I just always assumed it was chowder.  From New Jersey.

Is that a NJ thing?    If so, I hadn't heard...  I always thought it was a New England thing.

They do have it in New Jersey as well! I have seen it quite often on the menu, together with the crab cakes. The most well known version of the clam chowder has to be the New England one, the white creamy kind with potatoes in it, but there is also a red version made with tomatoes.

For myself, when I think clam chowder, I think of Boston. They serve it in a bowl of bread at the Quincy Market

I know my husband has a place here in NJ where he loves the chowder, but it's not talked about as a big deal around here.  Maybe we just live in the wrong area of NJ?  It's more about Philly foods in our zone.

I've got to set the record straight about crab cakes, though: MARYLAND is the place for those, and the surrounding states that are close enough to know better. ;)   I'm from Maryland originally, if you couldn't tell from that response!  :D

I've been to Wildwood several times  So far, my knowledge of NJ is the New Jersey Garden State Parkway, the Wildwood's boardwalk and the beach   It happens to be the best beach with acceptable waves and decent water temperature at a reasonable driving distance from Montreal: quite hard to find  Old Orchard is just storming freezing! Maryland is just 2h too far  I was there in June this year. The hotel girl claimed the water was cold, but obviously she has never been in really cold water before  It was great. Caught a few days of nice waves

I must say the crab cakes I eat in NJ were not that great  I do not think NJ is known for any culinary feats

Yeah, NJ is basically made up of two parts that wish they didn't have to be connected - North Jersey and South Jersey.  The North tends to associate with New York City whereas the South tends to associate with Philadelphia.  This is why I'll mention cheesesteaks now, because local people around our area (South Jersey) are very particular about those. ^_^   I, on the other hand, will not eat a crab cake made in NJ because I'm a Maryland girl. ;)  By the way, you weren't terribly far north of where my in-laws used to live!  They lived in Ocean City.  Edit to add:  I also find it funny that we also pick on southern folks (Virginia and below) for their comments about the cold here.  Just goes to show it's just a matter of comparison!
