“Fill out the paper.”

Dolly gritted her teeth. “This isn’t your fault,” she said softly, “so I’ll do it if you tell me your name.”

He was exhausted and in pain.

Dolly nodded once, the name sending her another wave of hope. Ben the guard. Callie the scientist. People with names, lives, stories. One name at a time, she’d remind them. “Thank you, Callie,” She said, meeting the scientist’s eyes. She picked up the poem and started reading.

She shook her head. Sari read beside her on the other side of the partition.

“I… smart. Can I have a journal and pen?”

“Wait. I can zap people?”

“No. You can, theoretically, recover from any injury.”

“So my role is to improve this, correct? Sponges or flatworms rather than cnidarians would make a better base phylum, in my opinion.”

“And that pertains to this experiment because…”

Sari started and finished at the same time as her and did the same. Callie came down and took the papers.

“Better healing, with more redundancy, and if you can deal with the compatibility problems it can be used for grafts. You can’t come back from being dismembered or burned unless your cells can stay alive and get the necessary energy in the meantime.”

Dolly stood and crossed to Sari. “Whatever—whatever you believe about Astor. It doesn’t matter until we get out. We just have to work together until then, and then we’ll talk to him and he’ll tell you that everything’s okay.”

Ben came over. “You need to come with me.”

“Alright… I assume the memory problem is caused by the destruction of neurons in a way that can’t be healed back correctly. Have you tried developing telepathy and memory implanting?”

“Right.” Dolly took a deep breath. Shoulders back. Neck tall. Walk like you own the place, and maybe you will. Good habits. “So, Ben, how long have you worked here?”

“Part of my own experiment was an attempt to increase creativity. I think it’s a good idea to make researchers experiments and experiments researchers, actually - it helps counteract the original position fallacy, if I recall the name correctly.”
