylia,” he said, his voice smooth and cultivated, bearing the cadence of an older aristocracy. “Permit me to say: the arrangements are exemplary. One rarely encounters a gathering so… deliberately composed.” His gloved hand made the faintest gesture toward the silver screens. “I trust this year’s proceedings will prove suitably illuminating and entertaining.” Lady Ruth Flamche enters, let in by a servant. She is wearing a fine, low-cut dress with long gloves, that is the same color as water. The color is extra striking due to the hundreds of breaths she holds making the color around her more vibrant. It shimmers and flows like waves as she hurries over to the group with the hostess and her companions and bows slightly. "My lady Aurylia! My apologies for my tardiness. Oh! And my lord Vealor! A pleasure to see you." Edited December 27, 2025 by Ookla the Mistborn

If any of my servants deserve a pay raise it would be Grace, don't you think so?"

Oh, Ruth, you won’t believe when I tell you that Jetta just forgot to write ‘no plus ones’ on the invite…and I know I should have watched her more closely, but I’ve just been so busy…the point is, the girl has got to go. Where did you find Grace? I want one like her.”

She has been working for my family since my grandfather was alive you see." She gets a thoughtful expression "Oh, I know! She's been teaching some of her grandchildren since she really should be retired. We're going to be giving them a chance to do her job for a couple days, a test of sorts you might say, and if any are up to your standards I'll see if one or two might want to work for you." She smiles, satisfied "Would that work dear?"

It really is a pity servants have to retire…almost worth paying for their medicine just so I can keep the good ones around.” She sighed, soft and satisfied. “But tell me, Ruth, how have you been? I haven’t seen you in ages.”

She frowned "Cost way more than it should too, it was a fortune to get to the 3rd heightening, those district pigs!" She scowled.

Just look at you!” But she still nodded sympathetically. “Maybe the games will help. The winning district always has the best sales for a few months. Speaking of which, have you picked out a favorite for this year?”

"I was still in the districts when the interviews and scores. Speaking of which when will it start?"
