“I’m so glad your grandfather was able to get you and him away from it. My family, too- we wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t evacuated us.”

“He was… yeah. I’m very grateful.”

She sighed, putting an arm around him. Sad. "I miss him. Them. Everyone. I didn't even know Maj that well, but I miss him."

"Do you want to take a break from... all this?" He moved his hand in a circular motion near the screen. "Go visit him?"

Emma nodded. "Yeah. Sure. That'd be nice."

Meron turned to his sister. "Listen to Mrs. Ospiite while I'm gone, okay?"

Lily nodded. "I'm gonna keep watching. But yeah, I will."

He smiled sadly at Emma, keeping an arm wrapped around her back as they left the house.

She kept her arm around him as well, walking slowly with him.

"This is all just... insane. Even just the announcement of the Games interrupted so much here."

Emma nodded in agreement. "It's thrown everything out of wack."

"I guess the thing that annoys me the most is that Mare and Tinker were in the middle of wedding planning. They've been looking forward to this for years... I get it that they paused out of respect for the tributes and their families, but still... Even after we leave the Dystopia and their oppression behind, they're still messing up our lives."

"Always. Forever. It's like a looming beast one can never escape."

"Sometimes I wonder if seceding was even enough. I know we don't have the military power to overthrow them or absorb their people, but... I wish we could. I wish we could kill the beast."

"A dictatorship rarely falls from the inside, but there is always feeble resistance. It gets wiped out, but there will always be some kind of underground."

He looked back at the town of Moongaze as they walked toward its cemetery.

"What you thinking?" Emma said, looking up at him.

"I- I almost want to go back. Find that underground. Get them the resources to rebel, establish contact with us.. maybe even evacuate refugees. During the games might be a good time, since the government is distracted with it, but I don't know about the Peacekeepers. They're probably super strict during the games. And I've got to be here for my sister during her wedding, there's just-"

He rubbed a hand through his hair. "I want to help, but there isn't a good time."

"I know," he sighed again. "It's just something I've been thinking about for a while. I still need to think about it. But as a kid who suffered under the Dystopia, I can't just sit here and do nothing while more people suffer."

"But it feels like... like what is there to be done?"

"I... sorry, Meron. But it's just the truth. The only way these things fall is an outside force or secession of a leader."

“I know. I just… I can’t do nothing, but I don’t want to die, you know?”

"You won't die. Just live. Be happy. Don't let them control you. Small victories. Just... don't go to the underground. I can't have you dying. Not you too."
