Ideas and ramblings on the future of SA characters

Ok, in the thread Predictions for Stones Unhallowed I realized that maxal and I, with our theories and ramblings that contained the scenarios for weddings and Adolin's or Kaladin's future children, kind of strayed off the topic   So as not to cluster that thread further and let it focus on what can happen in Stones Unhallowed (and not much later or even in the back five), I decided to create this thread - it's a place designed to post ideas and ramblings related to distant future (and the next generation of Kholins and their friends  ).

I feel obliged to warn you that quite propably some of said ramblings are long and rather useless (but hilarious - always funny to write and often also funny to read). Even the craziest idea can go here, it's healthy to share such things (even if sometimes only because laughing is healthy :) ). And if someone is ambitious - even some fan-fiction concerning future (I do like to read such things even if I don't feel that my english is good enough to write them myself).

Under spoiler tags I'll put the things that I or maxal wrote in the forementioned thread. It goes with a pattern - what's in a quote is maxal's, the rest is mine. If someone else joined in this ramblings I'll mention who said it. Generally it's the story/ramblings of how maxal and I see the future for Adolin&Shallan and Kaladin(&Tarah) and their kids

The ramblings on Kaladin and Tarah

Kaladin will eventually head for Kohlinar where he will get entangled within the rebellion. He will meet up again with Tarah who would have joined their movement..............................................................................

I actually like the idea of Tarah being a women who disguised herself as a man to join the army. Kaladin discovered her, but instead of reporting her, he fell in love with her. However, she gets uncovered. Kaladin next fails to tell her how he feels and she leaves, but she ends up in the rebellion and they meet again :D

Your idea of Tarah is actually great and nearly the same as mine - I only thought her to be not from Alethkar or any Vorin country but somewhere else, possibly Iri (I love the mental image of her with golden hair that she covered with some herbal paint to fit in more among Alethi  ). But I think Kal told her about his feelings (in the chasms chapters, he said something about once holding her very close... I perceive this as an indication of at least somehow romantic relationship). Propably there was something between them but Kaladin "failed" because he didn't pursue this relationship hard enough? Or there was something but he failed to prove to her how much she really means to him and she felt as his feelings weren't truly sicere so she left him? But one thing for sure - a fighting woman is what I want to see in SA ;) (and I definitely do not hope that Tarah is the Roshar version of Eowyn... ) Their meeting in Kholinar would be great - and later she would follow him to Urithiru and propably become a scribe for Bridge 4 (I somehow consider normal writing to be easier and quicker than using glyphs so they could use someone to do the job besides Sigzil). Of course, the scribe position would be official and in truth she would carry some concealed weapon of herself (a dagger? in left sleeve?) to help protecting Kholins from assasins

The best thing about Tarah is that we can think of her as we would want her to be (until Brandon proves us otherwise).

I pictured Tarah with brown hair she cut short to pass as a boy... She is 17, but she claimed to be 15. Kaladin, newly squadleader, sees her/him and buys her/him into his squad to protect him/her. After a while, he realizes it is not a he, but a she. They start a clandestine relationship, in the night, in the dark. He loves her, but he does not say so. He never tells her how he feels and when she is uncovered, he fails at asking her to stay, as his wife.

I'd like to see her taken up a role into the rebellion and having Kal meet up with her again. I love the idea of a fighting women and I kind of decided Tarah was the one  Quite silly.

Kaladin may fear to ask Tarah to stay with him because of the whole mess that's going on when it comes out she's a woman. Or maybe she gets imprisoned and he fails to get to her or convince somebody in command not to punish her (with exile). The second option actually seems better ;)

But I'd rather think he did tell her how he feels but later somehow failed to keep her with him which lead her to doubt his love and be heartbroken over it. That would lead to some additional drama during their meeting and I like the idea of seeing Kal try his hardest to prove to her how much she means to him  And about that I have 2 scenarios: either he risks his life to save her (I know, cliche...) or (also cliche) after the rebellion she's to leave with some associates of hers and he runs after them to stop her, claiming that he's not going to let her go ever again. I would really like to see the romantic side of Kal  He must have it in him! And if not, then maybe Syl could give him soem pointers

I think he never told her... The little conversation he had with Adolin about girls sort of imply it... I love the idea of a romantic Kal  Tarah would run away with miscreants. After initially letting her go, Kaladin will find out they are up to no good and will launch himself after her to rescue her. He'll beat himself up as he'll fear he failed at yet protecting someone, but once he catches up, he'll find Tarah, spear in hand and few dead bodies... He'll ask her what happened and she'll answer that they tried to take advantage of her, so he took advantage of them. She'll ask him what he is doing here, to which Kal will foolishly answer he was trying to protect her. "Protect me?" she would laugh back, "As if I need protecting from you.". Kal would smile, for once. They'll leave together.

