She nodded and started moving away.

August caught up to her, and lead her through a back door by in the corner. He seemed pretty familiar with the building, and Marnie didn't spare them so much as a glance. He checked down the narrow hall, lit by a solitary lantern.

"Alright, It looks empty."

He opened another door on the left end of the hall, and went inside. It looked like a mix between a small break room and a storage closet, with one table and a few benches in the middle, and packed crates of supplies lining the walls.

"Marnie won't mind if we talk in here," August said as he sat on one of the benches, "What's up?"

She sat on the bench opposite him and met his eyes. "Well... I was talking with September, and..." she started repeating what he had told her.

After finishing, she paused a moment. "Is any of that true?"

He nodded along as she spoke.

"Yes."

"All of it, or just some of it?"

"Well, he likely learned it from Jan who has a tendency to embellish things for drama's sake, but it's mostly a neat summary of what happened."

He leaned forward on his elbows, looking at her expectantly.

She processed for a moment. “Okay… why did you do it?”

August tilted his head, he hadn't expected this to be her first question.

"Well, there are a lot of reasons--I was both very young and very angry, which did not help. But mostly  I was desperate. There wasn't much else too do, or at least it seemed that way at the time."

August shrugged, "He told you I was exiled didn't he? My home was being destroyed and invaded by the empire and I couldn't be there to stop it."

She stood up and hugged him.

He seemed very surprised by this, but accepted it.

"Yeah . . ." He replied. "Maybe I feel the same way after a few more decades."

"Well . . . I didn't, not really, you had to hear it from someone else."

“Well, yeah, but you were honest about it and didn’t try to lie about it. That counts for something, right?”

"I suppose," He replied. "I wouldn't have blamed you for being mad."

She smirked. “Do you really think I’d be upset that you were angry you were forced to leave your home?”

August stared at her.

"I thought you'd be upset about the fact that I've killed many, many people, yes."

"But?" He gave her a half smile, "But what?"

She leaned on his shoulder. “Well… if you hadn’t been in the palace, I’d probably be insane or dead right now, so I’m not upset with the aftermath.”

August smiled all the way, "I suppose that's true! Some good things have come of it."
