Since I don't think anyone has done this yet, let's talk board games.

For those who know what I'm talking about, I mean eurogames, with minimum complexity being something like Wingspan.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I don't mean any low-level games like ludo or uno or cludo or chess or monopoly. I mean at least 2.5 weight on BGG (look it up).

Board games I play:

  • Terraforming Mars (have the Venus Next and Colonies expansions)
  • Dune: Imperium Uprising
  • Bios: Genesis
  • Bios: Megafauna
  • Bios: Origins

Soon I shall get either High Frontier 4 All or the Mistborn: the Deckbuilding game. I know, the complexity difference is massive, but I like card drafting/deckbuilding.

Other Board Games I know:

  • Dominant Species (Know the rules)
  • Terraforming Mars: Turmoil (a third expansion)
  • Evolution (know the rules)
  • Wingspan (know the rules)
  • I feel like I'm forgetting something.

Have you ever tried Bloodborne: The Card Game or Gloomhaven? These two games made me a Board Game designer 😆

Speaking of Mistborn: the Deckbuilding Game, you have to play it once you get your hands on it. It's an amazing game.

I just looked them up on BGG. Both sound like One Deck Dungeoun (I knew I'd forgotten something).

If anything ever makes me a board game designer, it'll be something Phil Eklund made. The Bios: Earth Trilogy is all 4+ on BGG weight ratings. I agree with the reviewers that say you need to be a molecular biologist to understand Bios: Genesis, a paleontologist or geologist or astrobiologist for Bios: Megafauna and a anthropologist for Bios: Origins.

My latest campaign was actually insane. Got the hydrothermal vent as always in Genesis, created one of my best abominations yet in Megafauna, got rockets and nuclear power without ever inventing plastic in Origins.

While not all editions reach your "required" weight - I mostly play Carcassonne, although we use a very specific set of expansions and a few house rules to make it accessible for my disabled 77yo mother, who uses games like this to aid memory and fine motor control.

While not a "board" game, I've been playing MtG since 1994 (and it is now "officially" the most complex card game in the world).

There’s a game I love called War Chest that feels like a real-world version of (I think it was called Tower?) from SA.

This doesn’t meet your standards for complexity, but I feel obligated to mention it; my all time favorite game is called onitama. Imagine chess, perfected.

I had not heard of Carcassonne before.

I haven't played MtG before and looked up the rules. 299 pages is a lot, but from what I can tell, games don't use all the rules.

It's not just the number of pages in the rulebook. . . Forbes Article

I might consider getting MtG after the Mistborn Deckbuilding Game and HF4A.

You gotta get a friend to introduce you into MTG. It's not the kind of game where you can sit down and read its rulebook to 'get'. So it isn't exactly 'conventional' in that sense. I would suggest going to Pre-Release events at your local game stores. It will ease you into the game.

And yes try the Mistborn Deckbuilding Game! Not recommending it just because I'm a fan of Brandon but me and the folks in the board game design scene were really impressed on how well John D. Clair (the designer) put the game together.

And I've got more recommendation for you...

Mercurial is an interesting game in a sense that it doesn't use words to explain the cards, and playing it comes with the experience of learning a new language. Really cool!

I also recently played this game called Pax Pamir, and gosh... that game is extraordinary.

Last but not least, if you like Pokemon and Deckbuilding game, try out The Vale of Eternity. This one will be on the lighter side though.

I know no one who plays MtG... I don't have a local game store either. It's all been Amazon or Ion Games Design.

I'll read the rules for these other three some time. I have heard a bit about the Pax games.

I'm also "Treamayne" on MTGO, if you make an account I can gift you some collection and teach basics there. . .
Bonus, the Computer automates many rules while you are learning.
Basic and Comprehensive Rules can be downloaded here.

That said, if you don't know anybody that plays and have no local game store, then it may not be a game you want to invest time into learning. Online play can be toxic without an established playgroup, and even playing at a store is a crapshoot if you don't have an in-person playgroup.

I JUST played a game of M:tDBG. I completely solo-ed the Lord Ruler :D.

I was down to like nine health on like turn 5 because of some rusting koloss, but I got the super-expensive card that gives 8 healing if you burn 3 pewter. I had to use atium to make it work, but in the end I got back to the 20s health-wise. I quickly finished the Pits of Hathsin mission and claimed my atium reward as the Lord Ruler constantly hit my allies. I then finished the Kredik Shaw mission and got the Lord Ruler down to 25 health before an Edict boosted him back. I then somehow completed the Skaa Caverns mission and won the game. In the end, I had 6 boxings and 1 atium.

I played as Kelsier, but with how much I used pewter towards the end I would've been better off as Vin.

Very fun game. Probably going to play against @LordHathsin_Surviv0r next weekend.

You managed to beat Lord Ruler in an attempt? That's a really amazing feat!

I've played the co-op mode with 3 / 4 people for many times now and I have never beat him ONCE. 😭

There are some moments where I was only 1 round away from winning, but always fell short. It really felt like that scene Kelsier fought Lord Ruler in Book 1. At least it's yay in the thematic department.

Alright so now I've played 2 more games, both multiplayer.

The first one, I was playing Vin and @LordHathsin_Surviv0r was playing Kelsier, and two others who had not read Mistborn were playing Shan and Marsh. Very quickly, I started doing high amounts of damage, and so before round 3 was up the other 3 players had all decided to team up against me. I still ended up killing Shan (I was Vin, so thematically appropriate) before @LordHathsin_Surviv0r got the luckiest hand and the Target, so he wiped out both me and Marsh. So he won. It was actually quite a fast game, because no one had reached the point where you get atium. And basically all of the missions were ignored except Luthadel Garrison because that gives damage.

For the second game, it was 3 player, so I was playing Marsh, @LordHathsin_Surviv0r playing Shan (he wanted to prove he could win as 'the Noble') and a third player as Vin. This time, because I was Marsh, I tried to win by completing all the missions, but once again the other players teamed up on me, even though I was barely doing damage this game. I was so close to completing all 3 missions when they knocked me out. Then Vin and Shan (@LordHathsin_Surviv0r) battled and once again, Vin won.

Seems a lot of fun! Wish I could play with yall HAHA!

As of this moment my friend group is just really curious about beating Lord Ruler so we didn't really want to go PVP. We haven't cracked Lord Ruler yet :')