I'd rather have him letting her go and feeling stupid because of this, as in only after she left he realized how much a fool he has been to let her go (again) and decides to go after her and ask her to stay with him. On his way he finds out she may be in danger and doubles his efforts to reach her on time. He's focused on protecting but for this relationship to work I believe that Kal must understand that there are other important things in life not only duty, and one of them is love.

Ramblings on weddings and future in general

She'll [shallan] end up in very tight spot and Adolin will pop to the rescue with his newly reclaimed Blade. Shallan will appreciate having someone that cares for her. The two of them will elope  and get married through an intimate ceremony away from their family, surrounded by bridgemen  Adolin will marry Shallan as a disowned lighteye of the fourth or fifth (or even tenth) dahn following his punishment for murdering Sadeas.... He'll thus marry a women way above his station. He won't swear the first oath until much later.

Book five will end with Adolin and Shallan "official" wedding following the Alethi tradition, Kaladin will be Adolin's best man together with Renarin. Second half of SA will see them happily married surrounded by many kids, including at least one pair of twins  Adolin's eldest daughter will take after him and will be more interested into the art of war in general and swordfighting in particular than in any topic generally reserved for women.

I like this scenario ;) Especially the ceremony away from the family but with bridgemen around. But who will do the job of a priest (assuming that the vorin culture needs this kind of person for weddings)? My guess is Sigzil :D And I already like this daughter.

And the bridgemen will have to babysit those kids

By the second half of SA I'd like to also see Kaladin happily married (my current candidate for his wife is Jenet, but it can change possibly when we learn more about Tarah) and having at least one son (who could remind him of Tien... but in a good, happy way not a gloomy way). That kid would have a life... So many doting "uncles" ;) Excuse me while I curl into a ball from laughter imagining Rock tossing Kal's child up and catching them (little kids like this...) while the kid's mother looks at it with horror...

Yeah, Sigzil perfoms the ceremony and Rock weeps the whole time saying it is:"The most beautiful thing I have ever seen, you airsick lowlanders".

Bottom line is Shallan has a very strong chance of having at least one set of twins

I love the idea of these two being surrounded by 5 or 6 kids, mostly daughters, only one or two sons  I can imagine Adolin's face when his wife tells him she is pregnant, again  And Navani... Another one?

Oh yeah, Kal with a little Tien who'd be Adolin's eldest son's best friend :D Inseparable, like brothers

I can totally see this [Rock weeping at the wedding] :DAnd in the background Wit with a choir of chasmfiends.  And for the wedding feast - Rock's stew and chouta.

As for the twins thing - I didn't know that but it makes sense. And storms, Adolin's expression would be priceless. Navani would be a good grandma :) But she may suggest them finding a new hobby

And yeah - I also believe that if Kal has a son he's going to find a brother in Adolin's boy. Especially if he had only sisters and something around 5 of them   I can imagine the little Kholin prince spending whole days at Kal's place to avoid all those girlish things  Somehow in my headcanon Adolin's future son is named Aredor (as was the first version of Adolin's name).

Yes, Rock's stew. And they get married following the Horneater tradition as Shallan is part Horneater :o Horneater's wedding involves the groom to take part into a Horneater drinking contest featuring Horneater beer a few days prior to the wedding. Poor Adolin gets so drunk and so sick over this, it is not even funny.

As soon as I realized Shallan's mother had twins, I pictured Shallan would have twins as well. I figured the first kids would be one set of twins: a boy and a girl. Then a girl, then another set of twins, two girls and one last little boy and perhaps another girl in the middle. All the other ones would little quick witted Shallans  After the last kid, Navani has a talk with Shallan. She mentions a certain thing called a "drynet". The older twins and Kal's son would be the new unbeatable trio ^_^ and yeah, I sort of picture his first son would either be named Dalinar or Aredor.....

