"I don't know. There were good things and bad things there. But things will have changed, too."

"Tell me about it. What was your life like, before all this?"

Oh gosh now I need to come up with backstory

"Well, I had a family. My moms and my older brother. We were happy enough, I guess. I was adopted, so the magic was a pretty big surprise. It's pretty uncommon down south." They sighed. "It wasn't a problem until I got older. We talked to a specialist, and were told that it was an incurable disease. And when I started falling apart, and I knew I was going to die, I ran away. I couldn't handle it. The way they looked at me..."

They stopped, looking down and dropping his hand. Their expression mixed sadness and shame.

Mike reached for her hand again. "I'm sorry you've had to go through that, Erin. I wish you hadn't had t-"

"What do you want to eat?" a gravely voice interrupted. Mike looked up and saw the bartender there. "Oh sorry, uhm...I'll just get some soup." He looks to Erin. "What do you want?"

Their voice was quiet. "Uh. Yeah. The same."

Pxe decideds he likes the Maroonks a lot more then their leader and follows them.

One of them pulls out a lyre out of his robes and starts plucking a tune on it. A few of the Maroonks join in, singing along.

"Anyways, like I was saying, I'm really sorry you had to go through that Erin. I wish I could do something with my healing powers to make all the pain go away."

Pxe found the song somewhat odd, but joined in. The words were surprisingly easy to follow along with.

From mountains high to rivers low

From holy temple we must go

As teaches us the holy tree

Behold it's ancient prophecy

A mortal man will not suffice

We need a god to sacrifice

By name of Eddie she will be

To freedom find, this is our key...

"I wouldn't deserve that. I can't imagine what they thought when I disappeared. I probably really hurt them. But I was so scared, and I hated the way people looked at me like I was already dead, or like they could catch it."

Mike nods. "Would you ever want to go back?"

"...Maybe. To say sorry, I guess. And to remember."

The bartender brings over two bowls of soup and sets them on the table before walking away. Mike immediately starts eating.

"Remember?"

"Remember?"

Erin did not yet eat, seeming lost in thought. "Yeah... You'd think I could never forget that life, not so fast, but it already feels like it's fading. Sometimes I can hardly remember their faces."

The Maroonks clapped once the song was over, a few of them whooping.

"Let's go find The Eddie!" One of them shouted.

"Really? I can never seem to forget my family. Not that it would help with anything..." Mike unconsciously shakes his head slightly. "So...what are you going to do now?

Pxe smiled. He was in the right place.

After a little while, they finally approached the first buildings in the town. The Maroonks decided to split up in groups of two or three to cover more ground. Pxe went with a few and entered through the doors of what appeared to be a restaurant.

"Of course."

He looks over as a few people in strange deep red robes walk into the restaurant then looks back to Erin.

"If that's what you want, I'll go with you. I don't have anything holding me here."

Mike looked back over his shoulder at them again. They stood in the entryway, their eyes scanning over everybody in the room.

"What do you think they want?"

"It's probably nothing to do with us," Erin replied softly, though they seemed unsure.

"Yeah...they look weird though...Anyways, did you get enough to eat?"