Storms, the Horneater wedding... I imagined some traditional Horneater dances that would surely include things like tossing the woman upwards and catching her  If Adolin took part in the drinking contest (tradition says it should be against the bride's father or other male family member, but due to the lack of such Rock would stand up for his cousin) there would be bridgeman around him betting on how long will he hold  And arguing who is going to carry the princeling to his room

The unbeatable trio... The greatest nightmare of Urithiru/Kholinar/wherever they live. Always getting themselves into trouble. The kind of kids of 5-7 opening the stables and letting all of the horses free which ends up with them wreaking havoc all around because horses need to exercise and they just wanted to help

BTW, we have name for Adolin's son, what about Kaladin's? I honestly have no idea, maybe Dallet after Kal's friend from the army (because it shouldn't be Tien - that would be rather depressing for Kal) :D

And they [bridgemen] are all standing around the table raising the stakes. Adolin is too stubborn to give up so he really tries, but soon he gets so drunk Kal has to put a stop to it. He'll then help carry Adolin who, after throwing once or twice  , would not stop claiming how "Kaladin is my beeeest friend eeeeeeeeeeever". Over and over again.

eah, the terrors of Urithiru: the Kohlin twins and the Captain's son. And their fathers are losing their hair trying to figure out what to do with them, but on the inside, Adolin is laughing out loud as he once was the terror of Kohlinar. He has to resist the urge to give them pointers on how to avoid getting caught

I like Tien... or Lirin? How about Cem after that boy in Wok?

And Adolin will be forever and ever reminded of this situation by the bridgemen... They are not going to let it go, too much fun for them to embarass the princeling like this. And Kaladin carries him thinking "Storms, what have I gotten myslef into..."

I guess Kal wouldn't mind his son terrorising the Urithiru as long as no-one gets seriously hurt... He would look at his antics and smile, being happy that his child can have such a happy and carefree childhood. I imagine him even protecting the boy form Tarah's anger when she decides he needs a good scolding. But as I said, as long as no-one gets hurt, because Kaladin is sure to teach his boy from early years how important it is to care for others and help them instead of hurting. I actually see the boy as one trying to help everyone so hard that he causes trouble...

But Adolin's kids are just mischievous spirits and it does rub on Kal's son as well... Adolin has a very hard time trying not to encourage them. But I also imagined at least one of Adolin's children being a proper little lady (influenced mostly by auntie Jasnah) who scowls at her brother and his bestest friend and tries to lecture them (kind of like Hermione was doing to Harry and Ron in Harry Potter ). That would be hilarious to see them ignore her and maybe even prank her even more for that...

Cenn not, because if Kal were to give a name of someone to his son then it would be a name of someone that was once very close to him. He barely knew Cenn but Dallet was his most trusted friend in the army. Tien would make the poor boy too much of a replacement for a brother Kal lost. It's enough that he has Tien's personality and ability to make Kaladin smile, he should have different name in my opinion.

If Tarah pretended to be a boy then she propably went by a false name. So maybe that's how their son would be named for the sake of the old times? ;)

Kal won't stop antagonizing Adolin on how his kids are being a bad influence on his kid. The two would bicker endlessly over this as they shared their weekly beer at the Captain's barrack.

All of Adolin and Shallan's kids share a mix of golden and red locks in various proportion, which will become the trademark of the royal family. One of the girls does take after aunt Jasnah. Strongly. Too strongly.

So that's about it when it comes to our ramblings... There is also maxal's The Fashion at the Weddings, which I'll repost as well.

Adolin and Shallan's Official Alethi Wedding

Navani secretly talks Dalinar out of forcing Adolin to wear the Kohlin's army uniform to his wedding. Upon learning he is actually allowed to wear anything he wants for his wedding, after spending so many years in an unfashionable uniform, Adolin goes ridiculously ecstatic. He promptly grabs Renarin by the hand, before he has time to bold back and hide  , and goes into a shopping spree. As he is being dragged along, Renarin silently mouths a "help" to his father with pleading eyes.

Dalinar soon regrets his decision as he is plagued by nightmares into which Adolin absurdly chooses a puffy flashy orange outfit garnished with an astronomic amount of lace and decorated with scarfs harboring all the colors of the rainbow on the pretext "it is the latest fashion father". He wakes up in cold sweat and tries to convince himself it was just a dream. It works up until he remembers the bright yellow outfit incident........... That day, his 15 years old son, when they still were in Kohlinar, before the Vengeance Pact, had walked out of his room wearing bright yellow clothing of an awkward shape. He dimly recalled how both he and Renarin could hardly conceal their laughter at the ridiculousness of the said outfit. Adolin had scold them down claiming they had no eye for fashion, to which little Renarin had answered that "perhaps they did not have an eye for fashion, but they weren't the ones looking like an over sized fluffy yellow chicken.". This time, Dalinar had failed to retain himself and had burst into laughter. Insulted, the teenager had stormed out of the palace and yes, he did went out in public wearing this humiliating clothing. As Dalinar also remembers how much the horror had actually cost, he soon jumps out of bed to go pray the 10 Heralds his son's sense of fashion has matured since the last time he has been allowed to choose his clothing.

When he sees the actual wedding outfit, Dalinar lets out an immense and audibly loud sight of relief as it is neither orange nor yellow nor puffy nor fluffy. He was pleasantly surprised his son actually chose a decent, elegant, classic outfit of deep Kohlin blue and white embroidery  (double sight of relief for Dalinar). There is indeed a scarf, but it actually looks nice.

Adolin asks his father why he seems so relief to which Dalinar answers he was afraid he'd chose something yellow. "Yellow? Yellow went out of fashion years ago, really father, you should be paying more attention".

Dalinar secretly thinks the Kohlin's army uniform could use a scarf... or two, but he would NEVER admit it to anyone, much less his elder son.

In the mean time, Shallan gets really sad. She watches her husband happily talking about clothes which only emphasis the fact she had nothing short of appropriate to wear for her on wedding. She secretly wishes she still had a mother. Jasnah frowns at her former ward's behavior and drags her mother along. They talk.

A week later, both women drag Shallan into Navani's rooms where they open a box that had just arrived. Inside, lays a dress of pristine white fit for a queen. Navani's own wedding dress and has Jasnah claims she will never marry, they both insist Shallan wears it. Shallan cries as this is the kindest thing anyone had ever done for her and she'll happily wear the gorgeous gown for her own wedding.

Kaladin and Tarah's Wedding

Upon learning his friend is finally getting married, Adolin asks him what he plans on wearing. Surprised by the question, Kaladin simply points his Kohlin's army uniform. Adolin lets out a shiver of disgust and claiming this would not do, he drags Kaladin along saying they need to go shopping. In the way out, Adolin grabs Renarin with his other hand claiming he'll need help. Renarin scolds thinking "not again".

Upon hearing the word "shopping", Drehy promptly insists he and Skar should be on guard duty to watch over the Kohlin boys as they try on clothes. Skar raises a suspicious eyebrow at this, but fail to escape as he do, ends up being drag along.

They are soon by Rock, running behind and screaming: "Wait for me you airsick lowlanders".

Kaladin is completely discouraged at the prospect of being forced into ridiculous lighteyes' outfit by the princeling. To add to his anguish, Renarin diabolically tells him about the "bright yellow outfit" incident. Kaladin starts to sweat.

As they try on clothes, Kaladin scolds the whole time, alternating between grunts and pouts. Rock weeps as it is such a grant moment. Surprisingly, Drehy astonishes everyone by actually having an opinion on... fashion. He and Adolin soon see eye to eye and both start pulling out outfits over outfits for Kaladin to try while excitedly talking about the merit of.... the color yellow. Upon hearing the dreaded word, Kaladin nearly runs out of the shop, but he is stop by weeping Rock claiming he has never been more proud of him the now.

Renarin and Skar sit in a corner. Renarin plays with his little box and sometimes offer the voice of reason when his brother appears to divert towards the more ugly outfits. Skar asks him how he can manage this, to which Renarin answers: "You should have seen him when he was younger........".

In the mean time, Jasnah asks Tarah what she intends on wearing for her wedding. Tarah promptly points her stained tattered breaches and her over sized coat. Jasnah wrinkles her nose claiming that would not do. She politely asks for Navani and Shallan assistance as the girls calmly walk of the tower to the shopping street.

It turns out, Adolin is not the only fashionata in the family. Who would have thought cold and stern Jasnah actually entertains such an interest for clothing fabrics? As they tried to find something suitable for Tarah, it does not escape Shallan's notice that Jasnah is actually trying on a few things on her own.

They end up buying one gorgeous gown for Tarah and five new dresses for Jasnah

On the day of the wedding, Kaladin puts on the outfit chosen by the Adolin/Drehy fashion team. He will never admit to anyone alive, last of all the princeling, but it actually looks nice. In fact, it looks so nice, Kaladin cannot stop looking at himself in the mirror saying: "Aren't handsome today?". And he grins. Big wide grin, but don't tell it to Adolin.

My comment to this - Personally I don't suppose that Tarah would go as far as planning to be wed in breeches... I'd imagine her digging out of her chest some old, tattered, stained and patched dress, propably the riding one, which once was hm... maybe purple, but it's hard to say as now it's grey :D But shopping-frenzy Adolin is great, I also love the idea of him teaming up with Drehy. Poor Kal  And I'll have you know that I laughed so loudly after reading about Adolin's yellow disaster, that guys living in a room next door came asking if I'm all right

I'll just remind again that the text about wedding and clothes is maxal's, I only wrote my comment at the bottom and that's the only thing I can claim.

And that is all about it until now. Every theory and every amount of ramblings is welcome (following the course of thinking above or completely different).

...

Glad you thought it was funny  :D I was meant to be.  It was triggered by the Adolin's chapter in WoK where he mentions how he had once liked to create looks out of nothing and how his father often though they looked ridiculous. I also imagined teenage Adolin being such a vain fashion victim he did end up in a few horrors, much to Dalinar's dismay. I also figured Renarin would share his father's stern view of clothing and think his older brother is going overboard most of the time, but would unfortunately end up being drag along in most of Adolin shopping frenzies.

I am also imagining Renarin is glad his father imposed the codes on them because it frees him from the trouble of having to choose something to wear and it spares him from his brother endless lectures over the next season's do's and don'ts. Renarin cannot also figure for the life of him what is so wrong about the Kohlin's army uniform and always invents himself reasons to be elsewhere when Adolin starts to rant on it, yet again.

Renarin and Dalinar used to secretly laughed at Adolin's fashion choices when they were back in Kohlinar. At feasts, they would quietly sit in a corner and play at figuring out which animal he was trying to impersonate when he chose this particular outfit. They also like to poke him about it from time to time as he gets so riled up and pouty it is almost funny. He'll storm out of the room and bang his door quite loudly claiming they did not understand anything.

Dalinar would then think "teenagers" with a sight and hope the boy would soon grow out of it.

Once, in a feast, Galivar walked to silently chuckling Dalinar and Renarin with a half-angry glare...

Galivar: Is this a secret reunion? What are the two of you conspiring about?"

Renarin: "We are trying to decide if Adolin's latest coat is more reminiscent of a mad chasmfield or a lazy chull......"

Dalinar chuckles.

Galivar: "Dalinar, brother, I am ashamed. How dare you make fun of this poor child? How about his self-esteem and his pride?"

Dalinar: "His pride? Brother, I think he may have left that in his wardrobe....."

It does not escape Renarin's notice his uncle too has chosen to wear red tonight. It must be the latest fashion....

Galivar: "Still......... It is a most difficult age... Don't you remember when you were 15?"

Dalinar: "I do. I was quite content wearing my perfectly fine uniform."

Galivar: "Yes.... so you did.... Always the boring one, weren't you ?"

And with this Galivar walks away.

Renarin: "Father, I think I may need to revise my earlier assessment. I believe uncle Galivar has the best personification of a mad chasmfield, not Adolin."

Dalinar burst out laughing.

The idea is great

But don't chickens on Roshar look differently than what we call a chicken? But anyway it's priceless. And Jasnah would look at her cousin and roll her eyes as she's too mannered to do a facepalm

"You know, father, I'd say that today Adolin looks like a whitespine."

"A whitespine? I just saw him and I could swear he's pretending to be a skyeel!"

"You both are ridiculous. There exists NO animal so colourful and so tasteless."

[EDIT] Ok, I just saw your new post. And my roommate now thinks I'm crazy  Well, I can live with that ;) (Not that she's the one to talk - she laughs at every single horror movie whenever the rest of the audience covers in fear  )

Mad chasmfiend rules

And Navani, who listened to the whole conversation approaches and says: "Right now you insult all chasmfiends on Roshar, dear Reanrin. Even they don't look like this."

(I know my humor isn't too funny today - I have waay to much studying right now, so I procratinate   )

Made me laugh as well... And Navani.. That was good.

And Adolin approaches looking quite flush and slightly too happy...

Adolin: "Hey, what is so, funny, what are you all talking about? I want to laugh too"

Renarin: "Nothing. We were merely commenting on this season latest do's. It seems red it quite the color nowadays...."

Upon hearing this, Adolin grins excitably and starts talking with wide arms gestures.

Adolin: "So you notices as well? Perhaps there is hope for you after all, little brother. Yeah, red is quite the new fashion. It is sooooo tragic, like a the painting of a battle that had gone bad and......."

Renarin: "It makes me think of mad chasmfields....."

Dalinar silently chuckles.

Adolin: "Mad... What? Chaaaasm-field???"

Adolin blinks slightly at this as if tyring to focus.

Adolin: "But..... but.... Oh. Me. You are laughing of me, now aren't you?"

Renarin: "You know we wouldn't dare.... Oh look, isn't the Brightness Elvi over there? She chose to wear red as well..."

Adolin: "Brightness Elvi? Where? Where?"

Adolin turns in every direction, trying to get a glimpse.

Renarin: "She is looking this way........"

Adolin: "She is?"

Adolin blushes.

Renarin: "Red on red. You are really tonight's do brother. I think you may have surpassed uncle Galivar."

Adolin blinks some more.

Adolin: "I think I need another drink..."

He promptly grabs a glass of violet vine from the passing tray, but in the process, he missed a step and nearly made the whole thing tumble. As he is about to get a taste, the glass is promptly teared away his hands by none other then Dalinar.

Dalinar: "Oh no you don't."

Adolin: "But father...."

Dalinar: "No but. Enough. Vine. For. Tonight. It is one think to have parade looking like yesterday's leftovers, it is quite another to have you get drunk."

Adolin: "I. Am. Not. Drunk."

Jasnah rolls her eyes in the background. Silly kid.

But don't chickens on Roshar look differently than what we call a chicken?

No but most people on Roshar have never seen a bird other than a chicken which are often exported from Shin as livestock. Because of this whenever someone sees a bird they assume that it's just another kind of chicken. For example Shallan actually sees a parrot at the menagerie but she just thinks its a strange chicken.

Years later, the Kholin brothers stood together on the plateau, waiting for the chasmfiend to be weakened and the hunt to begin. Renarin looked at the chasmfiend intently for quite a while, until he turned towards his brother.

"I made a terrible mistake few years back", claimed Renarin.

Adolin raised an eyebrow.

"What about, brother?"

"About you looking like the chasmfiend.", admitted the younger Kholin.

Adolin frowned a bit, trying to remember what his brother is talking about. Finally something clicked in his mind. Memories of that night were rather fuzzy for him, but he did recall his father and brother mocking him. He grimaced. He certainly didn't want to be reminded of THAT.

"So you are going to apologize?" prompted Adolin, hoping to regain his pride.

"I guess I must" Renarin shook his head. "I look at this chasmfiend and I cannot really see the resemblance."

"Well, of course you can't!" claimed Adolin, glad that his brother won't mock him again.

"But it's too far to hear me, I fear" continued Renarin.

Adolin gave him a puzzled look, trying to grasp his meaning.

"I guess it's not mad or not drunk enough" finished the younger brother, fixing his spectacles.

Adolin looked at Renarin, finally understanding that he has been ridiculed again, and opened his mouth few times as if to protest but remained silent, not finding the right words. He just shot his brother a sharp glance and promptly turned his back to him, walking over to chat with some officers.

Behind, Renarin chuckled to himself.

I also assumed the kids of a Highprince would have seen large variety of "chicken", thus the association made by young Renarin.

Ok, this is an idea I have had for quite some time and finally I have the time and brain capacity to write it down after I'm done with exams for at least a week

On the Matter of Wedding Dances part 1

Kaladin doesn't dance. Just no. Like a horse doesn't fly, or a chicken doesn't swim, or an axehound doesn't talk, or...

"Come on, Bridgeboy!" Adolin called out exasperated. "What is your problem?"

"I don't dance, Princeling" grunted Kaladin.

Rock and Sigzil, sitting by the wall nearby, looked at each other and rolled their eyes. The discussion was going on for at least few hours now and didn't show any signs of ending.

"Do I have to spell it to you?" groaned the Kholin prince. "You are going to get married. It's tradition that the bride and the groom lead the first dance. Therefore you MUST do it."

"I don't dance."

Adolin barely stopped himself from slaming his head on the nearest wall. Why did Renarin have to choose today of all days to accompany Lift in checking the greenhouses? He looked around searching for potential support and spotted the two unfortunate bridgemen, who by then started to play "who can yawn louder".

"Rock! Sigzil! Back me up, will you?" shouted Adolin in their direction.

The forementioned two looked to him and then at their captain.

"Well, he is right, Kal" muttered Sigzil. "In Alethi tradition and in almost every other I know of."

"Just get to it and let's have it done with!" yelled Rock. "I have to go and take care of the supper. If tonight I have the whole hungry Bridge 4 on my back I will tell them it's the fault of you two."

Apparently, even he could lose his patience. Especially in a situation like this.

And everything started with Adolin coming to them to ask them for help in teaching Kaladin how to dance: Sigzil with his flute and Rock with his general musical ability. They tried to warn him, they did. But the prince didn't listen. And now they were wasting time.

"Damnation, Kal! The steps are simple! It's nothing compared to the spear kata you always do! Why must you be stubborn like a chull?" Adolin has had ENOUGH.

"Storm off, Princeling! I. Do. Not. Dance. Ever."

"It's your wedding, Kaladin! You must!" chimed in another voice.

All four looked to those that have just arrived. Leyten stood in the doorway with Rlain looming behind him in his warform.

"And do it quick" he added. "We are getting hungry and we want our cook back."

The Parshendi, silent until then, joined the discussion.

"If you don't I'll ask Lopen and his cousins to teach you instead."

Kaladin visibly paled and looked closely at the Parshendi, trying to determine whether or not he was serious. He seemed to be. Kaladin looked at all of the others and saw similair determination in their faces. Finally, he gave up and groaned.

"Fine! Have it your way! Just stop pestering me!" And under his breath he added "Yeah, gang up on me, why not. Some loyalty you show. I guess I'm lucky Syl decided to go off somewhere or else she would be against me as well."

Adolin actually let out a whoop of joy. Phase one, Force the Bridgeboy to Learn How to Dance: complete. Now for the real challenge - actually doing it.

That's it for now. Later I'll add two more parts: one about Tarah and one about the wedding itself.

Few explanations:

-Hoid plays a flute and Sigzil is his non-Vorin student so I decided he could play as well. And Rock sings.

-I don't know if there really is such a tradition in Vorin culture but I thought it would be fun.

-As for Syl... There is a reason she's not accompanying Kal right now (and it's not because I felt pity for him... definitely not  )

Not my best work, but here is the following...

"Ouach" Adolin yelled "Bridgeboy, that was my foot".

Kaladin stormed of exasperated.

Adolin raised his hands in frustrations. He has been trying for what? 3 hours to teach this useless pathetic Bridgeboy how not to turn himself into a complete fool at his own wedding. He sure hope the girls were having more success with Tarah because these two together were a recipe for disaster.

"I told you, I do not dance." simply said Kaladin. "Besides, your foot got under mine."

"My foot was exactly where is was supposed to be. I was following the rhythm, one two three four, see? It's easy! How can you not grasp the concept?" shouted back Adolin.

"You missed four and your foot got in the wrong place" responded Kaladin.

"I did not, I am the teacher here".

"You did."

"No I did not."

"Yes. You. Did."

"No it is you clumsy Bridgeboy that missed the step I have been trying to teach you for HOURS" yelled back Adolin getting more and more angered.

"Actually," started another voice from behind, "You did miss four."

Everyone turn to great the new comer. Renarin.

"I did not miss four!" responded shamefully Adolin.

"You did." Renarin turned to face Kaladin "You should not let him teach you. By Alethi standards, he is a lousy dancer."

"WHAT?"

Renarin, still looking at Kaladin and ignoring Adolin, kept on enumerating the facts...

"Did you know he tumbled over his first date ever? They both fall on their back in the middle of the dance floor. He claimed he got entangled in imaginary lines on the carpet. Another time, he did step on his partner foot so often, she storm off in the middle of the dance leaving him without a partner in the middle of the room. Oh and let's not forget the time he just trip a servant who was passing by with his wine platter. It ended up splashing his date from head to toe with violet wine. She was wearing white. And there is also the time where...."

"Oh enough you. That was a long time ago. I was young."

"The wine incident was last summer. Naina would not talk to you afterwards. That is when you started courting Oliniva."

Sigzil and Rock are silently laughing. Kaladin tries really hard not to laugh. Adolin feels the red coming on to his ears in shame.

On the Matter of Wedding Dances part 2

The wedding ceremony was beautiful. Everything went perfectly, both Kaladin and Tarah seemed to shine with happiness as they were saying their vows. Their outfits looked great and somehow matched brilliantly. Now was the time for the first dance that was supposed to be led by the newlyweds.

Kaladin was actually pretty good after the training he underwent with Adolin. He didn't mess up the steps and proved to be able to move with grace if he wanted to.  He didn't even wince when his new wife kept stepping on his toes.

Now Tarah... The woman was a disaster. She tumbled over her feet and couldn't get even one part correctly, tripping and awkwardly moving against the rhythm. It was very bad... And now she managed to trip over her own foot during a simple rotation, falling onto the table and ripping her beautiful dress...

Shallan awoke with a scream. What a nightmare, she thought. She looked around her chamber and found herself alone. After checking the sun she realised she still had few hours until the evening feast. Lately, she tended to feel very tired ever so often so she took to having a nap every afternoon. Still she didn't want to get up but her dream enveloped her in dread.

"Mmmm... You worry..." murmured Pattern. "Why worry?"

"The wedding is at the end of the week. So soon... We have a problem" Shallan claimed, quickly getting up and preparing herself to leave the room.

"Where are you going?" asked the spren.

"I must do something to prevent the disaster!" shouted Shallan, hurrying down the corridor.

This is bad, this is bad, this is bad... she thought frantically. The time was tunning out. Why I didn't realize it earlier? she berated herself. It was as obvious as anything that Tarah, of all people, wouldn't know how to dance. She had the heart of a whitespine but the grace of a chull. With her obvious dislike of all the feminime arts she would never have learned something like dancing. The poor girl is going to make a fool of herself on her wedding day! I must do something. I must... She stopped before the doors to the library. she will need help.

As soon as she entered, both women in the room looked at her.

"Shallan?" asked Jasnah with a surprise in her voice. "I thought you would be still resting."

"Resting? Are you unwell, child?" immediately chimed in Navani with concern in her voice.

"No, I am fine, I was just tired" Shallan assured her. "But Tarah needs our help..."

"Did something happen?" Jasnah furrowed her brow.

"Not yet! But if we don't do something her wedding will be ruined!"

"And why is that?" asked Navani.

"She's... She's just herself! You know her! She will trip all over herself and do something stupid! We must help her when we still can!" Shallan was getting more panicked by the seconds.

"What are you talking about?" demanded Jasnah.

"The dancing! We must teach her how to dance or else it will be all ruined!"

Navani exchanged looks with her daughter and gracefully stood up, taking Shallan by her arm.

"Of course, dear. We will go and help her."

As the three women were nearing the doors to Tarah's room, Shallan was beginning to act even more frantically. What if it's too late? What if we don't manage to teach her on time? If she's so hopeless that nothing can help? It will be a disaster, oh, it will be a disaster! Navani eyed her with concern. Suddenly Pattern started to buzz with annoyment.

"Pattern?" asked Ivory, wondering why his friend acts like this.

"She's there" the Cryptic exclaimed with displeasure.

For a while Ivory focused on the nearing door and nodded.

"Yes, she is" he admitted.

"Who's there? Tarah?" asked Jasnah, looking at her spren.

"The charming one" he answered, somehow timidly.

Jasnah furrowed her brow but she had no time to ponder over the spren's behaviour as Shallan already managed to throw the door open.

"Tarah! We must help you!"

Tarah stood in the middle of ther room, confused, Syl fluttering around her head.

"Help me? With what?" she asked.

Before Shallan managed to answer, Syl wrinkled her nose and snorted.

"Who invited the Cryptic here? We were having so much fun! Tarah was showing me how to dance!"

"Dance?" Navani raised her brow.

"You dance?" asked Jasnah, not showing her surprise.

Tarah blushed and avoided her eyes.

"Well, yeah, I kinda do. I always liked to."

To prove her point she made a few piruettes. Storms, she's graceful like a windspren, noted Jasnah. She definitely didn't expect that.

"Yes! And she was showing me how to! And I will teach Ivory, Glys and others too!" chimed Syl happily.

Jasnah looked to her spren who seemed to be uncomfortable and tried to avoid looking at the honorspren. For a second she thought he actually blushed. Interesting... I wonder if the spren can feel the romantic emotions too...

Meanwhile Shallan let out a VERY loud sigh of relief.

"Oh, Tarah, it's great! I was so worried you would make a fool of yourself on your wedding!"

"Why would I?" asked Tarah, surprised.

"The dancing..."

"Oh, please! I'm a soldier not a lady but I do know how to dance."

"But you never... I mean you acted like you didn't care, you know... I had that dream so I was afraid something will go wrong and..." Shallan tumbled over words, slowly calming down.

Jasnah rolled her eyes.

"We are sorry for interrupting you. We will be on our way" she said, helping her mother haul Shallan outside, leaving befuddled Tarah alone with Syl.

"But don't you dare tell anyone!" shouted Tarah after them as soon as she recovered from her shock.

"Now," Navani claimed, gently tugging Shallan back towards her rooms. "I believe there's something we must talk about..."

Jasnah winced. She knew what Navani wanted to talk about and she didn't need to be there. She already suspected it anyway...

"Come, Ivory. We are going back to the library" she commanded. "I promise I won't pester you with questions about your behaviour towards Sylphrena." At least not too much...

Ok, the second part is done. It's not propably so funny, but I like it anyway

Now we know where was Syl while Adolin and the bridgemen tortured Kal...  As for Ivory's crush on Syl... It's just a cute headcanon of mine

I wonder who will catch my subtle hint... It's nothing evil but...

Patter and Syl dislike each other because of the whole Cryptics vs honorspren thing.

I hope I got Jasnah right, but I'm not too sure... And before you say something, I had Shallan act this way for a reason
